Russia: Putin honours Russian gold medalist Olympians at the Kremlin
Russian President Vladimir Putin hosted a special reception at the Alexandar Hall in the Grand Kremlin Palace in Moscow, Thursday, to honour Russia's gold medal-winning Olympians. Putin described them as real fighters who coped with all the difficulties, competed as a united team and proved that victory comes not just through numbers.
SOT, Vladimir Putin, Russian President (Russian): We know how difficult it has been for our athletes in Rio, on the eve of the competition the team was decreased by almost a third. It was deprived of the opportunity to show themselves in sports where Russia has traditionally been recognised as one of the favourites, but our team, you, my dear friends, have coped with all the difficulties, competed as a united team and proved that victory comes not just through numbers, though in this case the number was important, but by perhaps something more important - skill. As real fighters you have not drifted or broken, but fought and won.
SOT, Vladimir Putin, Russian President (Russian): The decision on the ban of our Paralympians is not right, not moral and not humane. It is just cynical to take it out on those for whom sport has become the meaning in life, those who give by their example, hope and faith to a million people with disabilities. I even feel sorry for those who make such decisions, because they may not understand that it is humiliating for themselves.
SOT, Vladimir Putin, Russian President (Russian): I want to say to our Paralympians that of course we will support you and organise a special event where you will be able to show all your skills. And the prize for the winners will be the same as it would have been on the outcome of the Paralympic Games.

Sochi Olympic medals contain parts of Meteorite!!! | Sochi 2014
THE Sports News Channel on YouTube:
Medals containing parts of a meteorite have gone on display at the Olympic Park in Sochi, Russia.
The fragments came from one of the largest meteorite strikes in more than a century.
Containing as they do, fragments of a recent meteorite strike.
The space debris blazing through the sky over the Southern Urals and bursting over the city of Chelyabinsk in February 2013.
It was the largest recorded such strike in more than a century.
Natalia Gritsai from the regional Department of Culture explains:
One year ago there was a meteorite attack above our city and the meteorite fell down into the lake, so because nobody suffered or died we are using this meteorite in peaceful purposes and we came up with the idea to make special Olympic medals and to give it to the best athletes in the world who will take gold medals on February 15th 2014, which is the first anniversary of that scary day.
The medals are made of brass and nickel and are coated with silver and gold.
A small unique piece from the meteorite attached to the centre of the medal.
I do hope that they (the gold medal winners) will be really happy because our meteorite is not an everyday event and getting the Olympic medal is also not an ordinary thing so we want to give them some space energy, maybe some inspiration for future medals and victories.
Officials are still negotiating with the International Olympic Committee on how to distribute the medals to the athletes.

Russia: 'We are sorry for failing to protect you from this' Putin tells Olympic athletes
Russian President Vladimir Putin apologised to Russian Olympic athletes for failing to protect them from the ongoing doping scandal, speaking in Novogorsk, Wednesday.
In his speech, Putin stressed that Russia has always backed the idea of clean sport in all respects starting from sport that is clean from doping, clean from alien phenomena which are not inherent in sport.
The Russian president expressed his hope that international sporting organisations will do their utmost to prevent themselves from turning into departments of the state institutions of some countries regardless of how powerful and important these countries may seem at first glance.
Summing up the address, Putin recommended that athletes remember those who were barred from the upcoming Winter Olympics. There is an old song since the Soviet times saying: 'for myself and for that guy' – bear this always in mind and you will succeed.

RUSSIA: STALIN'S FORMER HOLIDAY HOME TURNED INTO TOURIST ATTRACTION
Russian/Nat
One of the Soviet Union's most feared leaders - Stalin - has been turned into a tourist attraction in modern day Russia.
The former Communist dictator's holiday home on the Black Sea has been opened up as a hotel and museum.
Despite Stalin's reputation as a mass murderer his dacha is very popular with Russian holidaymakers and fully booked.
High above Sochi's Black Sea coast, hidden among the trees Stalin's former holiday home has been carefully renovated for its first season as a tourist attraction.
It may be an odd holiday location but is proving very popular with the Russians.
Visitors can take tea in the sitting room with a wax image of the man who sent millions to their death in labour camps.
Or they can reminisce over black and white photos or even have their picture taken next to one of history's most infamous tyrants.
Many who've slept in the hotel claimed to have heard Stalin's footsteps - it's all part of the experience.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
I have the sensation a link with the past. The past and the present meet here. It's as if he's standing next to us and looking at us. I think he's a great person and his great spirit continues to live here. I've asked the guard if his ghost is here.
SUPERCAPTION: Tamara, holidaymaker
The dacha has been divided up into 11 apartments including one containing the Man of Steel's' private sitting room and bedroom.
In these rooms he entertained the Chinese leader Mao Zedong, who presented him with the stationary set which still stands on Stalin's desk.
The hotel also contains a restaurant where diners can sample Stalin's favourite Georgian dishes.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
You feel that a great person lived in this place - when you're one of the masses you're a nobody but here you feel that you're a special and great person.
SUPERCAPTION: diner
Visitors can also play billiards at the same table used by Stalin and his cronies.
Until 1991 the dacha belonged to the state and was then handed over to the local co- operative who privatised it.
The most expensive room costs more than 200 U-S dollars a night although Stalin's modest bedroom is only about 150 dollars.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
Now we have a lot of people who want to come and holiday here because they want to vacation where our former leaders used to come and they're mainly interested in its authenticity. For example Stalin's study, his bedroom and where he ate and where he took the cure, where he walked - all of this we've preserved. This year we are practically full up with bookings - 100 per cent.
SUPERCAPTION : Vladimir Shishkin, Director Stalin's Dacha
The dacha is in great demand with Russian pop stars and even politicians - General Pavel Grachev, the former defence minister has vacationed here.

(HD) - CLOSING CEREMONY - PARALYMPIC GAMES - PART 3 - LONDON 2012 - LIVE 09/09/2012
I Will Never Forget This Paralympic Games - London 2012....My respect and admiration to all Athletes who participating in this Olympic Games :) Super Heros :)
London's 2012 Paralympics has ended with a fiery finale and official handover to 2016 host, Rio de Janeiro.
The show, described as a festival of flame honouring Britain's ancient traditions and festivals, brought 11 days of sport to a close.
UK band Coldplay led the show, which started at 20:30 BST, with a live set reflecting the four seasons.
The event ended what organisers say has been the greatest Paralympic Games ever.
Unlike the other Games ceremonies, the 4,200 athletes were seated around the main arena, putting them at the heart of the action.
Declaring the 2012 Paralympics closed, International Paralympic Committee president, Sir Philip Craven, said: These Games have changed us all forever.
China finished top of the Paralympic medals table, with 231 medals - 95 gold. Great Britain cemented third place behind Russia, with a tally of 120, including 34 golds.
As the ceremony drew to a close, Paralympians Ellie Simmonds and Jonnie Peacock helped to put out the Paralympic flame, which was shared out across the stadium symbolising the eternal nature of the flame living among us all.
Each participating country will take home one of the 200 copper petals that made up the Paralympic cauldron.
'A few surprises'
As Sunday's show began, a tribute was paid to the armed forces and military charity, Help for Heroes.
GB Paralympians David Weir and Sarah Storey, who both won four gold medals at the Games, carried the British flag into the stadium, as flagbearers representing 164 nations participating in the Paralympics entered the arena.
And Captain Luke Sinnott, who lost both legs in an IED bomb blast while serving in Afghanistan, climbed the flagpole to raise the Union Jack.
Coldplay sang songs from their five albums, while dancers including the Candoco Dance Company - a contemporary group of 12 disabled and non-disabled dancers - performed with flames around the burning face of a sun king.
Apart from Coldplay's live set, the sold-out finale featured performances from pop star Rihanna, rapper Jay-Z and a cast of around 1,200 performers on three circular stages - Summer, Winter and the Sundial.
The idea is the coming together as one, said artistic director Kim Gavin behind the Festival of Flame.
We are known as a nation for having the most festivals, it is something that we do - with 600 festivals a year.
We pay tribute to all the human spirit and achievement through this wonderful sport of the last two weeks.
Kenya's Mary Nakhumicha ZakayoIrish and Irish runner Michael McKillop were presented with gold medals in recognition of them winning the Whang Youn Dai Achievement Award - for athletes who exemplify the best spirit of the Paralympic Games.
Flowers were also presented to honour the 70,000 Games Maker Olympic and Paralympic volunteers.
Some 120 child volunteers from east London took part in the spectacle, along with disabled aerial performers from Circus Space and The British Paraorchestra.
After the Paralympic flag was passed to the Mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes, performers from Rio - which will stage the games in 2016 - put on a colourful performance fusing hip-hop freestyle and samba, performed by disabled and non-disabled dancers.
Speaking to the 80,000-strong crowd, organising committee chairman Lord Coe said the UK would never think of sport the same way and we will never think of disability the same way.
The Paralympians have lifted the cloud of limitation.
He added: Finally, there are some famous words you can find stamped on the bottom of a product. Words, that when you read them, you know mean high quality, mean skill, mean creativity
'Superhuman' achievements
We have stamped those words on the Olympic and Paralympic games of London 2012.
London 2012. Made in Britain.
IPC president Sir Philip Craven said the Games had been unique and without doubt, in my mind and those of the athletes - the greatest Paralympic Games ever.
Speaking before the start of the ceremony, Prime Minister David Cameron said: I think it's been an absolute triumph from start to finish and I'm really proud of the country, not just that we've put on a great show, but we've had these great audiences.
Mr Cameron, whose disabled son Ivan died in 2009, added: I think back to Ivan. As every parent, you think about all the things they can't do, but at the Paralympics they are superhuman, you see all the things they can do.
He also said it would give momentum to sports participation and the Paralympics had changed perceptions of disabled sport
Hazing Russian soldiers - Fowm Moscow to Murmansk
In Russia, the duty of service still exists and the hazing of newcomers is a national drama that claims many victims every year. In Murmansk, Jelle Brandt Corstius visits the Soldiers Mothers Committee where concerned mothers are trying to save their sons. Jelle drinks with war veterans to the fallen comrades, and speaks to a mother whose son committed suicide after cruel hazing practices during his service.
Original title: Soldiers as sacrificial offering
In the first series: From Moscow to Magadan, Jelle Brandt Corstius traveled from West to East, focusing on the endless Russian countryside and the villages. In this second series: From Moscow to Murmansk, he travels from North to South along the largest river of Russia: the Volga River. A trip along the relatively unknown cities like Murmansk, Volgograd, Dzerzhinsk, Nizhny Novgorod, but also to Moscow and Saint Petersburg. Through topics like women in Russia, new censorship, the environmental problem from Russian perspective and the ideological vacuum, a relatively unknown side of Russia is once again exposed.
Presented by: Jelle Brandt Corstius
