Podgorica Airport
________________
Podgorica Airport is an international airport serving the Montenegrin capital of Podgorica and the surrounding region. It is one of two international airports in Montenegro, the other being Tivat Airport. Both are operated by the state-owned company Airports of Montenegro.
The airport is situated 11 km (6.8 mi) south of central Podgorica, in the Zeta Plain, one of the few flat areas of Montenegro suitable for a large airport. The airport is locally known as Golubovci Airport, as it is located within the administrative boundaries of the town of Golubovci. The IATA code of the airport is still TGD because Podgorica was named Titograd from 1946 to 1992, during which time the airport opened. It is the main hub for Montenegro Airlines and Di Air.
History
_______
The history of civil aviation in Podgorica began on May 26, 1928, when an Aeroput Potez 29/2 landed on a grass runway at a small airfield located near the city's current train station. The plane was on an experimental Belgrade-Skopje-Podgorica-Mostar-Sarajevo-Belgrade line, organized to determine the viability of linking Belgrade with southern Yugoslavia by air. On May 5, 1930, scheduled passenger service began on a Belgrade-Sarajevo-Podgorica line. Aeroput used Farman F.300 aircraft on this line.
World War II brought an end to passenger traffic at the airfield. In 1943 and 1944, the airfield was used by the Luftwaffe in then German-occupied Montenegro. It was a frequent target in the now infamous bombing of Podgorica, which resulted in significant German losses.
After the war, passenger service resumed on April 8, 1947, with newly formed JAT flights to Belgrade on a Douglas C-47 converted for passenger use. A cargo line to Belgrade was later established in 1957.
The airport was moved to its present location south of the city in 1961. It featured a 2,500 m × 45 m (8,202 ft × 148 ft) asphalt runway and was modernized and refurbished in 1977. The majority of traffic in this period consisted of scheduled flights to Belgrade, mostly with McDonnell Douglas DC-9 aircraft. Špiro Mugoša Airport now occupies the former site.
The airport was a frequent target during the 1999 NATO bombing, when numerous Podgorica Airbase facilities and underground fuel tanks were destroyed. Despite this, no significant damage was inflicted on the passenger terminal, taxiways, or runway.
On April 23, 2003 the ownership of the airport was transferred from JAT Airways to Airports of Montenegro, a public company owned by the Government of Montenegro. Along with the formation and growth of Montenegro Airlines, this contributed to an increase in services from the airport. The decades-long practice of the airport being largely a feeder airport for Belgrade was dropped in favor of a more diverse network of scheduled passenger flights.
A major renovation and expansion took place in 2006, with refurbishment and extension of the apron and improvements to the taxiways system, airfield lighting system, and power supply. An entirely new passenger terminal was opened on May 14, 2006, while the old passenger terminal underwent reconstruction and refurbishment in 2009. Airports Council International awarded Podgorica the best airport under 1 million passengers in 2007.
The improved taxiway system allowed for wide-body aircraft to be serviced at the airport. Thus, the airport began servicing Il-86s and first the Boeing 747 freighter arrived at the airport in April 2008.
Podgorica is the capital and largest city of Montenegro.
Between 1946 and 1992 – in the period that Montenegro formed, as the Socialist Republic of Montenegro, part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY) – the city was known as Titograd in honour of Josip Broz Tito.
Podgorica's favourable position at the confluence of the Ribnica and Morača rivers and at the meeting-point of the fertile Zeta Plain and Bjelopavlići Valley has encouraged settlement. The city is close to winter skiing centres in the north and to seaside resorts on the Adriatic Sea.
Podgorica Municipality covers 10.4% of Montenegro's territory and is home to 29.9% of the country's population. It is the nation's administrative centre and its economic, cultural, and educational focus.

Montenegro: All pro-Serb opposition lawmakers detained over church property law clash

At least 22 Montenegrin lawmakers, including all 17 members of the pro-Serb Democratic Front (DF) party, were detained in parliament in the country's capital of Podgorica on Friday as they tried to prevent a vote on a contested law on religious rights, which was subsequently adopted.
Footage shows MPs arguing before the pro-Serb lawmakers are escorted out by security personnel. The opposition members are said to have thrown what looked like a tear gas canister and tried to tamper with microphones. Authorities quickly released all but three MPs who were held on suspicion of attempting to prevent the parliamentary speaker from carrying out his duty.
The new law would transfer most religious property to the state and demands a registry of all religious objects and sites. Ownership can only be retained if the religious communities can produce ownership evidence from before Montenegro lost its independence by joining a Serb-led Balkan kingdom in 1918.
The law has been accused of discriminating against the Serbian Orthodox church and prompted fear in its community of losing their property.

The internet is sadly becoming more and more toxic/negative, and when it comes to Bosnia and Herzegovina, the level of extreme racist, ethnic, nationalistic and other purely cruel comments has been really upsetting.

Montenegro Express, Belgrade to Bar, July 2016
One of the great railway journeys of the world! Through Serbia into the Bosnia Highlands and then onwards Montenegro, descending the magnificent Moraca Canyon to capital Podgorica, before crossing serene Lake Skadar and a 6km tunnel to the Adriatic Coast at Sutomore, Bar.
This was the culmination of a Friday drinking challenge: pick somewhere random in Europe and go there tomorrow. This was my desperately needed escape from the meltdown of post-Brexit Britain, and reconnection to European life & perspective: my #2Fingers2Brexit #Eurorail tour.
'Randomator' generated Bar, in Montenegro, which I'd never heard of, so fitted the bill perfectly :-) To work out how to get there, I consulted the fantastic website seat61.com (highly recommended) which tells you how to travel by train to anywhere in the world - right down to timetables and tips for saving on fares.
Highly recommend this journey!

Tour of Ostrog Monastery, Montenegro ☦ Serbian-Orthodox Religion in the Balkans
Miraculously carved in a cliff face 900m above the Zeta valley, Ostrog Monastery is the most important site in Montenegro for Orthodox Christians.
Ostrog Monastery is dedicated to Saint Basil of Ostrog (Sveti Vasilije Ostroški), who was buried here.
A monastery of the Serbian Orthodox Church, it is carved into Ostroška Greda, in Montenegro. A breathtaking view of the Bjelopavlići plain can be seen from the top, so visiting Ostrog Monastery can be a delight from both a religious and scenery perspective.
The monastery is located in Danilovgrad Municipality, 50 km from Podgorica and 15 km from the town of Nikšić.
The Ostrog Monastery is the most popular pilgrimage place in Montenegro, and one of the most popular pilgrimage sites in the Balkans.
Each year, the monastery attracts up to 1 million visitors, with people of several different faiths, including Orthodox, Catholics, and Muslims, visiting from all parts of the world.
According to the stories of Serbian Orthodox believers and pilgrims, it is believed that praying by Saint Basil's body, many have been cured and received miracles.
