Hohenschwangau Castle (Upper Swan County Palace) is a 19th-century palace in southern Germany. It was the childhood residence of King Ludwig II of Bavaria and was built by his father, King Maximilian II of Bavaria.
It is located in the German village of Hohenschwangau near the town of Füssen, part of the county of Ostallgäu in southwestern Bavaria, Germany, very close to the border with Austria.
It is a very short walk (5-10mins) to this castle from the town, there are a few steps to get to it, or you can also take a horse drawn cart up the small hill if you wish. Inside the castle is even MORE BEAUTIFUL!! Inspired by Ottoman culture it is very interesting decorated, ceilings are amazing as are all the artworks & figurines!
The tours start every 5 minutes or so and are usually via an audio tour which comes in a variety of languages with a tour guide who takes you from room to room and can answer questions, or you can have a guided tour, which tended to be in English or German.
Tickets can be purchased in the town, there is a large ticket office, or in your hotel etc.
The tour is about 30 minutes long and takes in two levels with servant quarters, billiard room, dining room, bedrooms etc. The furnishings in the castle still look in very good shape, the paintings in the walls equally so, possibly as the castle has been a historical museum since 1913 and well preserved.

Filmed in August 2002, Herrenchiemsee or the New Palace was one of Mad King Ludwig's three castles.
It was fashioned after Versaillies in France and was built between 1878 and 1885.
Ludwig stayed within the Palace for only a few days in September 1885 and after Ludwig's death by drowning the following year at the age of 40, all construction work was discontinued.

Neuschwanstein Castle (German: Schloss Neuschwanstein, is a 19th-century Romanesque Revival palace on a rugged hill above the village of Hohenschwangau near Füssen in southwest Bavaria, Germany. The palace was commissioned by Ludwig II of Bavaria as a retreat and as an homage to Richard Wagner. Contrary to common belief, Ludwig paid for the palace out of his personal fortune and extensive borrowing, not with Bavarian public funds.
The palace was intended as a personal refuge for the reclusive king, but it was opened to the paying public immediately after his death in 1886. Since then over 60 million people have visited Neuschwanstein Castle. More than 1.3 million people visit annually, with up to 6,000 per day in the summer. The palace has appeared prominently in several movies and was the inspiration for Disneyland's Cinderella Castle and later, similar structures.
Germany Day 5 | Neuschwanstein Castle (Fussen, Germany)
This was our first full day in Fussen which ended up being our favorite city of the trip. The mountains and the castles are a beautiful site to see! Fussen is a small town along the Lech river in the foothills of the alps. The river is bright blue with beautifully colored trees along each side of it.
If you are ever in Bavaria I would highly recommend you visit this little town! If you are looking for a traditional Bavarian meal have dinner at Ludwig's which is in the city center.
