Window on the Hawkesbury
The Hawkesbury River in New South Wales, Australia was the lifeblood of the first white settlers in Australia. Sydney Cove was initially unsuited to Settlement. When the early explorers found their way 120 km up the Hawkesbury they found fresh water and fertile soil. Small towns like Richmond, Windsor, Wilberforce, Ebenezer, Sackville and Wisemans Ferry were established on the banks of the river. Convict labour was used to build roads and bridges linking Sydney to the Western outposts. The river was always a formidable barrier until Solomon Wiseman built the first ferry service across the river. It is little wonder that he become known as the King of the Hawkesbury. Today it remains an important part of the Sydney region and a beautiful rural escape only an hour away from Sydney.

Zero Mass Water | Dr. Kulea Brings SOURCE Hydropanels to the Samburu Girls Foundation
The Samburu Girls Foundation and Zero Mass Water | SOURCE
I believe that when girls are educated, the community has a better future. - Dr.Josephine Kulea, Founder of the Samburu Girls Foundation
Dr. Josephine Kulea founded the Samburu Girls Foundation to provide young girls an alternative path to harmful cultural practices common in the region. As the girls’ home away from home, Dr. Kulea sought a water solution for the foundation’s campus to support residents’ health and wellness.
Drinking water is a vital part of any healthy living and learning environment, yet the foundation did not have access to reliable, running water. To bring water to the campus, residents would walk nearly 2 miles to the nearest river to collect water. Time spent fetching water or ill from the river’s poor water quality was time lost in studies, socializing, and preparing the girls to be leaders.
In June 2018, the Samburu Girls Foundation partnered with Hip Hop Architecture and the University of Wisconsin to bring safe, reliable water to the more than 200 young women studying at the institution. With 40 SOURCE Hydropanels installed on campus, Dr. Kulea ensures her students have the water they need to grow and thrive.
