WELCOME to ANCIENT OLYMPIA GREECE - 2018 vlog
Welcome to ancient Olympia Greece! This is where the first Olympic Games were practiced in 776 BC. We tour the site of the ancient games, including the gym, the stadium, and temple of Zeus.
Unlike the modern games, the ancient Olympics were practice by free-born Greek men. The games were practiced here in Olympia rather than a different city each year. It is one of the great contributions the Greeks have passed on to modern times.
We run across the ancient starting line for the Olympic pentathlon. Next, we visit the Olympia Museum to visit the statues that were uncovered in Olympia.

Archaeological Museum of Olympia - Greece HD Travel Channel
After visiting the ancient site, we make a tour of the Archaeological Museum of Olympia. Already build in 1882 to exhibit finds from the surrounding archaeological sites, it was the first museum outside Athens. In 1975 one set up a new building, renovated in 2003 with high-quality materials. It is one of the most important museums in Greece. The exhibition halls are arranged chronologically in a clockwise direction.
We start our tour with the models of the Pelopion, the first sanctuary. Followed up to 4000 years old figures and weapons, usually made of bronze.
Architectural relics, like the pediment of the Treasure House of Megara, or the east and west pediment of the Temple of Zeus, witness the earlier artful design of the buildings.
We see models and an illustration of a reconstruction of the Statue of Zeus that brings the past back to life. Once the statue had hair and robes covered with gold and a skin made of ivory.
The statues of Nike of Paionios and Hermes of Praxiteles witness the perfection of Greek sculpture.
A highlight in the Roman hall is the bull from the Nymphaeum of Herodes Atticus, a consul, and patron of the arts.

Ancient Olympia in Greece, Home of the Original Olympic Games
Olympia is a town and UNESCO World Heritage Site in Peloponnese, Greece. This was the site of the original Olympic Games from 776 BC. The Olympic Games were held every four years throughout Classical Antiquity, from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD. The first Olympic Games were in honor of Zeus. The flame for each modern Olympic Games is still lit in the town, by a reflection of sunlight in a parabolic mirror, and carried by torch to the place where the games are to be held.
The sanctuary, known as the Altis, consists of an unordered arrangement of various buildings. Enclosed within the temenos (sacred enclosure) are the Temple of Hera and Temple of Zeus, the Pelopion and the area of the altar, where the sacrifices were made. The hippodrome and later stadium were also to the east. To the north of the sanctuary can be found the Prytaneion and the Philippeion, as well as the array of treasuries representing the various city states. The Metroon lies to the south of these treasuries, with the Echo Stoa to the East.
Olympia is also known for the gigantic ivory and gold statue of Zeus that used to stand there, sculpted by Pheidias, which was named one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Very close to the Temple of Zeus which housed this statue, the studio of Pheidias was excavated in the 1950s. Evidence found there, such as sculptor's tools, corroborates this opinion. The ancient ruins sit north of the Alfeios River and Mount Kronos. The Kladeos, a tributary of the Alfeios, flows around the area. Its located in the part of Greece which is called Peloponesse. In Ancient Greece, Olympia was sacred ground to the Greeks.

Ancient Olympia Site Tour
December 17, 2018 - We were surprised to find ourselves with an opportunity to visit Olympia Greece, the location of the ancient Olympic games. The site was expansive covering the training areas and buildings, temples to Zeus and Hera, and the stadium where the games were held.
The majority of the buildings and statues were in ruins and columns pieces littered the temple of Zeus. Before visiting the Archaeological Museum of Olympia, we walked the stadium area and saw where the fire for every modern Olympic game since 1936 was started. Artifacts inside the museum included many statues of the Greek gods, helmets, shields, vases, and other items used during the games.
We also learned about the organization and rules behind the games, such as you had to be a Greek in good standing, the participants performed in the nude, only men could participate, and the coveted prize was an olive branch. We enjoyed our visit to the site and will think fondly of it each time the modern Olympics occurs.
