Australia Drone Flight: Australia is a country and continent surrounded by the Indian and Pacific oceans. Its major cities – Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide – are coastal. Its capital, Canberra, is inland. The country is known for its Sydney Opera House, the Great Barrier Reef, a vast interior desert wilderness called the Outback, and unique animal species like kangaroos and duck-billed platypuses. The Outbacks arid Red Centre region is home to the remote town of Alice Springs, a hub for Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. The park is the site of the Olgas geologic formation and Uluru (Ayers Rock), both sacred to the local indigenous people. Closer to the east coast, Cairns Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park and Canberras National Museum of Australia both explore Aboriginal culture. The country is also known for outdoor activities like snorkelling, surfing, adventure sports and hiking. Visitors can explore rainforests, desert, beaches and alpine ranges, as well the Barossa Valleys vineyards, known for their Shiraz wines. // Western Australia, covering the entire western third of the country, is made up mostly of the arid Outback. Its population is concentrated in its fertile southwest corner, home to the Margaret River wine region and the riverside capital, Perth. In the far north, the Kimberley region is home to ancient Aboriginal rock art, the Bungle Bungle sandstone domes and Broome, with Cable Beach camels and a pearling industry. Across the Swan River from Perth is Fremantle, a port city noted for its 19th-century architecture. Also from Perth, the 1,000km Bibbulmun Track crosses forests, hills and coastline to Albany, site of annual whale migrations. North of the capital are the Pinnacles, wind-sculpted limestone pillars surrounded by sand dunes in Nambung National Park. The Ningaloo Coast has a long near-shore coral reef, whale sharks and karst caverns. Inland, the Karijini National Park has ochre-coloured gorges, rock pools and rock-wallabies. In the southwest interior, the remote gold-mining town of Kalgoorlie is home to 19th-century frontier buildings. [Google]

Sydney Metro: White Hart Inn, Kellyville
The White Hart Inn, uncovered at Kellyville after more than a century lost, has been listed on the NSW State Heritage Register.
Its foundations were discovered in 2013 by archaeologists near the intersection of Old Windsor and Windsor roads during heritage work for the skytrain section of the $8.3 billion Sydney Metro Northwest line.
The White Hart Inn discovery gives an insight into what life may have been like in this part of colonial Sydney. Aboriginal artefacts were also found in the surrounding area, showing the longstanding connection that Aboriginal people have to the region.
The decision to conserve the site was made after experts identified the significance of the find - an important piece of colonial heritage that reflects early European settlement patterns and life in a remote area.
Built in the late 1820s, the inn is believed to have been demolished around the turn of the 20th century – however, no one is still sure why it was lost to history.
Archaeologists have carefully excavated the site and catalogued finds – the site was then protected, with construction of the skytrain modified as a result.
The finds included:
• A toothpaste canister with Queen Victoria's image on it
• Coins that are almost 200 years old
• Salt container, inscribed ‘Weston and Westalis Superior British Table Salt’
• Slate pencils and slate used for writing, and ink bottles
• Crockery fragments including plates, cups, bowls and serving dishes in blue willow pattern or Asian style scenes
The artefacts will be transferred to the Australian History Museum at Macquarie University, where they will be on display to the public and available for research.
The White Hart Inn archaeological site is of state significance because it demonstrates the importance of the colony’s early road network and provides a rare surviving archaeological resource that provided valuable information about early inns in NSW.
Along the colony’s early major transport routes inns served as vital rest stops for travellers on long and exhausting road journeys. In the early days of settlement, inns also functioned as local court houses, venues for colonial inquiries, places to transact business and social meeting places.
The Inn has now been recognised as being of importance to the people of NSW as it enriches the understanding of our history and identity.
The site is now legally protected under the NSW Heritage Act 1977.
This important part of Sydney’s heritage will now be preserved as an educational and cultural resource for all the people of NSW.

Episode 6 Secret Location RRS Discovey 13th September 2014
History:
At the beginning of the 20th Century Antarctica was still an uncharted wilderness. Exploration was a daunting task, involving a long voyage through remote and tempestuous seas just to reach the continent. The 1901 British National Antarctic Expedition was the vision of Sir Clements Markham, President of the Royal Geographical Society. Naturally cautious, Markham saw the aims of the expedition as purely scientific. Being the first to reach the South Pole was never one of the objectives. By 1900 Markham had raised the necessary funds, now all he needed was a ship, and a man to lead the expedition.
The Ship -
As a major whaling centre Dundee’s shipyards had long experience of constructing ships robust enough to travel through the Arctic pack ice. It was this expertise that Markham harnessed to build RRS Discovery, the first vessel to be constructed specifically for scientific research. While the design was based on the great Dundee whalers, there were some modifications to be made. Magnetic surveys were to be an important part of the scientific work of the expedition. To be sure of complete accuracy an exclusion zone round the magnetic observatory was created, with no iron or steel allowed within 30 feet of the area.
Captain Robert Falcon Scott RN -
As leader of the expedition Markham wanted “a naval officer in the regular line... young and a good sailor with experience of ships under sail. He must have imagination and enthusiasm... be calm, yet quick and decisive in action.” His search ended with a young naval officer he had first encountered twelve years earlier, Lieutenant Robert Falcon Scott. Devon born, Scott had joined the navy at thirteen. Following a chance reunion with Markham, Scott applied for the post of expedition leader. He was appointed in June 1900 and promoted to Commander RN at the age of just 33. Though a rather shy man he was also steady, strong and, as later events were to prove, immensely courageous.

In this film we commemorate the ships that formed the backbone of the Royal Australian Navy in World War 2. Designed to be built quickly and in large numbers, these ships served in most of the main naval theatres of war and were indispensable in the initial stages of the war. A total of 60 were eventually built, and one is still afloat.
In January 1942 the Japanese submarine I-124 was sunk outside Darwin by HMAS Deloraine (see painting in the video), the first major submarine kill by the RAN.
The only ship of the class lost to enemy action in the war was HMAS Armidale. In this action, the bravery of one Australian naval rating, Ordinary Seaman Teddy Sheean, who kept firing at the attacking Japanese aircraft until the ship sank with him aboard has resonated to this day. The RAN has named a Collins class submarine in his honor.
This film was shot in Melbourne, Whyalla and Darwin. We are indebted to the staff at the excellent museums in all 3 places for their invaluable assistance, especially the staff at HMAS Whyalla. HMAS Whyalla can be visited by anybody visiting this South Australian coastal town, and is a striking and worthy sight on the road when entering from the North. HMAS Castlemaine is the last of this class afloat and is at Gem Dock, Williamstown, a suburb of Melbourne in Victoria. The ship is a wonderful floating museum and well worth visiting.
