Capital of the Urals ready to welcome the world
(4 Jun 2018) LEADIN:
As the FIFA World Cup approaches, Russian cities are preparing to welcome thousands of fans and guests from around the world.
Yekaterinburg, the Capital of the Urals and home to former Russian President, Boris Yeltsin, is no exception.
The city witnessed one of the most crucial moments of Russian history and proudly serves some impressive pelmeni dumplings too.
STORYLINE:
It's known as the Capital of the Urals, Yekaterinburg is getting to ready to play its part in Russia's 2018 World Cup.
Located in the heart of the Ural Mountains, opposition-minded Yekaterinburg has played a role in many crucial moments of Russia's history.
In 1918, the last Russian Czar, Nicholas II and his family were executed here.
Today, at the execution site, the Church on Blood - as it's known - stands as a monument to the event.
Built in 2003, on the ground floor it houses a restored basement, popularly known as the Shooting Room.
The history of the Romanov dynasty ended right behind us, explains historian Sergei Sokolov.
Here was the house of the engineer Ipatiev, located in the beginning of the 20th century, where Bolsheviks brought the last emperor and his family from Tobolsk in 1918.
Here they spent a few months, from April to July, and in mid-July, on night of the 16th, the whole family and servants were executed in the basement of this house.
The original Ipatiev house, where Nicholas II and his family were executed, was demolished by another historical figure, Boris Yeltsin, in 1977.
At that time, Yeltsin was the leader of the Sverdlovsk communist party, just starting his career.
Around 14 years later, he became the first president of a new, democratic Russia.
Yeltsin was born in the tiny village of Butka, about 250 kilometers (155 miles) east of Yekaterinburg.
He held a deep emotional connection to the region until his death in 2007.
To pay tribute to him, the Boris Yeltsin Presidential Center, one of the largest and most modern museums in Russia, was opened in 2015.
It exhibits not only explore the period of Russian history under Boris Yeltsin, but also Russian history as a whole.
Among other rarities exhibited in the center is this nuclear briefcase.
Boris Yeltsin was from here, from the Ural region, explains director Dina Sorokina.
He started his career here, in Sverdlovsk, as Yekaterinburg used to be known then, during the Soviet times.
And the beginning of his career certainly takes roots here, in the Ural region, in Sverdlovsk. However, there is also an emotional connection to it.
Yekaterinburg's restaurants specialise in dumplings - or 'pelmeni,' as they're known in Russia.
Historians say dumplings came to the Urals from China, but residents claim the Urals is actually home to the world-famous dish.
Nowadays, pelmeni come with many different fillings, but meat-filled dumplings are the most popular.
The classic recipe of pelmeni is quite simple - mincemeat of pork and beef is wrapped in thin, unleavened dough.
(Ural) people are working class. We work here, especially men, they work hard, explains chef Larisa Sychyova.
There are a lot of factories, that is why the priority is meat, meat, and meat. That is why in the Urals and Siberia (pelmeni) is our priority.
Ural dumplings can be found in almost every café or restaurant. It's claimed they're especially good with vodka.
For a late-night drink, there are dozens of bars and clubs located around the city centre.
The 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia runs 14 June - 15 July.

RUSSIAN REVOLUTION - WikiVidi Documentary
The Russian Revolution was a pair of revolutions in Russia in 1917 which dismantled the Tsarist autocracy and led to the rise of the Soviet Union. The Russian Empire collapsed with the abdication of Emperor Nicholas II and the old regime was replaced by a provisional government during the first revolution of February 1917 . Alongside it arose grassroots community assemblies which contended for authority. In the second revolution that October, the Provisional Government was toppled and all power was given to the soviets. The February Revolution was a revolution focused around Petrograd , the capital of Russia at that time. In the chaos, members of the Imperial parliament assumed control of the country, forming the Russian Provisional Government which was heavily dominated by the interests of large capitalists and the noble aristocracy. The army leadership felt they did not have the means to suppress the revolution, resulting in Nicholas's abdication. The soviets, which were dominate...

RUSSIA: MOSCOW: PROSTITUTION IS BOOMING
Russian/Nat
In Russia's new free market prostitution is booming.
Moscow's streets are packed with scantily-clad hookers who have flocked to the capital in search of a decent wage.
Prostitution is not a criminal offence but Moscow's hard-pressed police force have been charged with cleaning up the capital's streets.
But with the drastic increase in violent crime many policemen feel their efforts would be better spent elsewhere.
The free market has brought many improvements to Moscow's streets.
Bars, restaurants and night clubs now flourish in a city that was once drab and uninviting.
But together with the nightlife has come something else rarely seen during Soviet times - street prostitution.
Every evening, as Muscovites start to make their way home, hundreds of hookers appear on the streets to begin their working day.
The deal is struck by their pimps, former prostitutes themselves, who then summon the girls so the customers can make their choice.
A steady stream of cars cruises the streets across from Russia's parliament, one of the favourite pick-up spots for Moscow's call girls.
But as darkness falls the Moscow City police force embarks on its nightly attempt to make a dent in a business that now dominates downtown Moscow.
Prostitution in Russia is not a criminal offence but the government considers it an embarrassment and an eyesore.
Police make routine busts but without a law to charge the girls, have to release
them within a few hours.
The majority of the girls are from the provinces and other former republics, where unemployment is high and wages low.
They are charged with not having the proper documents to be in Moscow -- an
old Soviet law designed to limit movement into the capital.
Every evening police station 108 sees a constant stream of prostitutes.
The girls are processed and held for up to six hours before being put back on the streets. A bribe from their pimp can see them released immediately.
The head of Moscow's organised crime department says that since there is no law against prostitution, his men are powerless to get the girls off the streets permanently
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
Even though it is quite clear that they are prostitutes the girls are detained for passport irregularities, or no Moscow registration document, that is for things which have no
connection at all with prostitution
SUPER CAPTION: Vladimir Zolutnitsky, Chief of Moscow Organized Crime Department
In a good month a girl can earn up to three thousand dollars, a small fortune in Russia's bleak provincial towns and villages.
But with no red light district and no brothels, the job has more than its share of risks.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
You get into a car and you don't know what will happen when you get there -- who will be there or what they will do. There may be fifteen men waiting. Some girls have gone
missing for two months and then reappeared.
SUPER CAPTION Dasha, prostitute in Moscow
Women in Russia have been hit harder than most by the transition to a market economy. Particularly those from rural Russia where the economy is at a standstill.
The result has been a massive increase in the numbers of unemployed women who flock to the capital in search of any work they can find. Many of them turn to prostitution as a last resort.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
If there was work, If Yeltsin gave us the opportunity to work normally and for proper money then none of these girls would be walking the street.
SUPER CAPTION, Sveta, prostitute in Moscow
And that would suit the police, too.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
prostitution.

Tyumen
Tyumen is the largest city and the administrative center of Tyumen Oblast, Russia, located on the Tura River 2,500 kilometers east of Moscow.
Tyumen was the first Russian settlement in Siberia. Founded in 1586 to support Russia's eastward expansion, the city has remained one of the most important industrial and economic centers east of the Ural Mountains. Located at the junction of several important trade routes and with easy access to navigable waterways, Tyumen rapidly developed from a small military settlement to a large commercial and industrial city. The central part of Old Tyumen retains many historic buildings from throughout the city's history.
