Musmeah Yeshua Synagogue (Hebrew: בית כנסת מושמאה ישוע) is the last remaining Jewish house of worship in Downtown Yangon and Burma's only synagogue. The synagogue stands nestled between Indian paint shops and Muslim traders on a small street near the city centre. A plaque at the entrance of the building states that the present stone building which was built between 1893 – 1896 replaced an earlier, smaller wooden structure that was erected in 1854. It is one of 188 sites on the Yangon City Development Council’s list of Heritage Buildings. It serves the few remaining Jews of the country - mostly descendants of Sephardic Jewish Iraqis.

The lovingly maintained interior of this 1896 building contains a bimah (platform holding the reading table for the Torah) in the centre of the main sanctuary and a women’s balcony upstairs. The wooden ceiling features the original blue-and-white Star of David motif. The synagogue was once the focal point of an influential community of Sephardic Jews from India and Baghdad that at its height in the early 20th century numbered 2500.

The synagogue stands nestled between Indian paint shops and Muslim traders on a small street near the city centre. A plaque at the entrance of the building states that the present stone building which was built between 1893 – 1896 replaced an earlier, smaller wooden structure that was erected in 1854. It is one of 188 sites on the Yangon City Development Council’s list of Heritage Buildings. It serves the few remaining Jews of the country - mostly descendants of Sephardic Jewish Iraqis.
The synagogue was built for the increasing numbers of Baghdadi Jews from the Middle East, and Bene Israel and Cochini Jews from India arriving during Burma's Colonial era. The plot of land was granted by the British Colonial Government and following Burma’s independence, an extension was granted by the Burma authorities.
Before the outbreak of the Second World War, the community numbered 2,500 persons. Many Jews left due to the Japanese occupation and more followed after the Burmese army seized power in 1962 where most businesses were nationalised in the 1960s and 1970s. The community once had 126 Sifrei Torah. A second synagogue, Beth El, was opened in 1932, and some 700 graves are found in the well-kept cemetery on 91st Street.
During Cyclone Nargis in May 2008, the synagogue lost its roof and sustained water damage.
The current Jewish population of Myanmar, including Yangon, is less than 19, with Moses Samuels (משה בן יצחק שמואלי)[5] having died on May 29, 2015, in Yangon. Surviving him are his widow, Nelly (נלי); and his children Samuel Sammy (שמואל בן משה), Dina (דינה בת משה), and Kaznah (גזנה בת משה) Samuels.
The Last Jews of Myanmar
Myanmar is well-known for its diversity and perhaps the best place to see this is Yangon, the country's largest city. Here visitors can find peoples from most of the nation's many ethnic groups like the Shan, Kachin and Chin. Yangon is also the best place to see Myanmar's different religious groups. Christians, Muslims, Hindus and Buddhists all call Yangon home. But what's less well-known is that Yangon has a Jewish community, albeit one that is tiny and on the brink of extinction.
One of the few remaining examples of the once thriving Jewish culture is the Musmeah Yeshua Synagogue. Situated in the Muslim section of town it is the last remaining Jewish house of worship in Myanmar. COCONUTS TV visited the temple to meet Sammy Samuels, one of the temple's caretaker's.

Myanmar's last synagogue becomes a top tourist attraction
Musmeah Yeshua is the last surviving synagogue in Myanmar.
The synagogue has stood in the centre of downtown for over 100 years -- in it's heyday it served a community of about 2,500 Jews.
But most of the Jewish community fled during Japanese occupation in the Second World War.
But a recent rise in tourism has put the synagogue back on the map.

We Said Go Travel September 29, 2012 Around 2pm we were off to visit the Moseah Yeshuah Synagogue at 85 26th Street. The man at the desk wanted to know, Why do you want to go there? George told him, We are Jewish and Lisa's friend, Ellen, knows Moses the caretaker. He told George, There are only seven Jews left in Myanmar.
He wrote the address for us in local language and explained that it also said Jewish Mosque as that is how people would know it. We realized after we visited the synagogue that there was also a mosque on the same street.
When we arrived at the synagogue, we were told that Moses was out. I was not sure if we would be able to visit as it was Saturday, Shabbat. I did really want to ask questions but we had an enormous language barrier. I did wish him, Shana Tova, as Jewish New Year had only just passed and he smiled. We took photos, and said Todah Rabah, (Thank you in Hebrew). I loved seeing George in Myanmar wearing a kippah and explaining the synagogue to our two German friends.

Jews of Burma (Myanmar) - Lillian Frank
Lillian Frank, philanthropist and owner of Melbourne's most famous hairdressing salon describes growing up in a privileged family in Rangoon, Burma's magical, diverse and integrated Jewish community. In 1900 the Jewish community of Burma was said to number 508 individuals. The community consisted of Bene Israel Jews, while other Jewish families had their origins in Cochin, India or Iraq.
Before the Second World War the population peaked at around 2,500 before the Japanese invasion changed their existence for ever with many fleeing or interned. Today, few Jewish families live in Burma, although many with roots in that community return to the blue and white Musmeah Yeshua synagogue to consult the synagogue's ancient register of births, deaths and marriages and to talk with its charming caretaker.
