Myeong Dong: A South Korea Tourist Attraction
Travel to South Korea and explore the captivating neighborhood of Myeong Dong.
Tucked in the city of Seoul, this Korean destination belongs at the top of your vacation itinerary. If you’re looking for retail therapy, you’ve come to the right place, as this hot spot is known as one of the city’s main shopping districts. Besides browsing the shops, you’ll also find various must-visit attractions, such as theaters and cultural centers. Meanwhile, if you’re visiting during spring or fall, don’t miss the highly anticipated Myeongdong Festival, which occurs twice a year.
Put on your walking shoes and get ready to shop until you drop. For starters, M Plaza is the place to find international brands of clothing sure to help you reach that globetrotting style you’re going for. Looking to score some beauty secrets from the Koreans? Myeong Dong is home to countless beauty stores, where you can pick up cosmetics at much cheaper prices than other areas of Asia, such as Singapore. In addition to the fashion and skincare shops, you’ll find street vendors selling everything from fish cakes to souvenirs. After a day spent romping around the shopping district, we have a feeling you’ll leave with your hands full.
In addition to shopping, you’ll come across various other South Korea tourist attractions. For a little drama, head to the Myeongdong Theater. Opened in 2009, the theater has lead the cultural charge in this part of town, showcasing all kinds of performances, from non-verbal productions to musicals. The theater even hosts acting contests and festivals. In the mood for some more theater? Check out the plays and concerts at Haechi Hall at the Seoul Global Cultural Center.
If you’re visiting during the bi-annual Myeongdong Festival, you’re in luck! These events provide the ultimate look at Korean culture, as they present a multi-day program filled to the brim. The streets come alive with dance contests, parades, fashion shows, and more. Marvel at the costumes, cheer on the cultural performances, and jam out at the K-POP concerts.
Whether you’re joining informational Myeong Dong tours or planning to explore the neighborhood as you please, you’re in for a treat. For more insight on what to expect on your next romp in Myeong Dong, check out our travel guide video and start packing your bags!

The Cathedral Church of the Virgin Mary of the Immaculate Conception (Latin: Ecclesia Cathedralis Nostrae Domina de Immaculatæ Conceptionis) (Hangul: 천주교 서울대교구 주교좌 명동대성당) informally known as Myeongdong Cathedral is the national cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Seoul. Located in the Myeongdong neighborhood of Jung-gu, Seoul, South Korea, it is the seat of the Archbishop of Seoul Cardinal Andrew Yeom Soo-jung, the highest Roman Catholic prelate of the nation.
Dedicated to Blessed Virgin Mary, the Immaculate Conception is the principal Patroness of Korea by a Pontifical decree accorded by Pope Gregory XVI in 1841. The cathedral serves as a community landmark, tourist attraction, and a notable symbol of Roman Catholicism in Korea. The Korean government assigned the cathedral as a historic site (No. # 258) on 22 November 1977, making it a cultural property and asset of the country.

It covers 0.99km² with a population of 3,409 and is mostly a commercial area, being one of Seoul's main shopping, parade route and tourism districts.[1] In 2011, 2012 and 2013, Myeong-dong was listed as the ninth most expensive shopping street in the world.[2][3][4] The area is known for its two historically significant sites, namely the Myeongdong Cathedral and the Myeongdong Nanta Theatre.
Myeongdong is one of Seoul's main shopping districts featuring mid-to-high priced retail stores and international brand outlets, including Lacoste, Polo Ralph Lauren, H&M, Zara, Forever 21, Bulgari and Louis Vuitton, as well as Korean cosmetics brands such as Nature Republic, Missha, The Face Shop and Skin Food.[12] It is a particularly popular area for young people and tourists as a center for fashion and sight-seeing.[1] Several large shopping centers and department stores are in the district including Lotte Department Store, Shinsegae Department Store, Migliore, M Plaza, and Noon Square.[13]
In August 2012, as part of Lotte Department Store's expansion programme into China, a replica of the street of Myeongdong is featured in its new store in Tianjin, with outlets of Missha, The Face Shop and Skin Food.[14]
The floating population of Myeongdong is estimated to be around 2 million a day[15] and in terms of floorspace rents, Myeongdong is one of the most expensive shopping districts in the world.[16] Many hotels, restaurants, cinemas, theaters, and historical sites complete the diverse mixture of the area. In a poll of nearly 2,000 foreign visitors, conducted by the Seoul Metropolitan Government in November 2011, stated that 13.4 percent named shopping in Myeongdong as their favorite activity in Seoul.

Shopping in Myeongdong (명동) Seoul, Korea with Nanta Performance | Life in Korea
After visiting the traditional Namdaemun market we quickly turned our attention to nearby Myeongdong which is one of the most popular shopping districts on the North side of Seoul. Only just a short walk from one another it's quite fascinating going from such a traditional Korean market to one that is very modern and trendy. Typically, the area is frequented mostly by young Korean adults but it is also very popular with tourists and expat foreigners. It's the kind of place trendy young Koreans go for people watching, street food and fine dining.

One of the main draws, aside from shopping are the various cultural performances that often take place. We were treated to a Nanta theater performance that showcased a talented group performing culinary theatrics. With expert precision the performers wielded their knives in a very skillful manner dicing, slicing and chopping anything that was on the table. I loved how animated all them looked performing their routines with such charisma and smiles plastered on their faces.
After being mesmerized by the free performance we then wandered around looking for shoes and boots. I was lucky enough to find a pair of red running shoes that were literally the nicest pair I've ever owned; thanks to Audrey for buying me such a nice early birthday present. Feeling tired from our activities for the day, one of the highlights was sharing a giant ice cream soft serve cone. It was the biggest one either of us had ever tried. Other highlights included sampling more street food and jostling with the crowds. This video is from our Life in Korea series:
Here were are in Myeongdong probably the most popular shopping district in all of Seoul. It is more of an upscale place. It is sort of a market type environment where everything is stores and upscale boutiques, clothing shops and expensive restaurants. Swanky this and swanky that.
Come join me for a walk in Myeong Dong.
Look at what we got here. Nice! Is it big enough? Take a bit of that. Take a look at this. I think it is big enough to share. Is that the biggest ice cream you've ever had? Yeah, that is really good.
And here in Myeongdong a little girl having her caricature drawn.
We have Louis Vitton and of course that is a store I can afford.
One of my favorite stores in the world is massive here in Seoul - Forever 21 and we are looking here for boots.

The department stores carry many premium labels and other fashionable goods at reasonable prices.
Myeong-dong also has family restaurants, fast food, plus Korean, Western and Japanese dining options. Many restaurants in Myeong-dong specialize in dongaseu (pork cutlet) and kalguksu (noodle soup). Other businesses in the area include hair salons, banks and theaters.
