Places to see in ( Moelfre - UK )
Places to see in ( Moelfre - UK )
Moelfre is a village, community and electoral ward on the north east coast of Isle of Anglesey in Wales, and on the Anglesey Coastal Path. It has a population of 1,064 as of the 2011 UK census. The meaning of the Welsh language word Moelfre translated in English is 'bald or barren hill', which describes the land behind the village, as seen from the sea. It is the same name as that of the Malvern Hills in Worcestershire and Herefordshire. The village today has 502 households and 5% unemployment. The Royal Mail postcode begins LL72.
The village of Moelfre is 5 minutes from the A5025. The nearest mainline railway stations are in Bangor and Llanfairpwllgwyngyll. These can be reached in under half an hour on the bus services which run through the village.
It was the site of the wreck in 1859 of the steam clipper The Royal Charter near the end of its voyage from Australia to Liverpool. On July 30th, 1862, the screw sloop Enrica, soon to be commissioned as the Confederate States of America warship CSS Alabama sheltered in Moelfre Bay while evading both British customs authorities and the USS Tuscarora, which had been sent to capture or sink her. There were no street lights in the village until well after the Second World War. Moelfre RNLI Lifeboat Station has a distinguished history, including the Hindlea rescue in 1959, when all the crew were rescued. There has been a lifeboat in Moelfre since 1854.
This area is by the large sandy beach Traeth Lligwy and the ancient stone homestead of Din Lligwy. Nearby Ynys Moelfre is a haven for birds, and seals and porpoises may also be seen. In the village there is a bakery, restaurants and a fish and chip shop, and the RNLI Gwylfan Moelfre Seawatch Centre has a small museum, shop and book store. The RNLI Lifeboat Station is open to the public.
Actress Jennifer Ellison was rescued by the RNLI in August 2013. off Moelfre.

Places to see in ( Island of Anglesey - UK )
Places to see in ( Island of Anglesey - UK )
Anglesey is an island in Wales, off the mainland's northwest coast. It's known for its beaches and ancient sites. The island is accessed by the 19th-century Menai Suspension Bridge and the Britannia Bridge, rebuilt in the 20th century. In the medieval town of Beaumaris, 13th-century Beaumaris Castle has concentric fortifications and a moat. Beaumaris Gaol has Victorian punishment cells and an original tread wheel.
Anglesey is an island off the north-west coast of Wales. With an area of 276 square miles (715 km2), Anglesey is by far the largest island in Wales and the seventh largest in the British Isles. Anglesey is also the largest island in the Irish Sea by area, and the second most populous island (after the Isle of Man). Two bridges span the Menai Strait, connecting the island to the mainland: the Menai Suspension Bridge, designed by Thomas Telford in 1826, and the Britannia Bridge. A historic county of Wales and later administrated as part of Gwynedd, Anglesey today makes up the Isle of Anglesey County along with Holy Island and other smaller islands. The majority of Anglesey's inhabitants are Welsh speakers and Ynys Môn, the Welsh name for the island, is used for the UK Parliament and National Assembly constituencies.
Anglesey is a relatively low-lying island, with low hills spaced evenly over the north of the island. The highest six are: Holyhead Mountain (220 metres (720 ft)); Mynydd Bodafon (178 metres (584 ft)); Mynydd Llaneilian (177 metres (581 ft)); Mynydd y Garn (170 metres (560 ft)); Bwrdd Arthur (164 metres (538 ft)) and Mynydd Llwydiarth (158 metres (518 ft)). To the south/south-east the island is separated from the Welsh mainland by the Menai Strait, which at its narrowest point is about 250 metres (270 yd) wide. In all other directions the island is surrounded by the Irish Sea. It is the 51st largest island in Europe.
There are several small towns scattered around the island, making it quite evenly populated. The largest towns are Holyhead, Llangefni, Benllech, Menai Bridge, and Amlwch. Beaumaris (Welsh: Biwmares), in the east of the island, features Beaumaris Castle, built by Edward I as part of his Bastide Town campaign in North Wales. Beaumaris is a yachting centre, with many boats moored in the bay or off Gallows Point. The village of Newborough (Welsh: Niwbwrch), in the south, created when the townsfolk of Llanfaes were relocated to make way for the building of Beaumaris Castle, includes the site of Llys Rhosyr, another of the courts of the medieval Welsh princes, which features one of the oldest courtrooms in the United Kingdom.
There are a few natural lakes, mostly in the west, such as Llyn Llywenan, the largest natural lake on the island, Llyn Coron, and Cors Cerrig y Daran, but rivers are few and small. There are two large water supply reservoirs operated by Welsh Water. These are Llyn Alaw to the north of the island and Llyn Cefni in the centre of the island, which is fed by the headwaters of the afon Cefni.

North Wales walks from our dog friendly cottage in Anglesey
Some of the best walks on Anglesey can be found on the coast path. All the paths are dog friendly although you may wish to put your dog on a lead by the cliffs. We have a cottage on Anglesey, see Southstackcottage.co.uk that is dog friendly so we can often be found walking in the area.
Please note the pictures in the video are not all on the coast path.
South Stack cottage (Y Fron) is situated on the coast path so provides easy access for details please see:
To do the walk in full can take anything up to a fortnight, but you can also enjoy the walk in small sections. The terrain will test even serious walkers and is coastal heath,
dunes, farmland, salt-marsh and cliffs. The Path is never more than 720 feet above sea-level.
St Cybi's Church in Holyhead is the main start point, although as it's a circular route you can start wherever you like. 95% of the Path runs through Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
So expect to see birdlife. Lots of it: guillemots, razorbills, puffins, terns and cormorants.
Look out also for dolphins and other marine life such as seals and purpoises too. There are great views from Holyhead Mountain which is Anglesey's highest point, all the way over to Snowdonia or the mainland.
For more information on Anglesey see:
There is a white sea arch carved into a cliff by the wild waters of Rhoscolyn. Four working lighthouses can be seen and a real medieval castle at Beaumaris which is also a World Heritage Site. And big sandy beaches which don't come much bigger or sandier than Newborough Beach and
Red Wharf Bay where you can get the sand between your toes. Or catch the surf from the beach at Rhosneigr. And after all that exertion you'll probably need to make use of one of our seaside pubs.
