Visit The Museum of York County
There is always something happening at the Museum of York County in Rock Hill, South Carolina (MYCO). Talk of the Town Carolinas visited the Museum of York County on Saturday January 20, 2018 to give you a glimpse of the type of activities and exhibits you will find at MYCO. On this particular day, the museum was hosting their annual Come Draw With US event which featured artists from the Catawba River Art Guild and Winthrop University art students. The event allowed museum visitors, kids and adults, to draw with the professionals side by side in the museum's galleries. Also featured on Saturday was a raven who paints and picks up recycled items which was hosted by the Carolina Raptor Center and their trained professionals. In this video, see interviews with Cate Crane- site manager, Cynthia Spratley Family/Education Program Manager, and Dr. Bradley Sabelli president of the Catawba River art Guild.

Black Slave Owner and Breeder in South Carolina ~ The Interesting Story of William Ellison
....William Ellison was one of the wealthiest men in the South as well as being a black, former slave. He owned cotton gins, plantations, and 68 slaves. And from accounts of the time, he wasn't very nice...At the peak of slavery in the United States, large numbers of free Negroes owned black slaves; in fact, in numbers disproportionate to their representation in society at large. In 1860 only a small minority of whites owned slaves. According to the U.S. census report for that last year before the Civil War, there were nearly 27 million whites in the country. Some 8 million of them lived in the slaveholding states. The census also determined that there were fewer than 385,000 individuals who owned slaves. Even if all slaveholders had been white, that would amount to only 1.4 percent of whites in the country (or 4.8 % of southern whites owning one or more slaves, however, around 30% for free blacks owned slaves).
In the rare instances when the ownership of slaves by free Negroes is acknowledged in the history books, justification centers on the claim that black slave masters were simply individuals who purchased the freedom of a spouse or child from a white slaveholder and had been unable to legally manumit them. Although this did indeed happen at times, it is a misrepresentation of the majority of instances, one which is debunked by records of the period on blacks who owned slaves. These include individuals such as Justus Angel and Mistress L. Horry, of Colleton District, South Carolina, who each owned 84 slaves in 1830. In fact, in 1830 a fourth of the free Negro slave masters in South Carolina owned 10 or more slaves; eight owning 30 or more.

Learn More About The Catawba Studios
A major movie studio is in the planning stage in York County. We learned more about the Catawba Studios project at the Loom Media and the Mill event in July.
This video is the 3rd video in a 3 part series from the Loom Media and the Mill event July 2016.
The new studio is planned to be constructed in the Catawba Indian Nation in Rock Hill. Patti Mercer interviewed Bert Hesse, CEO of Studio South, to find out more.
Catawba Studios will revitalize and expand the Catawba Indian Nation brand worldwide while providing jobs, education and training in the film and entertainment industry to not only the tribal members, but residents of the surrounding communities.
Patti also interviewed partners of the Phete Foundation who will help with jobs, education, and more once the studios are constructed late 2016.

Schiele Museum Explored! Gastonia, North Carolina #Evolution
Take an adventure with me to the Schiele Museum in Gastonia, NC.
Times are changing, and with them, so must we to adapt and preserve the beauty of our world as much as we can.
Nearly 50 years ago, it was acceptable to hunt much of these animals. The polar bear is a prime example where we at one time thought our hunting practices also kept balance. While perhaps true at the time, new forces causing food shortages have put this amazing animal on the brink of extinction.
While this isn't a video about not hunting or game management, I hope it enlightens that we as humans have some form of control and responsibility to ask the hard question: is it necessary?
Can we make a difference if we just stop and think about our actions. Our impacts on the environment have a direct impact on us. It's all connected.
