The Venta Rapids - at 249 metres wide - constitute the widest waterfall in Europe. Furthermore, the old brick bridge which spans the Venta River is the longest of its kind in Europe. Its cobblestone surface and red-bricked structure bestow Kuldīga with a unique entry way into its Old Town.
Whether you come to Kuldīga by car or coach, take a wander around the beautiful parkland around the right bank of the Venta River. There’s a newly constructed board walk taking you along the riverside.
Kuldīga’s Old Town looks like an open-air museum - it’s lined with vibrantly coloured wooden cottages, lavished with traditional window frames, and plenty of historic, painted shop signs. Because of this, Kuldīga is the most picturesque town in Latvia. It’s a treasure trove one must take time to explore at a leisurely pace. Each street has its own little charm.
We had a hearty lunch at Staburadze, located by Liepājas iela 8. It’s our favourite cheap and fulling lunch-time option in Kuldīga. The solanka soup was served with some cooked meat, boiled with tomatoes, onions, sour cream, and olives. It’s really similar to the Russian solanka soup - this must be the Latvian regional variation.
Café Makkabi is a really cosy and quiet café located by Liepājas iela 9. It was a treat to taste their delicious, warm juices. The staff was really pleasant and helpful; furthermore, the prices were really reasonable - both of our drinks cost just €2.30. We really recommend this homely, little café as an alternative to the all too popularised The Marmalade.
For an early dinner, we headed to Stender’s, standing by Baznīcas iela 17. The meal sizes were filling and the prices really down-to-earth. The Warsaw-style pork chop, served with fries and fresh vegetable salad was really yummy. Although it didn’t beat the delicious pork chop we ate in Sigulda - it was worth it. The pork chop was laden with a a sour cream and tomato layer - it was really yummy. Nevertheless, as a Pole, I continue to wonder what makes this dish ‘Warsaw-style’.
The potato pancakes were served with sour cream and more tomatoes. Crispy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside - they were perfect. Furthermore, the lady serving us was really kind. The interior of Stender’s was really cosy; as for an improvement, the place could do without the house music. Nevertheless, the place comes alive at night as a bar.
In total, our dinner at Stender’s cost just around €10.00. It’s the cheapest meal we ate in Latvia.

Suiti cultural space
UNESCO: Urgent Safeguarding List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity - 2009
URL:
Description: The Suiti are a small Catholic community in the Protestant (Lutheran) western part of Latvia. The Suiti cultural space is characterized by a number of distinct features, including vocal drone singing performed by Suiti women, wedding traditions, colourful traditional costumes, the Suiti language, local cuisine, religious traditions, celebrations of the annual cycle, and a remarkable number of folk songs, dances and melodies recorded in this community. Older forms of extended family structures are still common here, and such families, where the transfer of skills from generation to generation takes place, are important bastions of Suiti cultural heritage. The synthesis of pre-Christian traditions and religious rituals has created a unique blend of intangible cultural heritage in the Suiti community. The pillar of Suiti identity the Catholic Church successfully recovered following the Soviet period and as a result, the Suiti cultural space has experienced a gradual renaissance. However, today only a few, mostly old people, have a good knowledge of Suiti cultural heritage, and thus there is an urgent need to disseminate this knowledge and to involve more people in its preservation by recovering elements preserved only in written documents, film archives and museum depositaries.

To catch a glimpse of it a visit to the three castle mounds (Klostermound, Holymound and Castlemound) and the Tervete History Museum is strongly recommended. Indian summer in Sigulda, town in the Vidzeme Region of Latvia, 53 kilometres (33 miles) from the capital city Riga. There are different versions of the origin of the name Sigulda. One of the most plausible variants is the derivative of the German name Segewold from Sieg + Wald, which means victory forest and indicates the victory of the Crusaders and Semigallians in the battle of the Livs in 1206.
Zelta rudens Sigulda.
