Myrtle Beach Colored School
Opened in 1932 during segregation, the original Myrtle Beach Colored School fostered the education of many African Americans in the area for over 20 years. After falling into disrepair, the building was reconstructed at 900 Dunbar Street to serve the community as a museum and education center. This historic and treasured site continues to offer a glimpse into the past for the Myrtle Beach area and its residents.

Know Your Zone Signs in Horry County
Description
Conway, South Carolina – The Horry County Emergency Management Department will enhance its Know Your Zone campaign initiative by adding evacuation zone signs throughout respective areas of the County.
The signs will be added to existing Horry County street signs in evacuation zone areas, located within unincorporated areas of Horry County.
The signs indicate evacuation zones A, B and C by color with red representing Zone A, the color yellow representing Zone B and the color orange representing Zone C. The indicators measure approximately 9 inches by 9 inches.
The multi-year project will involve distribution of the evacuation zone signs in phases. The first phase will focus on transition sections between evacuation zone areas.
Following Hurricane Matthew, Horry County residents requested clarification of evacuation zone areas. The fixed signage will indicate evacuation zone areas for citizens who reside and work in the respective sections.
Evacuation Zone A: All areas east of U.S. Business 17 (Kings Highway), up to U.S. 17 intersection and all areas east of U.S. 17 to the Northern county line.
Evacuation Zone B: All areas south of Highway 707 and Longwood Drive, including all areas in Longwood Plantation (Blackmoor) to the Waccamaw River and all areas between Highway 17 and Highway 17 Business.
Evacuation Zone C: All areas between Highway 701 and Highway 544, south of Browns Chapel Avenue and Highway 814, plus all areas east of Highway 31 (Carolina Bays Parkway) to Highway 90 and all areas east of Highway 90 to the county line.
Know Your Zone is a public education campaign to inform the citizens and visitors of Horry County of the hurricane evacuation zones and the vulnerability to storm surge.
The Know Your Zone campaign was developed as a result of the information contained in the South Carolina Hurricane Evacuation Study (HES) for the Northern Conglomerate that was released by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) in 2012. The campaign also reflects the National Hurricane Center’s (NHC) decision to separate the association of storm surge inundation from the category of storm.
For information on evacuation, reentry, storm preparation and more, visit Horry County Emergency Management online at emd.horrycounty.org.

1. Mississippi -
Mississippi is in the United States, located between Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennesee, Alabama, and the Gulf of Mexico. It was founded in 1817 by the US congress. Some activities they take part in are the St. Paul's Seafood Festival, visiting the State Historical Museum, attending Mardi Gras Festivals, the Miss Mississippi Beauty pageant, and soo much more. They Beaty Pageant, which is our first challenge to start the show was chosen because beaty pageants are popular in the south.
2. Chihuahua -
With the dry climate of Mexico, and the location of Chihuahua, it's perfect for irrigation and farming. Some things they farm include potatoes, wheat, and cotton. They also have a large mining center in chihuahua, which excavates gold, silver, copper, etc. Chihuahua has a unique blend of Spanish, Indian, and American residents and traditions.
3. Deadwood-
Deadwood is located in South Dakota, in a canyon in the Black Hills. Their economy is mostly comprived of the tourism, the western theme, and the Black Hills National Forest. In the past, it was notorious as a frontier of voilence, with theives and outlaws firing all over the darn place.
4. Myrtle Beach -
Myrtle Beach is located in South Carolina and is famous for their big seaside resorts. Some activities included at the resorts are tennis, golf, and swimming. However, the 1990's is when country music and culture began to settle in along with amusement parks which, combined, made Myrtle Beach a big tourist attraction.
5. Atlantic City -
Atlantic City is one of the biggest seaside resorts in the world, and one of two communities in the U.S. where gambling is legal. There are over ten casinos in the city and a large boardwalk that stretches for two miles. Atlantic City is in New Jersey, on an absecon island off the coast. Since gambling is big there, it only makes sense to gamble in our challenge here.
6. New Mexico -
New Mexico is in the United States, located between Arizona, Colorado, and Texas. New Mexicois called the Land of Enchantment, because of its scinic beauty and rich history. We chose to do the cattle ropping because its a part of thier western entertainment.
7. Bolivia -
Bolivia is a country in Central South America. It's terrain is quite diverse, ranging from snowcapped mountainhs, rain forrests, and even swampland! It's terrain isn't the only thing that's diverse though, Bolivia's ancestry is too, for there are both Spanish and Indian people, divided into several more ethnic groups. On top of that, Bolivia's economy is divided into three main portions: Agriculture, manufacturing, and mining. Bolivia's culture is fascinating too, do to the fact that it's traditions and customs are both Indian and Iberian, brought by the Spaniards. Some common traditions they celebrate with delicious foods, bright rainbow colored clothing, and a lot of singing and dancing. Bolivia really is a unique country.

New Georgetown Emergency Center
As the northeast deals with the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, Georgetown County Emergency Management begins operating a super high-tech room lined with ten large flat video monitors and projection screens. Designed to improve safety and responsiveness, officials said they hope it will never have to be used for its ultimate purpose. A larger-than-expected crowd got a glimpse of Georgetown County's central command and control facility on Thur., Nov. 15, when the county hosted a dedication ceremony for its newly expanded Emergency Operations Center (EOC) on Highmarket Street--site of the Georgetown County Emergency Services administration building. Sam Hodge, Georgetown County Emergency manager, said the 3,200-square-foot addition allows the nerve center to have sufficient space to house municipal, state, federal partners, along with county personnel, who may be on duty around the clock. The former EOC was limited to about 720 sq. ft. EOC visitors on Thursday saw work tables all over the coordination room. Chairs were covered with colored vests, which were labeled with bold lettering showing a person's job during a response or recovery effort. A red vest said Volunteers Group Supervisor. County officials say planning for the addition started about two years ago. Funds totaling $828,000 for the building and equipment were allocated through the Capital Improvement Plan. This is the third EOC for the county. The first was upstairs in a Broad Street building now being converted into a new Georgetown County Museum location. EOC was there until 2003, when it moved to Highmarket. County Administrator Sel Hemingway welcomed guests, emergency representatives from Horry,Marion,Dorchester and Orangeburg counties. He talked about Hurricane Sandy's recovery under way. Despite the best efforts of all us and all our brothers and sisters across the country for this endeavor, we fight a losing battle, Hemingway said. There will be losses and we can only do the best we can to minimize them. County Council Chairman Johnny Morant says the construction project was a tremendous task and he was grateful for the work conducted by all. It was built with 200 yards of concrete to safe-room standards, Morant says. And is rated to withstand 150 MPH winds from hurricanes and tornados. Electric service is backed-up by a 220 KW emergency generator, and 30,000 feet of data cabling went into the facility. He announces the unveiling of a dedication plaque, joining with Georgetown City Council Members Paige Sawyer and Peggy Wayne, Georgetown County Council Members Ron Charlton, Bob Anderson and Austin Beard, and City of Georgetown Mayor Jack Scoville. Mercom of Pawleys Island installed a video streaming camera on the ceiling, video teleconferencing (VTC), video links to schools and video cameras to the outside of the building, because it has no windows. The county's internet technology staff assisted. There are local, county, state and national news feeds coming in through connections from Southern Coastal Cable and Time Warner, Hodge said. The space the EOC previously occupied will be used to expand the county's disaster call center. Coastal Structures of Georgetown was the general contractor and architects were Tych and Walker, LLP. Mercom recently announced a new plant on Pawleys Island with hiring expected for its business of designing and installing such information technology systems as now operated by Georgetown County.
Students name egret after principal-join tracking study of great birds | UNC-TV Science
Students help with a groundbreaking tracking program for herons and egrets, and name their bird after Dr. Adrienne Palma, the Principal at Nags Head Elementary.
For more information: or
Dr. Adrienne Palma is the Principal at Nags Head Elementary. She has worked with the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh to build an outdoor environmental science lab and jumped at the chance to help with the egret-tracking project. The project is a joint effort between the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and Reese Institute for Conservation of Natural Resources at Lenoir-Rhyne University. John Brzorad, professor at Lenoir-Rhyne, explains that an egret, named after Ms. Palma, is tracked with a radio transmitter device, similar to a GPS and a cell phone. Data from her daily and yearly activity will give scientists and students information about how she is adapting to modern landscape. Watch as researchers discover how Ms.Palma is adapting to modern landscape.

Cherokee, NC Vlog
Hey guess so last weekend my mother and I decided to make a day trip out to Cherokee, NC for an outdoor drama. This was a totally spontaneous trip that sadly ended up getting cut short because we weren't able to find a hotel room for the night. So I'll definitely be adventuring back out to the western side of the state to see some waterfalls! I hope you enjoy this video. If you do please like and subscribe!

Newcastle Kitchen and Bedroom Company | Spring Launch Event
Newcastle Kitchen and Bedroom Company | Spring Launch Event - Here Come The Hoopers
Newcastle Kitchen and Bedroom Company were hosting a Spring Launch Event on 17th March. Their 7,000 Square foot showroom played host to AEG with Live Cooking Demonstrations. Showing the latest cooking appliances, such as induction Hobs and Steam Cookers and AEG Sous Vide cooking.
NKBCo had their partnered businesses on hand too. This was a great chance to chat with Fleur Interiors, who are the team that have added all soft furnishings and decorations to the Kitchens and Bedrooms. Wakefield Smarter Homes, who specialise in home automation and connectivity are also Bang and Olufsen experts.
It is hard to not be impressed with the displays and offers at this event. We are particularly impressed with the floating kitchen.
AEG's expert chef was on hand throughout the day cooking small bites from canapes to chocolate tray bakes and muffins. While Zapatista provided the Mexican flavoured buffet.

Since its founding in 1920, the Harvard Graduate School of Education has been training leaders to transform education in the United States and around the globe. Today, our faculty, students, and alumni are studying and solving the most critical challenges facing education: student assessment, the achievement gap, urban education, and teacher shortages, to name just a few. Our work is shaping how people teach, learn, and lead in schools and colleges as well as in after-school programs, high-tech companies, and international organizations. The HGSE community is pushing the frontiers of education, and the effects of our entrepreneurship are improving the world.
