At Mentally Retarded Children New Year's Matinee. Real Russia ep.21
Our friend Nataly, who showed for us her apartment in typical Soviet Union Khruscshyovka building in the 17th episode, works as an educator in the special center for mentally retarded children. Mostly kids with Down Syndrome and autism.
At the 30th of December, 2012 they had their New Year's Matinee but they never expected an epic fail that was going to happen with them. The person who promised to be their Father Frost catched the flue and told about some hours before the Matinee.
But Nataly called me (Sergey Baklykov) and desperately asked to help her and I immediately agreed. Even though I never been in the role of Father Frost (Russian analogue of Santa Claus) before, I decided that I will get it done. I wanted to help.
I also did understand that it could be a good episode for Real Russia. Fortunately, that Center for mentally retarded kids is at the same street where the TV channel where our cameraman Sergey Pichugin works. I called him and snatched from work for a couple of hours to film this.
I hope this video will show you that Russia is not without the kind people who helps the Centers like this work and that not all parents in Russia leave their kids with Down Syndrome or autism in Orphanages but care for them during all of their Life no matter what. I have to notice, this is not an Orphanage, this is just like a day care (kinder garten) but only for special children. All of these kids having parents.
Thank You for Watching!

Sabantuy. Farmer's Holiday. Real Russia ep.104
Sabantuy is a farmer’s holiday of the end of the spring sowing.
The word “sabantuy” comes out from Bashkir and Tatar language where “saban” literally means “plow” and “tuy” means “holiday, celebration”. So it’s the celebration of plow.
Sabantuy is a national holiday around Bashkir and Tatar people which is usually celebrated in the first days of June all over the rural areas.
The main distinctive elements of Sabantuy include the traditional sporting competitions such as Kurash (Tatar wrestling), horse racing, race-in-sack, pillar-climbing, egg-in-spoon-in-mouth-racing, sacks-battle on the crossbar, pot smashing, finding a coin in aqatıq (a beverage made from sour milk), and other contests. Such activities take place on the maydan, which would usually be located at the edge of a forest.
A tradition, called soran,] was held to collect a fare for guests of the festival and prizes for the winners of the contests. Rook's porridge, a ritual porridge, was cooked before the Sabantuy to treat children in the village. Another tradition was praying at the cemetery.
In the recent years Sabantuy is also often combined with the folk and pop music festivals, as well as accordion music festivals, named Play, accordion!
At the 12th of June, 2015, we drove 250km north-east from the city of Ufa and came to the Mesyagutovo village, which is located in Duvanskiy District of the Republic of Bashkortostan, Russia to one of the places where village people celebrated Sabantuy.
The horse race, kurash fighting, folk singing under accordion and truly Tatar songs from the residents of Ulkundyi village, a tatar village in Duvanskiy district of Bashkortostan, were waiting for us.

SERGE MARSHENNIKOV (1971) Russian painter ✽ Helen O'Hara - Love And Respect
Serge Marshennikov Biography
“I was seduced by Serge Marshennikov's alluring female oil portrait, The Pirate Style Bed. Marshennikov uses the languorous pose of his model, a delicate swatch of lace draped over her hip, and deep folds of luxuriant bed sheets, comforters and warm pillows to convey sensuality, femininity and the promise of endless pleasure that comes with waking each morning with original works of exquisite art.” Tomas Hall, art critique, Florida
Serge Marshennikov was born in 1971 in Ufa (Bashkiria, USSR). His grandfather was a general manager of a horse breeding company, his father an electric engineer and his mother a pre-school educator. Since before he can remember, Serge was always drawing, painting and sculpting from any material he could land his hands on. His mother encouraged Serge to study, and from an early childhood he had a succession of private teachers and attended multiple art studios. After receiving several awards for his children’s watercolor and pastel paintings, Serge decided to become a professional painter.
In 1995 he finished the Ufa Art College and then continued education at one of the most prestigious art academies in the world, The Repin Academy of Fine Art in St. Petersburg, Russia. As one of the most talented graduates of the academy, Serge was offered to stay for the post-graduate studies at the studio of an Academician, the Rector of the Academy, Professor Milnikov.
Serge’s first solo exhibition was in the gallery “Sangat” of his native UFA in 1995, a year after graduation. The show was a success and Serge was invited to exhibit at the Artists’ Union gallery. He then exhibited on a semi-annual basis, showing his work to collectors and peers in both St Petersburg and Ufa. Serge’s graduation work quickly caught the eye of faculty members from Brownwood University in Texas, and Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene. As a result, he exhibited during his post-graduation years in the art departments of both Universities.
Serge was awarded “Chairman’s Choice Award” at the 2008/2009 International Art Renewal Center’s salon, and received Certificate of Excellence for his outstanding achievement in art. He was chosen as “Top 30” in 2008 by the Portrait Society of America.
Lately Serge’s paintings have been successfully sold through important art auctions, including famous Christie’s of London and Bonham's in Knightsbridge. His work is in high demand, with paintings currently held in the Museum of Modern Art (El Paso), The Grace Museum (Abilene), and in many important private collections throughout the United States, Russia, England, Denmark, France and Japan.
Serge’s biggest influences were Andrew Wyeth & Lucian Freud. Serge is married, living in Russia with his 7 year-old daughter.
Serge Marshennikov is an artist originally hailing from Ufa, Bashkiria, Russia who has been actively creating art since childhood, and his skill set shows it. Marshennikov creates female portraits and other figurative nude oil paintings, and his work has been exhibited internationally throughout Russia, England, Denmark, France, and Japan. His work is consistently pursued by art collectors around the world which is no real surprise.

Rustam Khakimov. Russian The Voice Talent. Real Russia ep.62
Rustam Khakimov's YouTube Channel -
Rustam Khakimov is our friend and ex co-worker.
Before we've started Real Russia on YouTube, we used to work on a local cable TV channel. Rustam worked with us as a cameraman. But that's what he did for a living because in his heart he is a singer and musician.
He is singing and playing guital, and makes everything to reach success in this field.
At the moment on the biggest and most popular TV channel in Russia (Channel One) there the second season of most popular show going The Voice (Russian version).
Rustam Khakimov participated there.
He came for casting to the The Voice yet in 2012 year before the first season. But he was in the last group of candidates in casting and for this reason Channel One producers got enough of participants even before Rustam could show himself.
They said: Come again next year. We promise all of you will be in a first queue next year.
And they kept their word.
When Rustam came to Moscow this year in August, 2013 to casting he went through casting and was elected in amount of 150 participants out of 12,000 candidates.
So he was in the show and sang for the Judges (Russian singing stars). They really liked him but no one of them elected him in their team. But they said he has a great potential and they are waiting for him next year.
We hoped Channel One will at least show his perfomance but an air time is limited and, unfortunately, this season they haven't found a time for him and his perfomance never came up on TV.
But Rustam Khakimov is not going to give up and will come again next year.
However, we are proudly introduce you Rustam on our channel! This is the Real Russia!
The songs Rustam singing in this episode:
Ronan Keating When You Say Nothing At All
Rufus Wainwright Hallelujah
