Civil War USCT Memorial at Philadelphia National Cemetery
On Saturday, April 21, 2018, a new Civil War memorial for the United States Colored Troops (USCT) was unveiled in a special ceremony at Philadelphia National Cemetery. This is the first of its kind in Philadelphia to recognize and honor black soldiers, who, according to Abraham Lincoln, were essential to saving the Union.
The Mütter Museum co-sponsored the dedication ceremony of the interpretive sign as the latest in a series of annual events commemorating the medical dimension of the Civil War. These events augment the exhibition, Broken Bodies, Suffering Spirits: Injury, Death, and Healing in Civil War Philadelphia. The exhibition, which opened in 2013 and closes in late 2019, highlights stories and experiences of a white soldier, black soldier, physician, and female nurse, framed by the words of poet Walt Whitman.

Museum of medical horror in Philadelphia
The Mutter Museum of the History of Medicine in Philadelphia is one of the main contenders for the role of the most eccentric and macabre museums in the world. It was founded in 1787 at a local college. The museum has a unique collection of most terrible physical abnormalities that can happen to a human body.
Thomas Mutter, the creator of these blood-chilling, but incredibly interesting collections, wanted to prove that medicine --was both science and art. The museum displays an amazing exhibition of deformed bones, internal organs, wax models of various pathologies and many other incarnations of most horrible nightmares.
Many compare the American museum to the Museum of Curiosities in Russia's St. Petersburg. Not all of its artifacts are real: many deformities and body parts are made of wax, but preserved bodies and organs strike imagination, showing visitors a realistic picture of life. Looking at some of the displayed exhibits can be hard. This is a heartbreaking sight and visitors may experience a psychological shock.
But the picture of the anomalies of the human body is extremely attractive from an intellectual standpoint. It provides an answer to one of the most interesting questions about the nature of man.

Doctors Bill written by Benjamin Rush in 1787

Every Monday The Director of the Mütter Museum takes a minute to showcase an item from our collection. This week Robert showcases a document from our library stacks cage. The document is a doctors bill written by Benjamin Rush in 1787. Benjamin Rush was one of the founding members of The College of Physicians of Philadelphia and a signer of the declaration of independence. It records visits to a family of a Mrs. Gibson in philadelphia over a period of time. Most of the visits are to look after sick children. The last item is really interesting it's for inoculations. Vaccination for smallpox. Smallpox was eradicated from our planet a generation ago and it was one of the worst disease of mankind but they could still vaccinate over two hundred years ago.

Reset, Get Set, Go: Philadelphia Day Trip
We took the chance to be shown Philadelphia by a native Philadelphian (is that what they're called?). We visited the Mütter Museum, Betsy Ross House, National Constitution Center, the Liberty Bell, Jim's Steaks, and all of Sal's high school haunts. It was super cold but loads of fun!
The instruments of Dr. Physick
Dr. Philip Syng Physick was a renowned University of Pennsylvania trained surgeon born during the American Revolution. His Society Hill Philadelphia home is now a museum showcasing, among other things, the surgical instruments he used to operate on historical figures such as Chief Justice John Marshall, First Lady Dolly Madison, and the daughters of Presidents' John Adams and James Monroe.
His great, great, great grandson J Dell Connor, tells his story.
The Cabinet of Death: Tales of Conservation and Stories from the Mütter Abditory
Using the example of the Mütter Museum, this webinar will cover important information for anyone who oversees a collection that contains human remains, natural history collections, medical models or casts, instrumentation, or chemicals/pharmaceuticals. Located in Philadelphia, the Mütter Museum, founded in 1863 by The College of Physicians of Philadelphia, contains a collection of medical specimens, anatomical and pathological specimens, wax models, and antique medical equipment.
This webinar will look at the how the Museum has upgraded the storage and preservation of its important and particular collections to meet 21st century standards. What are the “unique” storage issues inherent in a medical museum’s collection and what needs to be considered when dealing with human remains and medical specimens – no matter what kind of institution? What are the hazards? What are the opportunities? What needs to be considered to protect specimens and maintain their importance for study and education?
Presenter Anna Dhody, MFS, an experienced forensic anthropologist, is the curator of the Mütter Museum of The College of Physicians of Philadelphia where she oversees the Museum’s “disturbingly informative” collection, and works to provide a unique, illuminating experience for its 175,000-plus annual visitors. In addition to being the Museum’s curator, since 2014, she has served as the Director of the Mütter Institute, the research arm of the Museum. During her tenure at the Mütter Museum, Ms. Dhody has curated many exhibits and she has also collaborated with scholars from around the world to conduct research on the Mütter’s collection. One of her main goals is to show that a 19th century collection can have 21st century relevance, academically, medically and artistically.
Before joining the Mütter, Dhody served as an osteologist at Harvard University’s Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology. In 2003, she was involved with the United Nations Development Programme and the Public Ministry of Peru, identifying some of the estimated 69,000 Desaparecidos, “the disappeared,” victims of state terrorism. Her book, “The Underground Crime Scene: The Use of Archaeological Excavation Techniques in the Recovery of Buried Crime Scene Evidence,” is currently used by law enforcement agencies in several countries. She has advised other institutions on the creation of medical museums in Barbados and Texas. She is a consultant for the Philadelphia Medical Examiner’s Office, conducting forensic anthropological analysis. And, if all that isn’t enough, she has done a large number of informative videos using the collections, including the series, Guess What’s on the Curator’s Desk and the Mütter Minute.

PHILADELPHIA - USA Travel Guide | Around The World
Philadelphia, located in Southeastern Pennsylvania, in the Mid-Atlantic region, is the fifth most-populous city in the United States. Often referred to as Philly, the city is coterminous with Philadelphia County. Philadelphia sits adjacent to the New Jersey and Delaware borders, and as such, its metropolitan area encompasses counties in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.
Philadelphia, once the capital of the United States, plays an exemplary role in the history and life of the nation. Its colonial legacy and architecture are almost unrivaled and its universities, museums, companies and laboratories are world class. The city has also become an increasingly important cultural and artistic center as well in the past few decades. As Philadelphia rebounds from its mid-20th century decline, the city is now seen as a model for sustainable urban growth and a surprisingly affordable haven for those seeking the best of urban American life without the expense or pretense of other neighboring East Coast cities.
Travelers planning to visit multiple attractions may benefit from Philadelphia CityPASS, which grants admission to 6 Philadelphia attractions within 9 days of first use for a much reduced rate and includes expedited entry in some cases. The included attractions are: The Franklin Institute; Adventure Aquarium; Phila Trolley & The Big Bus Company, 24 hours of on-off privileges; Philadelphia Zoo; Option Ticket One with choice of either The Academy of Natural Sciences or the National Constitution Center and Option Ticket Two with choice of Please Touch Museum or Eastern State Penitentiary. A Weekend in Philly offers a detailed itinerary that includes several of these attractions.
Much of Philadelphia's art requires not a dollar to see and not a building to enter. Philadelphia has the largest collection of public art in the nation, courtesy of the city's innovative Mural Arts Program, designed to stop graffiti and enliven the city's buildings. They even provide a free tour. Other public art of note includes the many glass mosaics found throughout the city; a sampling of this great public art can be seen on South St. east of Broad.
Center City West is home to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Barnes Foundation, Academy of Natural Sciences, Franklin Institute Science Museum, Mutter Museum, Rosenbach Museum & Library and Rodin Museum. Center City East is home to the African American Museum, and Atwater Kent Museum of Philadelphia History. Old City is home to the National Museum of American Jewish History and Independence Seaport Museum. West Philly is home to the Please Touch Museum North Philly is home to the Wagner Free Institute of Science.
For most visitors, the landing point will be Center City, the downtown section of Philadelphia. It is bounded by Vine St. to the north, the Delaware River to the east, South St. to the south, and the Schuylkill River to the west. The 2010 Center City residential population of 57,000 makes it the third most populated central business district in America, behind New York City and Chicago. Other popular districts to visit are Old City, West Philly, and South Philly.
