Korea and Russia broaden cultural horizon for each other
Seoul and Moscow established bilateral ties nearly 3 decades ago.
But the two countries' interactions encompassing traditions, art and lifestyle... began long before that.
Lee Unshin updates us on what cultural exchange between Korea and Russia looks like today.
Koreans' drinking culture usually consists of beer and soju, so what would they think of a Russian hard liquor, say Vodka?
This is the kind of topic that online content creator Lee Dong-gun likes to talk about on his channel.
His videos, with subtitles, shed light on the differences in lifestyle and culture between Korea and Russia.
(Korean)
I became friends with some Russian exchange students, and that got me interested in the country. I realized how K-pop was becoming more and more popular, but there wasn't enough information about Korean people out there. So I decided to make videos about Korea that foreigners wouldn't be able to find anywhere else.
Lee says his goal is to narrow the cultural gap between Korea and Russia.
And what drives him to keep going? The gifts and unexpected messages, from those who appreciate his efforts.
(SOV)
His work reflects a modern form of exchanges, long embraced by Seoul and Moscow.
It's been nearly 30 years since South Korea and Russia first established their modern diplomatic relations, but their cultural interactions, go back even further.
(Korean)
Korea's pop culture is getting a lot of attention in Russia these days, but Russian classics are still to this day widely cherished in Korea.
University professor Seog Young-joong spent her lifetime studying Russian literature and philosophy.
As a big fan of Dostoevsky..., she has written plenty of books herself, to help Koreans read between the lines of the Russia's most famous writers.
(Korean)
Character and mentality-wise, Koreans and Russians have a lot in common, such as wanting to appeal to emotions rather than being calculative, or the shared sense of nostalgia towards their mothers.
Koreans have long appreciated Russia's world-renowned classical music, ballet and literature,...and today, other aspects of Russian culture are making their way into the everyday lives of people in Korea.
Seoul residents know where to go when craving some Russian dishes.
Here, customers are in for a big cultural welcome,... as they dine next to Russia's national flowers and treasured handicrafts, and are surrounded by waiters in traditional costumes.
(Korean)
When I first came to Korea, I made a lot of friends at school and soon realized they don't know anything about Russia. So I wanted to be the first one to spread Russian culture here.
Authentic Russian dishes, like stir-fried lamb and potatoes, one of the most popular choices on the menu, help turn one-time visitors into regulars.
(Korean)
Russia is a big country with a wide variety of regional dishes. Among those, through research, I picked some cuisines that would suit the palate of Koreans best.
Seoul and Moscow have come a long way to broaden their horizons.
And looking beyond ideological differences to understand each other's' culture helps create a brighter future for the two countries' relationship.

Journey from Magadan to Europe (English subs)

10 Best Places to Visit in Russia.
Russia, once the largest and most powerful member of the former USSR, nonetheless remains a fascinating country to visit. It is a country of contrasts, from great subtropical beaches to bitterly cold winter regions in the north. The east may have fewer people, but its lovely cities are among the most popular places to visit in Russia and can hold their own against the west. Russia is steeped in history everywhere a traveler goes, from vicious battles to great classical music and literature. And almost everywhere visitors can see examples of magnificent art, not only in museums but also in its churches.

A note on 'Ivan the Terrible' - in Russia, Ivan IV has the epithet 'Гро́зный' meaning 'Great' or 'Formidable'. So why is he known as Ivan 'the Terrible' in English? Because he was evil or useless or because of anti-Russian bias? No, because 'Terrible' in English also means awesome or formidable - this was well understood when 'Гро́зный' was first translated into English centuries ago, but now fewer people understand this. (see definitions 3 & 4 here: The name stuck, and Ivan IV has been known as Ivan the Terrible ever since.

Kim Jong-un arrives in Vladivostok for his summit with President Putin on Thursday
We begin with the latest on the closely-watched Pyeongyang-Moscow summit.
More details are released on the time of the event and the additional news comes as Kim Jong-un is in the Far Eastern Federal University in Vladivostok.
Lee Ji-won has our top story.
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and Russian President Vladimir Putin are set to hold their first summit in Vladivostok at around 1 to 2 p.m. on Thursday.
This is according to Russian reporters, citing the Kremlin.
The news comes after Kim's arrival in the city earlier on Wednesday.
He was greeted by guard of honor and senior Russian officials,... including Alexander Kozlov, the Minister for the Development of the Russian Far East and Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov.
Kim then headed to his hotel at the Far Eastern Federal University, located on Russky Island off the coast of Vladivostok.
The venue is also where the leaders are expected to meet on Thursday.
And contrary to expectations, Kim did not have dinner with the Russian officials.
Just as he did when visiting Vietnam for his 2nd summit with U.S. President Donald Trump, Kim once again used his train to get to the Russian city.
He departed early on Wednesday,... crossing the Russian border at around 10-forty in the morning, local time.
Accompanying Kim were Pyeongyang's top diplomat Ri Yong-ho,and Vice Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui.
He made a quick stop over at Khasan Station, where a short ceremony was held to welcome him, and Kim gave an unexpected interview with a local broadcaster.
I hope this visit will be successful and useful, and that President Putin and I can discuss on the specific issues that need resolution on the Korean Peninsula, as well as the development of our bilateral relations.*
Here, Kim also looked around the museum of Kim Il-sung's House, which was built near the station in 1986 to honor the visit to the Soviet Union of Kim Jong-un's late grandfather and founder of the North Korean regime Kim Il-sung.
After an hour break, Kim boarded the train for another 6 hours to arrive in Vladivostok.
Russian President Putin is slated to arrive on Thursday, ahead of his one-on-one sitdown with Kim. The meeting will be followed by an expanded talk between respective delegations, and there won't be a signing of any agreements or delivery of a joint statement by the two leaders.
The main agenda of the summit was said to be finding diplomatic solutions to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, but many are expecting Kim and Putin to also discuss their bilateral issues, economic ties,... and possibly easing UN sanctions against the North.
While the exact date of Kim's departure is yet to be confirmed,... Kim is expected to stay at least an extra day after his summit with Putin.
During his stay, Kim could have a sitdown with North Korean students at the university or pay a visit to various economic or tourists locations including the world-renowned Mariinsky Theatre or Russia's Pacific Fleet headquarters.

We begin with the upcoming summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and Russian President Vladimir Putin... As the world keeps close tabs on the meeting,... various media outlets are saying the two will have their first face-to-face on Wednesday or Thursday this week in Vladivostok.
Our Oh Jung-hee starts us off... with more details on the much-anticipated summit.
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will be in Russia for three days starting this Wednesday... and may visit the ballet theatre and navy fleet headquarters.
That's according to Japan-based Kyodo News Agency, citing Russian government officials.
The agency reported... that the North's protocol chief Kim Chang-son toured around the world-renowned Mariinsky Theatre, a public aquarium and Russia's Pacific Fleet headquarters -- all of which, therefore, could be visited by Kim Jong-un.
Kyodo added... that Kim will make his way to Vladivostok using a special train on Wednesday and have a dinner banquet with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.
On the next day, Kim and Putin will have their one-on-one meeting as well as an expanded meeting.
On Friday, before returning to Pyeongyang, the agency says Kim could meet with North Korean students and researchers in Russia... or tour around Vladivostok.
North Korea's advance team is busy checking the security in Vladivostok.
Pyeongyang's protocol chief Kim Chang-son, the deputy commander of the guard command Kim Chol-gyu and Vice Foreign Minister Im Chon-il were spotted inspecting Russia's Far Eastern Federal University.
This is where the summit is most likely to happen.
Russia's RIA Novosti agency reports... that a sign had appeared in one of the buildings that Kim Jong-un will be there.

The Ally From The Far East - Japan in World War 1 I THE GREAT WAR Special
See WW1 planes in action and meet Indy & Crew this summer in Essex, UK:
Japan's participation in World War 1 is an often overlooked part of their history - even in Japan itself. Their service as one of the members of the Entente marked the climax of a development that started with the Meiji Restoration, a way out of isolation and into the global alliance system. This brought Japan more power and was also very lucrative. And after fighting in the Pacific Theatre of World War 1, the Siege of Tsingtao and contributing the Japanese Navy to the war effort, Japan had a seat at the table of the Versailles peace negotiations.

SUMMARY
=======
Russia (Russian: Росси́я, tr. Rossiya, IPA: [rɐˈsʲijə]), officially the Russian Federation (Russian: Росси́йская Федера́ция, tr. Rossiyskaya Federatsiya, IPA: [rɐˈsʲijskəjə fʲɪdʲɪˈratsɨjə]), is a country in Eurasia. At 17,125,200 square kilometres (6,612,100 sq mi), Russia is the largest country in the world by area, covering more than one-eighth of the Earth's inhabited land area, and the ninth most populous, with about 144.5 million people as of 2018, excluding Crimea. About 77% of the population live in the western, European part of the country. Russia's capital, Moscow, is the largest metropolitan area in Europe proper and one of the largest cities in the world; other major cities include Saint Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg and Nizhny Novgorod. Extending across the entirety of Northern Asia and much of Eastern Europe, Russia spans eleven time zones and incorporates a wide range of environments and landforms. From northwest to southeast, Russia shares land borders with Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland (both with Kaliningrad Oblast), Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, China, Mongolia and North Korea. It shares maritime borders with Japan by the Sea of Okhotsk and the U.S. state of Alaska across the Bering Strait.
The East Slavs emerged as a recognizable group in Europe between the 3rd and 8th centuries AD. Founded and ruled by a Varangian warrior elite and their descendants, the medieval state of Rus arose in the 9th century. In 988 it adopted Orthodox Christianity from the Byzantine Empire, beginning the synthesis of Byzantine and Slavic cultures that defined Russian culture for the next millennium. Rus' ultimately disintegrated into a number of smaller states; most of the Rus' lands were overrun by the Mongol invasion and became tributaries of the nomadic Golden Horde in the 13th century. The Grand Duchy of Moscow gradually reunified the surrounding Russian principalities, achieved independence from the Golden Horde. By the 18th century, the nation had greatly expanded through conquest, annexation, and exploration to become the Russian Empire, which was the third largest empire in history, stretching from Poland on the west to Alaska on the east.Following the Russian Revolution, the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic became the largest and leading constituent of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, the world's first constitutionally socialist state. The Soviet Union played a decisive role in the Allied victory in World War II, and emerged as a recognized superpower and rival to the United States during the Cold War. The Soviet era saw some of the most significant technological achievements of the 20th century, including the world's first human-made satellite and the launching of the first humans in space. By the end of 1990, the Soviet Union had the world's second largest economy, largest standing military in the world and the largest stockpile of weapons of mass destruction. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, twelve independent republics emerged from the USSR: Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and the Baltic states regained independence: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania; the Russian SFSR reconstituted itself as the Russian Federation and is recognized as the continuing legal personality and a successor of the Soviet Union. It is governed as a federal semi-presidential republic.
Russia's economy ranks as the twelfth largest by nominal GDP and sixth largest by purchasing power parity in 2015. Russia's extensive mineral and energy resources are the largest such reserves in the world, making it one of the leading producers of oil and natural gas globally. The country is one of the five recognized nuclear weapons states and possesses the largest stockpile of weapons of mass destruction. Russia is a great power as well as a regional power and has b ...
