Great Smoky Mountains National Park officials reported fire activity at the Park Headquarters area and a spot fire between Elkmont and Newfound Gap Road off of the Sugarland Mountain Trail approximately 1 mile south of the Husky Gap Trail intersection. The park has closed the Gatlinburg Bypass and Little River Road from Sugarlands Visitor Center to Metcalf Bottoms Picnic Area due to fire activity and downed trees. The park has evacuated employees from the Elkmont and Park Headquarters housing areas. The southbound lanes of the Spur from Pigeon Forge to Gatlinburg are also closed due to fire activity. It's very dangerous weather conditions, said Dana Soehn with the National Park Service. We've had trees coming down, limbs coming down and the fire is continuing to grow. Evacuation centers were set up at the Gatlinburg Community Center and Rocky Top Sports World. Fire officials report that fallen trees have sparked multiple fires from fallen power lines, said Cindy Ogle, city manager for the city of Gatlinburg. Fire agencies from multiple agencies are responding to the area fires and I can't express enough the city's gratitude for the assistant with the National Park.

Gatlinburg, a mountain town in eastern Tennessee, is known as a gateway to the roughly 520,000-acre Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Many of its key attractions offer sweeping views of the neighboring park, including the 407-ft. Space Needle observation tower and the Sky Lift, a 2.1-mile aerial cable car that journeys from Downtown to the popular amusement park and ski resort Ober Gatlinburg.
Gatlinburg is a resort town located in eastern Tennessee. It is a gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Downtown Gatlinburg may come as somewhat of a shock for those on their way to a nature getaway in the national park - from the Space Needle to the amusement rides, the town hasn't necessarily chosen to embrace its nature side. That said, there is plenty of lodging, restaurants, and other amenities to make this town a useful base for exploring the park.
The town's development is closely tied to that of the national park, which was opened in 1934. While in 1912 the town had only six houses, by 1935 over 500,000 visitors were passing through the town each year, and today over 9 million people each year visit the park. The town grew quickly to accommodate the influx, but has had to deal with issues of urban sprawl and air quality as a result of the huge numbers of outsiders that pass through.
Gatlinburg is best reached by the north by taking I-40 to TN 66 SOUTH. Follow TN 66 to US 441 in Sevierville and follow US 441 through Pigeon Forge and into Gatlinburg. Gatlinburg offers a trolley that takes tourists around the town without fighting the traffic. There are several park-and-ride locations: the Gatlinburg Visitor Center has free parking and access to the purple route; the Gatlingburg Mass Transit Center (located behind the Ripley's Aquarium) offers pay parking and access to all trolley routes. The Gatlinburg By-Pass allows traffic heading into the National Park from the north to bypass the Gatlinburg business district. There are scenic vistas along this road as well. Gatlinburg Parking lets travelers reserve parking spaces online and park in various lots throughout the city.

Southern 154: Christmas in the Marble City (Three Rivers Rambler 2019)
The end of 2019 would once again find 129-year-old former Southern Railway 154 at the head of the annual Christmas Lantern Express trains operated by the Three Rivers Rambler in Knoxville, Tennessee. I chased at least one run from all four Saturdays that 154 operated, and she was as nice a sight as ever steaming up the Tennessee River three times each day. Nothing says Christmas in Knoxville like the sound of a steam whistle echoing across the downtown riverfront. The engine also put on one great show each trip climbing the grade to the trestle at the end of the run; the sold-out trains had the old 2-8-0 and her diesel helper really working.
I wish a Merry Christmas to all who watch this video, to Stevewivibeevy, Dossett Yard Productions, The 'Nooga Railfan, and everyone else I met trackside while chasing, and to the men & women of Gulf & Ohio Railways who make this possible every year.
And a Merry Christmas to Stevewivibeevy, Dossett Yard Productions, The 'Nooga Railfan, and everyone else I met trackside while chasing.
