French resistance fighter Jean Nallit's personal story of liberation
May 8 2015 is a time to remember across France as the country reflects on liberation from Nazi oppression seventy years ago.
During World War II the city of Lyon in the south east became the capital of the resistance movement. For two years from 1940 it was in the free zone and became the crossroads of the different resistance groups.
In 1942 terror gripped France's second city as the Gestapo moved in to track down Jews and resistance fighters. The military school in Avenue Berthelot was taken…

Besançon is a city in eastern France, near the border with Switzerland. The old city center lies in a horseshoe bend on the Doubs River. The sprawling Citadel of Besançon perches on a hill and is home to 3 museums, a zoo and 600m-long ramparts. At the foot of the hill, Besançon Cathedral has a unique 70-dial astronomical clock that indicates sunrise and sunset, eclipses, and tides in French ports.
Hugging a bouclé (hairpin curve) of the River Doubs, the cultured and very attractive capital of Franche-Comté remains refreshingly modest and untouristy, despite charms such as a monumental Vauban citadel, a graceful 18th-century old town and France’s first public museum. In Gallo-Roman times, Vesontio (over the centuries, the name evolved to become Besançon) was an important stop on the trade routes linking Italy, the Alps and the Rhine, and some striking remains of this period survive.
Besançon (affectionately known as Besac by its inhabitants) is situated in an oxbow bend of the river Doubs (known as la Boucle). The river encircles the old town, while the imposing citadel, built by military engineer Vauban, blocks the neck of the river bend.
The city has a long history, and has been settled since the Bronze Age (ca. 1,500 BC). In Roman times, Besançon was a flourishing provincial town known as Vesontio. Some Roman remains can still be admired in the city centre. In the late Middle Ages, Besançon was a free city state within the Holy Roman Empire. From the 14th to the 17th century, Besançon and the region of Franche-Comté changed hands various times between Burgundy, Spain and France, and were finally joined with France in 1678. From then on, Besançon became an important strategic town for the French, and large fortifications were built to defend it. Besançon has however not played any major role in French history since then, and its location as a relative backwater has left the city centre largely unspoiled.

Besançon is a city in eastern France, near the border with Switzerland. The old city center lies in a horseshoe bend on the Doubs River, dominated by the hilltop Citadel of Besançon. This sprawling 17th-century fortress is home to museums and a zoo. At the foot of the hill, Besançon Cathedral has a unique 70-dial astronomical clock that indicates sunrise and sunset, tides in French ports and eclipses.
Besancon is the capital of the department of Doubs and of the Franche-Comté region in eastern France, close to the border with Switzerland. Once proclaimed first green city of France, it has been labeled a Town of Art and History since 1986. Since 2008, Besançon's Vauban citadel has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Besançon is located in the north-east quarter of France on the Doubs River. It is about 325 kilometres (202 miles) east of the national capital of Paris, 100 kilometres (62 miles) east of Dijon in Burgundy, 125 km (78 mi) northwest of Lausanne in Switzerland, and 100 km (62 mi) southwest of Belfort in Franche-Comté. It is located at the edge of the Jura Mountains.
Besancon is famous for its microtechnology and watch industries. It is host of the biannual Micronora trade fair, one of Europe's major events in the field of microtechnologies. The city has a little-known specialty, automatic ticketing machines for car parking, airports, date stamping. The watch industry, for which Besançon remains the French capital, endured a major crisis in the 1970s when the advent of quartz watches from Asia knocked out the traditional watch industry in the space of just a few years. The famous Lip affair epitomizes the industrial crisis. LIP is to this day the name of one of Besançon's most prestigious brands of watches. Refusing to let their factory close, the workers set up a cooperative to run it. The action produced a lot of notoriety and sympathy for the workers but also resulted in branding Besançon as a city of the radical left.
UNESCO added the Besancon citadel, the city walls and Fort Griffon to its list of World Heritage Sites in 2008, as part of the Fortifications of Vauban group. Some older military architecture has also survived. There is a cylindrical, 15th-century tower near the Porte Notre-Dame, the southern gate of the city. The Porte Rivotte, a 16th-century gate, has two round towers. The citadel houses the Museum of the French Resistance and Deportation.

France Mourns Nazi Resistance Hero Raymond Aubrac
BY KEVIN DUBOUIS
ANCHOR LAUREN GORES
French Resistance hero Raymond Aubrac died Wednesday in France at the age of 97. He was one of the last surviving senior leaders of the Resistance, which fought against the occupying Germans during World War II. Euronews reports...
He and his wife Lucie, who died five years ago, joined the underground Resistance movement in 1941 after France fell to the Nazis.
The New York Times has more of the Aubrac's backstory, and why they were such heralded figures in French society, beginning with Raymond's capture.
The couple were at the center of one of the most dramatic episodes in wartime France. Mr. Aubrac had been captured in June 1943 with Jean Moulin, a revered Resistance leader, and six other operatives. Tortured by Klaus Barbie, the notorious Gestapo officer known as the Butcher of Lyon, Mr. Aubrac was sentenced to death.
Lucie Aubrac, who was pregnant at the time, lied to Barbie telling him the child wasn't legitimate — and for that reason, she needed to marry Mr. Aubrac. Barbie rebuffed her, but a bribed Nazi officer allowed the marriage ceremony. Mrs. Aubrac used the occasion to tell her husband they would be rescued. (image: Wikimedia Commons)
The BBC reports the couple's exploits became the stuff of legend.
More drama awaited. A few weeks later, Raymond Aubrac was able to escape from the Germans thanks to a daring attack mounted by his wife (Lucie) on the convoy carrying him to jail.
And France 24 has the rest of the story...
The couple then escaped to London where they joined Charles de Gaulle's government in exile. Upon his return to France, Aubrac worked for the new government. He also took on several international roles...
The Guardian reports, Raymond Aubrac became a Grand Officer of the Légion d'Honneur and held several high military decorations. He contributed to keep the memoirs of the WWII alive.
He remained politically active to the end, visiting schools and colleges to talk about his wartime experiences.
A communist militant for many years later in life, Aubrac openly supported the socialist candidate François Hollande (o-LOND) for the now upcoming French presidential elections. JTA has Hollande's comment.
In our darkest times, he was, with Lucie Aubrac, among the righteous, who found, in themselves and in the universal values of our Republic, the strength to resist Nazi barbarism.

Lyon, France - a first impression
Lyon has some of the atmosphere of Paris but on a smaller scale. It is a very vibrant city with much to offer both the residents and tourists in its shopping and hotel facilities. The street markets along the river bank and the museums with specific interests such as, film, la resistance, art, and a fascinating one showing miniature film sets, are of international standard. It is also a major centre for antiques. For us, the Hotel Celestins was central and its owner gave us information above and beyond the call of duty. The restaurants vary from Michelin class to lower tourist, the best one we found is shown in the video. The atmosphere here was typically French, as were the diners, the food was simply excellent and terrific value for money. For those with children needing to burn off some energy then take the C5 bus from outside the Post building, next to the Place Bellecour, up to the Parc de la Tete d'Or. It has a zoo, botanical garden, lakes, miniature train and just about everything an outdoor person could need. And, with French hospitality, is absolutely free. If you are a tourist who has to superficially 'DO' a country or city, as if adding to a trophy list, then this might not be the place for you. However, if you have the adventurous spirit of an explorer then it most certainly is your kind of place, because it is a city where the intelligent visitor can immerse themselves in a culture and history that is truly, and most wonderfully, French.
Resistance museum of Belgium
The museum contains many original objects and documents.
These documents relate to the different categories and components of the Resistance (underground press, armed resistance, civil resistance, help to the resistant people, intelligence networks, escape lines, Jew rescue networks, victims of racial persecution)
The Museum also has thematic panels on the history of the 1st and 2nd World War: First World War and its consequences, the Spanish Civil War, the interwar period (20’s-40’s ), the Resistance in Belgium and Europe, military campaigns, …
The Museum welcomes specially the following visitors: Belgian citizens, tourists, schools (primary, secondary and higher), researchers of all kinds and all backgrounds, associations of all types and all age generational groups. It has set itself the main objective to raise awareness and sensitize all citizens to the dangers of an undemocratic system, whatever its form is. Our moral and civic purpose is to continue and transmit the ideals and spirit embodied by the Resistance in order to warn and prepare young generations to the present dangers of all forms of extremism of any kind.

Places to see in ( Pau - France )
Pau is a city in southwestern France, set along the Pyrenees mountains’ northern edge approximately 85 km from the Spanish border. A walk along central Pau’s Boulevard des Pyrénées offers countryside views and mountain panoramas on clear days. The boulevard leads up to the castle of Château de Pau, birthplace of King Henry IV of France and Navarre. It now displays tapestries, period furnishings and artworks.
The first thing you notice about Pau is the location. In the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department of the new huge region of Nouvelle Aquitaine, the city is surrounded by beautiful mountains. From here it’s a short drive through the spectacular National Pyrenees Park to the border with Spain and just 125 km (77 miles) or around a 90-minute drive from the top seaside resort of Biarritz on the Atlantic Coast. Pau became the capital of the kingdom on Navarre in 1512. Its royal status was secured through Henry of Bourbon. Born in Pau Castle, he became King of France in 1589.
Three centuries later Pau was discovered by a Scottish doctor, Alexander Taylor, who announced it as the place for cures of all kinds of ailments due to the great oceanic climate, warm and wet in the winter, and just delightfully warm in the summer. The English followed the somewhat dubious doctor’s recommendation and in the 19th century, flocked here, bringing with them all the English past times: horse racing, croquet, cricket and fox-hunting. The first 18-hole golf course in Europe was built here in 1860, and it was also the first to admit women to its range. The building of the railways brought other nations to this city beside the mountains while the French found Pau just as attractive. Pau became the most fashionable resort in western Europe and remained so up until 1914.
The central old part of Pau is pedestrianized, so it’s a pleasant, relaxed city to walk around. The Boulevard de Pyrénées makes the best starting point with views to the country on one side and the majestic mountains on the other. Only a small part remains of the original keep built in 1370. The building was thoroughly taken over by Louis-Philippe and Napoleon III in the 19th century and well renovated. There are only French guided tours, but even if you don’t understand much, it’s worth going in for the splendid interiors and series of Gobelin tapestries hung on the walls to impress past guests and keep the place warm. And you can wander the magnificent gardens for free.
The thoroughly ordinary soldier Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte was born here. You can see the story of how he fought in Napoleon’s armies, became Maréchal and ended up as King Charles XI of Sweden in the rooms here. Alot to see in Pau such as :

The Great Escape Camp
Video profile on the Great Escape Camp - Stalag Luft III in Zagan, Poland. Originally part of Upper Silesia, Germany, this was a POW camp for captured Allied airmen during World War II. The so-called Great Escape took place during the night of 24-25 March, 1944. RAF Squadron Leader Roger Bushell conceived and organized a massive escape of 200 prisoners; although different factors delayed the escape and only 76 got out of the 334-foot long tunnel, dug 30 feet below the surface. Out of those who experienced brief freedom, only three men made it to safety. Everyone else was re-captured, rounded up, and 50 men were executed by the GESTAPO. The story was the subject of many books and films, including John Sturges' The Great Escape (1963). Visit Stalag Luft III in Zagan, Poland on Alpventures Wolf's Lair Tour.
