The view from atop Godaisan (Mt. Godai, 五台山) in Kochi City is one of the most picturesque you will ever see.
There is also a nice flower garden there, the Chikurinji Temple, as well as a few cats to greet you. While not easy to reach at the top of a mountain, the view more than makes it worth it.
One way to get to the summit is the My Yu bus, which goes from Kochi Station to Godaisan and Katsurahama Beach.

A peacemaker between the Choshu and Satsuma clan and a key figure in ending Japan’s feudal period, Sakamoto Ryoma is Kochi’s favorite son. Visitors can find the Sakamoto Ryoma Memorial Museum here at Katsurahama Beach, with displays of his life and his involvement in shaping modern Japan.

Closed: Opened All Year Round
Admission: 500 yen (excluding special exhibitions)
The Tosa Dog Fighting Center is located here as well. A unique facility, the dogs here are dressed up to fight in a fighting ring. Though the “matches” are not every day, visitors may wish to visit the museum located within the facility to learn more about this Koichi practice.

In addition to the Sakamoto Ryoma Memorial Museum and Tosa Dog Fighting Center, visitors can visit a small aquarium on the beach and a shrine. The restaurants nearby serve Kochi’s local delicacy, katsuo no tataki (bonito).

Within downtown Kochi in Shikoku lies Mount Godaisan, famous for its beautiful views of the city. A group of visiting Chinese priests named Mount Godaisan after a mountain in China.
And on Mount Godaisan lies Chikurinji Temple, number 31 on the Shikoku Pilgrim Map. Visitors interested in cultural as well as scholastic Buddhist training should visit Chikurinji Temple. This temple was founded by the same group of visiting Chinese priests who named the mountain.
Within the temple grounds, visitors will come across various beautiful halls and structures. The 5-story pagoda on the temple grounds is breathtaking. In addition, for a small fee, visitors can enter the treasure hall as well as the hondo (main hall). Within the treasure hall, Buddhist statues as well of precious Buddhist scrolls are displayed. From the hondo, visitors can view the temple’s well maintained garden.

Admission: Free (grounds), 400 yen (treasure hall and hondo)
Visitors may wish to visit the Makino Botanical Garden near Chikurinji. Named after Dr Makino Tomitaro, visitors can enjoy the outdoors park, greenhouse, and walkways, this garden holds. There are several museum halls on the property where visitors can learn about Dr Makino and his research.

Wisata Jepang: Keindahan langit berbintang di gunung Godaisan, Kochi, Shikoku
Didalam Kota Kochi di Shikoku terdapat Gunung Godaisan, terkenal akan pemandangan kotanya. Sekelompok pengunjung biksu Cina menamakannya gunung Godaisan yang menyerupai gunung di Cina.
Dan di Gunung Godaisan terdapat Kuil Chikurinji, Nomer 31 pada Map Peziarah Shikoku. Pengunjung yang tertarik dalam budaya serta pelatihanajaran Buddha haruslah mengunjungi Kuil Chikurinji. Kuil ini ditemukan oleh sekelompok biksu Cina yang menamai gunung ini.
Di dalam halaman kuil, pengunjung akan menyebrangi berbagai ruangan dan bangunan yang indah. Pagoda lantai 5 pada pekarangan kuil sangat indah. Selain itu, dengan sedikit biaya, pengunjung bisa masuk ruangan penyimpanan barang berharga serta hondo (ruang utama). Di dalam ruang penyimpanan barang berharga dipajang patung Budha dan gulungan yang berisi ajaran-ajaran Budha yang sangat berharga. Dari ruang Hondo, pengunjung bisa melihat pemandangan di taman kuil yang tertata rapi dan cantik.

Ada beberapa ruang museum di bangunan ini dimana pengunjung dapat belajar tentang Dr Makino dan penelitiannya.

Ishiteji Temple (石手寺) located in Matsuyama City, Shikoku, is a popular destination for pilgrims who visit the many Buddhist temples located on this island. Ishiteji Temple is number 51 on the Shikoku Pilgrimage Map and the most famous temple in Matsuyama.
According to legend, an aristocrat held onto a stone very tightly on deathbed seeking the priest Kobo Daishi. Though he was unable to receive a visit from priest Kobo Daishi, when the aristocrat was reincarnated, the stone was in his infantile hand. Thus the name Ishiteji (ishi=stone; te=hand; ji=temple) was also born.
Ishiteji temple is a very unique and special temple. From the statue of Kobo Daishi, an important figure in Japanese Buddhism, standing above the temple, to the Niomon Gate, a designated National Treasure, there are many cultural sites within the temple. The temple’s main hall and three-storied pagoda are also designated Important Cultural Properties. In addition, there is an inner temple which is connected to the main grounds by a cave.
Visitors will see the typical Kamakura Period architectural style within the structures in Ishiteji Temple. Though this temple has various statues and historical objects, statues and religious objects are periodically added to its collection. Visitors are able to see some of the temple’s most important artifacts in the treasure house.

Behind the main hall, visitors can walk through a dimly lit 200 meter long cave. Within the cave, visitors will find many Buddhist statures, carvings and drawing. After passing through the cave, visitors need to cross the street to the inner temple grounds. Here there is a large, golden-dome hall. Visitors will find the inner grounds to have a different atmosphere than the main grounds. There are various statues, carving and drawing here as well. There are scenes of the historical Buddha Shaka just before he has gained enlightened.

1. From JR Matsuyama Station, take tram line 5 to Dogo Onsen Tram Stop (journey is about 20 minutes with a fare of 160 yen).
OR
From Matsuyama-shi Station, take tram line 3 to Dogo Onsen Tram Stop (journey is about 15 minutes with a fare of 160 yen).
2. From Dogo Onsen Tram Stop, a 5 minutes bus ride. There are many departures to Ishiteji Temple from Dogo Onsen and the fare is 160 yen.
OR
A 15 to 20 minute walk from Dogo Onsen to Ishiteji Temple.

The Iya Valley (祖谷渓谷 Iya Keikoku) region in Tokushima Prefecture, Japan is a scenic area known for its dramatic mountain valleys and old vine bridges. The Iya Valley and the inner parts of Shikoku have historically been remote and difficult to enter, making them a favorite retreat for refugees and defeated Heike warriors although access has improved in recent years.
Iya Onsen Hotel
The Iya Onsen Hotel is located high up on the steep slope overlooking the Iya Valley. A notable point in the hotel is that its outdoor hot baths located along the river and you have to take a cable car some 170 meters below the hotel itself.
The bath water is a lukewarm 39 degrees Celsius.
Daytime Hours: 7:00 to 18:00 (Last entry at 17:00)
Daytime Admission: 1500 yen (including outdoor bath, indoor bath, and cable car)
Overnight Stay: from 12,000 yen per person including 2 meals
Level of English: Good English website is available.

The Iya Valley is usually divided into two areas. Nishi Iya (West Iya) located around the entrance to the valley and is slightly more developed and more accessible as there are relatively frequent buses to some of the major attractions. Oku Iya (Inner Iya, also called Higashi Iya or East Iya) lies further back into the valley so is difficult to reach without a rental car or other means of private transportation.

A rental car is recommended to visit the area.
1. To Nishi Iya (West Iya)
*From Awa Ikeda Station to Kubo, take a bus and transfer to another bus bound for Nijukazurabashi or Mount Tsurugi. Get off at the Nijukazurabashi bus stop.
The one way journey will take 2 hours with a cost of 1790 yen. There are only 4 buses a day. Moreover buses from Kubo to the bridge operate only on weekends and holidays from April to November.
2. To Oku Iya (Inner Iya)
Rental car stores are available around Oboke and Awa Ikeda Stations.
A rental car is recommended, particularly for visiting the less traveled Oku Iya area. Note: The roads are very narrow and have frequent blind curves, which make driving both hazardous and slow.
