Vellore (formerly known as Rayavelur or Vellaimaanagar) is a Sprawling city and the administrative headquarters of Vellore District in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Located on the banks of the Palar River in the north-eastern part of Tamil Nadu, the city has been ruled, at different times, by the Pallavas, Medieval Cholas, Later Cholas, Vijayanagar Empire, Rashtrakutas, Carnatic kingdom, and the British. Vellore has four zones (totally 60 wards) which cover an area of 87.915 km2 and has a population of 423,425 based on the 2001 census.[1][3] It is located about 135 kilometres (84 mi) west of Chennai and about 210 kilometres (130 mi) east of Bengaluru. Rayappa Kasi Vellore Temple Just Pictures, India

One of the monuments of Vellore is the fort and its exact date of construction could not be established, in the absence of proper records. A very close examination of the stone inscriptions suggests that the fort in all probability might have been built during the rule of Chinna. Bommi Nayak (1526 to 1595A. D) . The fort is one of the most perfect specimens of Military architecture in S.India.

The Jalakandeswarar Temple inside the fort is very fine example of Vijayanagar architecture. The Kalyanamantap, on the left of the entrance, with intricate caring and delicacy of exaction, bears testimony to the engineering marble and advanced state of sculpture of the times. Another land mark that has put Vellore on the center stage of Medical world is the Christian Medical College Hospital. Dr . IDA Scudder, the American lady, with a missionary zeal, started her Medical work in 1900 A.D. by setting up a very small Hospital, which in the last hundred years has grown into a premier Medical Institution of international repute. The central prison in Vellore , set up in 1830 A.D. is another Historically important land mark as some eminent personalities and Freedom Fighters like Thiru. Rajaji, Thiru C.N. Annadurai, Thiru. K. Kamaraj , the former presidents of India Thiru. V.V.Giri, Thiru. R.VenkataRaman had served their prison terms here. The other note worthy monuments are the Mausoleums located in Aruganthampoodi area on the Vellore - Arcot road, where the family members of Tippu Sultan were buried and the Muthu mandapam on the banks of river of palar, a memorial raised by the Tamil Nadu Government to honor Vikarama Rja Singha , the last Tamil King who ruled Kandy (Srilanka ) from 1798 to 1815 A.D. He was imprisoned in Vellore fort for 17 years.

Gangaikonda Cholapuram Temple, a Historic place in Tamil Nadu, India

Gangaikonda Cholapuram is located at Thanjavur (Tanjore) in Tamil Nadu.
In the early 11th century, the temple got built by Rajendra Chola son of Rajaraja Chola,after his victorious march to river Ganga on Northern India.
Gangaikonda Cholapuram is regarded as the reproduction of Brihadisvara Temple that was built by Rajaraja Chola.
The superb architecture of the temple boasts of a 9 storey vimanam that extends to the height of 185 feet. Facing the east direction, Gangai Konda Cholapuram embraces incredible sculptures and carvings.
The temple was surrounded by a huge fort-like wall, the outer wall largely destroyed during the English rule (1896) to reuse the building material (granite rocks) for constructing the Lower Anicut the dam built across river Kollidam.
The Vimana with its recessed corners and upward movement presents a striking contrast to the straight-sided pyramidal tower of Tanjavur. As it rises to a height of 160 feet, shorter than the Tanjavur tower, and often described as the feminine counterpart of the Tanjavur temple.The Vimana is flanked on either side by small temples.
The sanctum sanctorum of the temple is a four meter high lingam.The sanctum is surrounded by two walls,the inner and outer, providing worship area for the royal family.
The Shiva Linga in the temple is the biggest in size among the Lingas in Tamilnadu temples. This is made of a single lime stone 200 metres far from the sanctum sanctorum and placed on ground.
Sun light falls on the Nandhi each day reflecting on the Linga. Even if all lights in the sanctum are put off, devotees can see the Lord in the sunlight.One small Nandhi also infront of the big Nandhi.
The sculptures erected here are as artistic as found in any other temples of Cholas. The most interesting are Nataraja (Shiva in the form of a Cosmic dancer) ,Ardhanareshwar (the man-woman manifestation of Lord Shiva) and Coronation of King Rajendra Chozhan by Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
In the north-east a well called lion-well (simhakeni) with the lion figure guarding its steps.According to tradition Rajendra I poured a part of the Ganges water brought from his famous expedition into the well to sanctify it.

OPS says Meenakshi Amman Temple would be renovated soon

The damaged section of the Sri Meenakshi Amman Temple would be renovated with the help of experts to look as exactly as it did before the fire accident, said deputy chief minister O Panneerselvam.He said at Madurai airport on Sunday that fire had damaged a section of the mandapam and that the fire service personnel were in the process of removing the debris. All steps would be taken to renovate the structure with the help of the department of archaeology, he said. Investigation is on into the fire accident and action will be initiated based on the reports.

Fire 400-yr-old mandapam suffers extensive damage

Madurai: The Veera Vasantharayar mandapam, constructed over 400 years ago in 1611, has been extensively damaged in the fire that raged through it on Friday night. A stability study of the mandapam is being carried out by a team of engineers. Since most of the 150 shops on the temple premises were in the mandapam and adjoining areas, 36 of them were gutted in the incident.

District collector K Veera Raghava Rao, who inspected the temple premises again on Saturday morning, said that five fire engines and over 60 fire service personnel had toiled for over three hours to put out the fire which started at 10.40 pm on Friday and continued till 1 am on Saturday. He said that police investigation was on to determine the cause of the fire and action would be initiated based on their report.

Many of the intricately designed pillars of the 7,000sqft Veera Vasantharayar mandapam had suffered extensive damage. Asked about the security aspect, of some of the shops being run by non-Hindus, the collector said that this too would be investigated. Darshan at the temple was going on as usual and only the damaged mandapam was cordoned off, the collector said.

Devotees pointed out that the shops sold inflammable products like plastics articles, books and wooden toys. CCTV footages of the area are also to be reviewed. Hindu organisations staged a protest demanding that the temple clear all the shops from its premises and that action be taken against the people responsible for the fire. Trustee board chairman Karumuttu T Kannan and joint commissioner of the temple, N Natarajan, among others were also present.

Meanwhile, HR and CE Minister Sevvoor S Ramachandran, who inspected the temple in the evening along with ministers Sellur K Raju and R B Udayakumar, reiterated the collector's statements. He said that the temple had been equipped with fire extinguishers as in all temples in the state. A decision on whether to remove the shops would be based on the report of the committee constituted to investigate the cause of the fire.
