If you want to avoid the crowds at the Great Wall of China we recommend a few things. Firstly don't go to the Great Wall of China on a Weekend, there will be a lot more people there and you will miss out on the sights. Secondly head to Mutianyu Great Wall , although this is quite a developed section of the wall, it gives you a real sense of the size and importance of the Great Wall of China. Thirdly we recommend taking the bus there, although you can take a tour to the Great wall of China it is always recommended to take the bus, Chinese tourists will often take the bus and it is a great way to do China travel on a budget.
The Mutianyu toboggan, the Mutianyu Cable Car and the Mutianyu chairlift are all great ways to get up and down to the wall. But we recommend for the best experience at the great wall of china to go up the chairlift and take the toboggan back down. The China Great Wall sled ride or Mutianyu luge are totally worth it, one of our most fun experiences in China. Just make sure you leave enough space between you and the other guests to give enough speed.

Mutianyu Great Wall | How to get to the Mutianyu Great Wall of China by public transport
It is very easy to access the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall of China by public transport if you know what to do.
Find heaps more photos on our blog post about how to get to Mutianyu Great Wall:
Watch the video and for your reference, we have provided you with the steps of what to do below:
1. Go to Dongzhimen station (located on subway line 2)
2. Get the 916 express bus to Beidajie 怀柔北大街 (Do not catch another bus including the 980 as there have been bus-taxi-scams where the bus drops you in a random location and you are forced to take a taxi). It costs 12 Yuan or 6 Yuan if you have a public transport card.
3. Once you arrive at the Beidajie stop 怀柔北大街 go across the road and wait for the 23 or 24 bus to Mutianyu Great Wall
慕田峪长城. The bus driver will direct you where to get off or look for the bridge shown in the video. At this bus station, taxi drivers will try and convince you not to get the bus as it 'is not running'. This is untrue, it runs everyday until 7pm. The 23 or 24 bus costs 3 Yuan without a transport card or 1.5 Yuan with a transport card.
4. Walk 5 minutes down the road and you have reached the entrance to the Great Wall. Tickets cost 45 Yuan with a choice to buy a shuttle for an additional 15 Yuan. They will automatically charge you for the shuttle so indicate if you do not want it. It is a 1 - 1.5km walk if you do not take the shuttle to the Great Wall entrance.
5. You can either walk to the top of the Great Wall (30-40 minutes uphill) or take a cable car to the top (100 Yuan). In this section of the Great Wall there is a Toboggan ride downhill.
We highly recommend this section of the Great Wall as there are hardly any crowds and the views are great!

How NOT to do the Great Wall of China | Mutianyu | Beijing, China
The great wall is something everyone needs to see if they make it to China. It's one of the greatest structures in the world and yes it's as amazing as you've heard. 6,000 kilometers of wall and there are plenty of options when it comes to which section of the wall you should visit. We went with Mutianyu and though it was awesome stepping off the gondola and onto the wall, we did a few things that we would change if we could do it again. Take some tips from us and see how to do the great wall the right way, by avoiding our mistakes.
We ended up booking a private car through Klook, the driver waited for us till we were done and it was a smooth ride back after our exhaustingly cold adventure. Here's the link the Mutianyu private transfer:

China's Great Wall at Mutianyu, a tour from the Four Seasons Hotel in a BMW 5 Series. The drive to the Great Wall, Cable Car up and down, a walk along the Great Wall and the drive back to Beijing, past the 2008 Olympic Stadium. Amazing feeling walking on the Great Wall of China...
How to go to the Great Wall Mutianyu by public bus
This video shows how to get to the Great Wall at Mutianyu in Beijing by public bus.
Here is a summary of how to do it:
- Take the subway line 2 to the Dongzhimen station
- Take exit C and follow signs to the Transport Center
- Enter the transport center (next to the KFC) and look for bus 916 Express
- 916 Express is written as 916块
- bus fare is 12RMB or 6RMB if you have the transportation card (Yikatong)
- The bus takes a little over one hour to reach the village of Huairou. In Huairou you get off at the Huairou Bei Da Jie stop. Stops are announced in Chinese only. Let the driver know that you are getting off at Beijing-based Da Jie.
* **One or two stops before Bed Da Jie, someone will stick their head in the bus and yell Mutianyu Great Wall and wave you out. Do not pay attention to the scammers. The will overcharge you to take you there.***
- At Bei Da Die, cross the street to take bus H23 or H24 (5RMB). The ride will be about 15-20 minutes.
- Near that bus stop there will be some drivers with mini vans who will offer to take you to Mutianyu. It is ok to take these vans but negotiate a rate of 5RMB per person.
- Note that when returning to Beijing, you will take bus 916 at this bus stop.

Great Wall of China, Beijing - Winter is the best time to visit China!
The Great Wall of China is a World Heritage wonder and the only man-made structure that can be seen from outer space. It's a jaw-dropping sight at any time of the year but for a special treat, go in winter. You'd be surprised to find that winter is the best time to visit China and to explore the Great Wall without the crowds. The winter wonderland landscape is ethereal, especially when it snows on the Great Wall.
When visiting the Great Wall there are several places you can climb the wall. You can take a Badaling Great Wall tour or a Mutianyu Great Wall tour.
Visiting the Great Wall of China is one of the most iconic things to do when you're in Beijing. Walking the Great Wall of China is something everyone should try at least once. You don't have to walk the whole way. Well, you'd have to be pretty fit to do so!
It's a day trip to visit while staying in Beijing. My tour was organised by Bespoke Beijing. I stayed at China World Summit Wing in the Shangri-La Beijing.

Great Wall of China - Best Scenery Mutianyu
The Great Wall. Huairou District, China.
We left Beijing in the early morning to reach the Mutianyu Great Wall, one of the best preserved sections. The other famous options are Badaling which is usually a lot more crowded and Jinshanling which is farther and the area was under reconstruction when we visited China.
In Beijing we booked a private transfer to the Great Wall and the service was excellent. I can highly recommend Mark’s Guide & Driver Service. The trip by car was around one hour and a half since there wasn't a lot of traffic.
We bought the tickets for the entrance, the cableway (chair lift) to reach the Great Wall and the Toboggan Run (Slideway / Luge) to come back and we paid around 160 CNY for each person.
The cable car took us near the tower N.4 and we first headed east towards the tower N.1 the Big Corner. After that we went back and we headed west until we reached the last tower N.23 of the Mutianyu Great Wall section. Besides that tower, you'll find a section of the wild Jiankou Great Wall that hasn't been restored. The view and the panorama were amazing, stunning, breathtaking! It was the best scenery with a clear sky and orange, yellow, green leaves and trees!
On the way back we took the Slideway / Luge. The Toboggan Run was fun but since it was crowded unfortunatly it wasn't possible to go down at full speed.
Eventually our driver took us back to Beijing.
If you want to save money, you can also choose to reach the Mutianyu Great Wall using the public transports.
We visited the Great Wall in October, which is one of the best time along with April, May and September.

Great Wall of China MUTIANYU Open Air Ski Lift - The Mutianyu section of the Great Wall of China is a perfect section to visit if you have children or mobility issues.
There three ways to get to the top of the Great Wall at the Mutianyu section. You can hike for an hour, take the enclosed ski lift or the open air ski lift. We chose the Open Air Ski Lift to watch tower 6.
This episode will help you decide if the open air ski lift is right for you. You will see the stunning views, experience the ride as we did, and get a feel for the dismount.

Beijing vlog Part I includes visits to Beijing's Hutongs(Nanluoguxiang), Wangfujing Street, and Mutianyu section of The Great wall of China. We visited around mid October, after china's golden week holiday. We chose Mutianyu because it is less crowded and has the Toboggan ride.

BEIJING TOUR | The Great Wall | Mutianyu | Tourist Attractions in China
The Great Wall of China is one of the miracles in the history of world architecture. Starting from the ancient Zhou Dynasty in China, the emperor began to build a wall on mountains to resist foreign enemies. The construction of the Great Wall has lasted for thousands of years until the Ming Dynasty. With a total length of more than 21,000 kilometers, it is an architectural miracle that has crossed the historical river and is known throughout the world. The Great Wall is the first choice for foreign tourists when they come to China. In this video, it seems as if you can almost touch the history of ancient China. And we are showing you a steep and beautiful scenic spot called Mutianyu in the Great Wall.

Mutianyu Great Wall (Cable Car & Toboggan) 2017
The best entry point to Great Wall is through MuTianYu.
The best experience will be going up by Cable Car & coming down by Toboggan. Ticket RMB 120/pax for Cable Car & Toboggan (28/4/2017, price might be different from time to time)
Note: Don't go up to Great Wall by walking. Save the energy to walk along the Great Wall after you go up by Cable Car. Trust me, Great Wall is too long for you to walk, so save some energy to witness different scenery.
