Russia: Simferopol exhibits artifacts seized by FSB from black market
The exhibition 'Russia's FSB against Black Archaeology' opened in the Crimean city of Simferopol on Wednesday, showcasing some 200 archaeological finds seized from the black market.
Items include gold and silver ornaments, coins, glassware and ceramics, all of which were seized by Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) officers from clandestine collectors and black marketers over the past three years.
SOT, Marina Malgina, Head of Department for Scientific Exposition of Central Museum of Tavrida (Russian): This is what black [illegal] archaeologists did, the black diggers [black market collectors]. They just took things. The archaeology of the late 18th century was very strange, when artefacts were taken based on their beauty. But now we live in the 21st century and we know that we will not find anything new. Well, we can find a gold or silver object, some forms of precious metals, but it is unlikely that we will find something out of this world. It will be a repetitive story, items similar to those that have already been found and we are interested in their history.
SOT, Marina Malgina, Head of Department for Scientific Exposition of Central Museum of Tavrida (Russian): In this exhibition for example, we really see that the contribution of the FSB to the struggle against black archaeologists has been quite weighty. It is good and quite a few items will always remain in the Crimean Republic.

Karaite Kenassas in Simferopol
Karaites' Kenasas is an amazingly beautiful and unusually harmonic temple complex. For two centuries it was the center of Crimean Karaites' spiritual and religious life. Today it is one of Yevpatoria's most original architectural sights.
Karaites are the most mysterious and scanty Turkic people, representatives of which traditionally profess Karaism - peculiar branch of Judaism. Cavern town Chufut Kale in Bakhchysarai's outskirts used to be their major center in Crimea for a long time. However, after the peninsula was annexed to Russian Empire in the late 18th century, the majority of Crimean Karaites moved to Yevpatoria. At the same time the necessity of the large temple, where the community's representatives could gather for divine services, arose.
Thus, in 1805 a wonderful light building of the Large, or Cathedral, Kenasa - the prayer house meant for festive services - appeared in Yevpatoria's spiritual center. Ten years later the Small Kenasa for regular divine services was built near it, on the place of old (dated by 16th century) Karaites' Temple. Both buildings were carried out in classical style, 'flavored' with Crimean architecture's coloring.
Three elegant inner courtyards lead to the Kenasas' complex. Slabs with Hebrew writings decorate the first one - the Grape Yard. There is also a marble fountain here that served for hand washing before prayer. Slabs with the names of Kenasas' sponsors and marble slabs with information about the most significant events in Karaite community's life decorate the second - the Marble Yard. The oldest slab dates back in 1790. The Marble Yard is notable for marble stele, installed here in memory of Russian Imperator Alexander the Firsts' visit to Kenasas in 1825.
In the year 1921, when Soviet government assumed the power, the Large and the Small Kenasas were closed. Only twenty years later - during the World War II - the Small temple was reopened, and a charity canteen was adjoined to it. The canteen may be seen even today. In the 60s years, the temple complex's premises were occupied by museum of local lore's expositions, sports groups and even by kindergarten. Only in 1999 Kenasas' buildings were returned to Karaites and restored.
Today Karaites' Kenasas are not just a working temple, but a very interesting tourist sight. Excursions are carried out here on free from divine services days. Today an original cafe, offering Karaites' national cuisine, 'Karaman' and the Museum of Karaites' History and Culture function not far from the temple complex.
Russia: Crimean museum to appeal court verdict on returning gold artefacts to Ukraine
A Crimean museum in Simferopol vowed to appeal after a Dutch court ruled that gold artifacts loaned to Amsterdam's Allard Pierson Museum from the peninsula must be returned to Ukraine, on Wednesday.
SOT, Andrey Malygin, Tavrida Central museum director (Russian): We are going to appeal within three months, we must do that. But, we should understand, that with an appeal it is unlikely they will make another decision.
SOT, Andrey Malygin, Tavrida Central museum director (Russian): It is mostly politically arranged and I doubt that people will sit in the Supreme Court of the Netherlands with another point of view than the District Court of Amsterdam . We don't hold out much hope.
SOT, Andrey Malygin, Tavrida Central museum director (Russian): We are ready to go for it until the end, but the question is, the situation is very complicated, and it affects our exhibits.

Russia: Pistol used to execute Nicholas II exhibited in Moscow museum
A Colt pistol with which the last Tsar of the Russian Empire, Nicholas II, was killed in 1917 was showcased at the State Central Museum of Contemporary History of Russia, in Moscow, on Tuesday.
Nikita Anikin, academic secretary at State Central Museum of Contemporary History of Russia (Russian): We have exhibited a Colt pistol that belonged to Mikhail Medvedev, one of the participants in the assassination of the Tsar family. This is indeed a very tragic episode. However, Medvedev handed over the gun to the Soviet Museum of Revolution and felt no confusion when describing all the details of the assassination in the letter he attached to the pistol.
Vladimir Medinskiy, Russian Minister of Culture (Russian): Today is the 100th anniversary since the day Moscow authorities decided to open the Revolution Museum. I would like to wish that the museum and all of us Moscow authorities would never have a reason for such actions in the future and would never create museums of revolution.

CRIMEA: JEWISH SETTLEMENT DATING BACK TO 1ST CENTURY DISCOVERED
Russian/Nat
A Jewish settlement dating back to the first century has been discovered in the Crimea, providing the first evidence that Jews inhabited this part of the ancient world.
The find was made at Khersones, right in the centre of the Crimean capital Sebastopol.
The settlement was uncovered as archeologists at a nearby site in Balaclava discovered the first Roman temple to be found in the Black Sea region.
The ancient Greek city of Khersones has just yielded its latest astonishing secret providing a new insight into Jewish history and settlement.
Although archeological digs began here in 1827 research was curtailed when the Soviets made Khersones a closed city, forbidding foreign archeologists access to the site.
In 1958 a stone engraved with a menorah - a Jewish candelabra - was discovered but because of anti-semitic sentiment during the Soviet era it wasn't considered noteworthy.
With the collapse of the Soviet Union though American archeologists were free to work on the site with their Ukrainian colleagues.
This summer the teams finally uncovered enough evidence to say that there had been a
Jewish settlement there.
Until now there was only written evidence that a Jewish community may have existed in
the first century.
But amongst the most conclusive evidence has been the discovery of a synagogue - right in the middle of the city.
SOUNDBITE:
It is a synagogue which shows that in this Greek city was a Jewish community. The city was definitely Greek and the Jews spoke Greek but when they went to synagogue of
course they only spoke Hebrew.
SUPER CAPTION: Mikhail Zolotarev, Deputy Director of the Khersones National Trust
The local museum which once boasted solely Greek artifacts is now filling up with items from the Jewish find including frescoes and mosaics from the synagogue.
But this find is not the only discovery which is causing a stir among archeologists in the region.
At Balaclava, on the outskirts of Sebastopol, archeologists have just found a second century Roman temple.
Two altars dedicated to the Gods Hercules and Jupiter have been uncovered, alongside a sacrificial altar and an enormous engraved tablet of stone.
SOUNDBITE:
It's the first kind of Roman temple to be found in the territory of the Soviet Union and in the Black Sea region and its the largest tablet of its kind found in this area.
SUPER CAPTION: Oleg Savelya, archeologist
But further excavation on the temple is under threat because the local authorities have planned to build new apartment blocks on the site.
It'll take a Herculean task by the archeologists to ensure the temple remains intact.

Maxim Tyurin, researcher at Museum Reserve of Tauric Chersonesos (Russian): Several years ago this object of the archaeological heritage attracted attention of burglars who managed to dig more than 15 large pits.
