Statue of Okubo Toshimichi (Kagoshima City, Japan) - Contributor to Meiji Restoration -
Okubo Toshimichi is the great contributor to the Meiji Restoration and modernization of Japan. He was assassinated in 1878 just 1 year after the death of his friend, Saito. His statue looks as if he is crying in the rain.

Visiting the House of a EDO FEUDAL LORD in Kagoshima, Japan
We travel to Kagoshima and visit the famous Senganen Garden, built by the wealthy Shimazu Clan, one of the most powerful feudal clans during the Edo Period. This is an absolute MUST VISIT! We enjoyed the beautiful Japanese gardens, tasted Kagoshima sweet treats and removed our shoes to stroll inside the feudal lord's home (no biggie!).
And of course we couldn't end the day without some delicious black pork ramen.

Kagoshima Tsurumaru Castle (Reimeikan) in Kagoshima City, Japan (9th February 2015)
TSURUMARU Castle (Kagoshima Castle)
HISTORY
In 1600, Tokugawa Ieyasu defeated opponent lords including Shimazu at the battle of Sekigahara, Gifu Prefecture.
As a result, Ieyasu established Tokugawa military government in Tokyo.
Shimazu immediately built this castle to prepare for the battle with incoming military of Ieyasu.
However, the invasion was cancelled and Shimazu family was allowed to continue to govern Kagoshima during Edo period.
Instead, Ieyasu reduced territory of Shimazu greatly.
This castle had not been used for battle until Meiji Period.
In 1862, Namamugi Incident took place in Kanagawa Prefecture.
At the incident, British ambassador was killed by Samurai of Shimazu.
As a revenge, British navy attacked Kagoshima city (Anglo-Satsuma War) in 1863.

Nagasaki, Japan: The Former Trading Post of Dejima
Dejima was an artificial island constructed in the port of Nagasaki in 1636 to segregate Portuguese residents from the Japanese and control the spread of Christianity.
The Portuguese acted as liaison between Japan and China and their ships would return laden with silk while sugar was the main commodity imported by the Dutch later on. It is thought that this sugar is why Nagasaki's local cuisine became famous for its lavish use of sugar.
Dejima trading post has been recreated and is most interesting.

During the Meiji Restoration, Satsuma burned many people. The most famous of them is Saigo Takamori, who is regarded as one of the three major castles of Meiji Restoration. He is a symbol of Kagoshima so that he can see his characters everywhere in Kagoshima. I visited the museum to see what role he played in the modernization period of Japan. When the Meiji Restoration began and new weapons were introduced, the traditional samurai who had knife-cutting became more and more deserted. Then, in order to turn out the dissatisfaction of the samurai, there was a definite argument that the war with the Joseon dynasty should occur. Saigo, who insisted on a definite theory, withdrew from his office and turned to Kagoshima when his argument was not accepted. The samurai finally revolted around Saigo, but they were suppressed and Saigo became self-confident. As a result, the samurai era was completely closed. The Southwest War was Japan's last civil war, and it was the last war between the Japanese. Satsuma soldiers and government soldiers have killed about 12,000 people. After the Southwest War, Japan succeeded in modernization, but this led to the tragedy of our country. I felt bitter.

Tenmonkan, Kagoshima | Japan Travel Guide
Tenmonkan ( 天文館 )
Description
————————————————————————
The street was named after the Tenmonkan Observatory (also known as Meijikan) which helped develop astronomy and almanacs during the Edo Era. Currently now known as Kagoshima’s premier shopping district, visitors can enjoy shopping and dining. There are plenty of restaurants which serve shochu and the famous Kagoshima delicacy of kurobuta (pork) shabu-shabu. In addition, choosing souvenirs isn’t too difficult here.
