Shopping in Vienna, Austria - Unravel Travel TV
(4) While it's unlikely you would visit Vienna solely for its shopping, the boutique scene make is an attractive retail destination, even for those used to shopping in Europe's world capitals. Vienna's most trendy shopping mile is the Mariahilfer Strasse which is located between the centre of the city and Westbahnhof. Here, hundreds of shops offer fashion, jewellery and accessories. Young fashion designers and offbeat stores can be found in many side streets in the area -- and with a bit of luck you can pick up a unique piece at a good price. Vienna's most exclusive shopping district is found right in the historic city centre. The most sought-after Austrian and international designers are found along the pedestrian area from the State Opera to St Stephen's Square and the Imperial Hofburg Palace. Here you can combine sightseeing with a unique shopping experience.
One of the most familiar Austrian brands is of course Svarkovski. The perk of shopping here is the excellent selection at a great price. There are huge sales in svarkovski several times a year so if you time your visit right, you could do what I did and stock up on lots of Christmas and birthday presents.

Vienna, Austria
Evidence has been found[by whom?] of continuous habitation in the Vienna area since 500 BC, when Celts settled the site on the Danube River. In 15 BC the Romans fortified the frontier city they called Vindobona to guard the empire against Germanic tribes to the north.
Close ties with other Celtic peoples continued through the ages. The Irish monk Saint Colman is buried in Melk Abbey and Saint Fergil served as Bishop of Salzburg for forty years. Irish Benedictines founded twelfth-century monastic settlements. Evidence of these ties persists in the form of Vienna's great Schottenstift monastery, once home to many Irish monks.
Vienna from Belvedere by Bernardo Bellotto, 1758
In 976 Leopold I of Babenberg became count of the Eastern March, a 60-mile district centering on the Danube on the eastern frontier of Bavaria. This initial district grew into the duchy of Austria. Each succeeding Babenberg ruler expanded the march east along the Danube, eventually encompassing Vienna and the lands immediately east. In 1145 Duke Henry II Jasomirgott moved the Babenberg family residence from Klosterneuburg in Lower Austria to Vienna. From that time, Vienna remained the center of the Babenberg dynasty.
In 1440 Vienna became the resident city of the Habsburg dynasty. It eventually grew to become the de facto capital of the Holy Roman Empire (800–1806) in 1437 and a cultural centre for arts and science, music and fine cuisine. Hungary occupied the city between 1485 and 1490.
In the 16th and 17th centuries Christian forces stopped Ottoman armies twice outside Vienna (see Siege of Vienna, 1529 and Battle of Vienna, 1683). A plague epidemic ravaged Vienna in 1679, killing nearly a third of its population.

My Trip to Salzburg and Vienna -- A Musical Adventure!
In 2009, Nick travelled to beautiful Salzburg and Vienna, Austria with a group of 11 travelers, most of whom attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. The group was led by Dr. David Nelson, and explored many of the famous musical sites there -- including the homes and graves of Ludwig van Beethoven and W.A. Mozart. This video documents that trip in photos, sound, and video.
This is a 2012 1080p HD Remaster of the original film. Hits prior :: 261

Thousands of refugees begin march to Vienna from Budapest
Thousands of refugees who have been stuck for days at Budapest's Keleti train station gather their belongings and began marching out of the city, vowing to make it to Austria on foot after Hungarian authorities blocked them from boarding Western-bound trains.

They carried their belongings in bags and backpacks as they snaked through Budapest in a line stretching nearly a half-mile long, hampering traffic at times, as they began the 171-kilometer journey (106-mile) to the Austrian border
