Most Haunted Places In Kolkata | Haunted places calcutta | Horror places in kolkata | kolkata bhoot
Haunted Places In Kolkata & Real Ghost Stories - Ghosts, spirits and paranormal activities are something that some people believe, and some don’t. But one thing that is sure about it is that you cannot just ignore it. From the time a child can understand, he knows what “Bhoot” is! Kolkata is the cultural capital of the country, but as you look deep in it, you can discover the haunted secrets of the city. Kolkata is home to many ancient buildings and some of them are home to ghosts and spirits! The city is also considered to be a hub of tantra and black magic. Sounds interesting, right? Do you have a chill down your spine or do you get excited from the horror tales? Are you a horror movie buff? Are you among those who go to see every horror film in the theater just to get the extra thrill?
If you are one of them, who finds adventure in spookiness, then you must surely visit these haunted places once you are in Kolkata.
1. National Library, Alipore – A Haunting in Kolkata!
People reading alone in the library have felt the presence of someone breathing down their neck; this is what people say about The National Library in Kolkata. This happens even more when they do not keep a book in place from where they took it from. It is also said that sounds of footsteps are heard near them. Apart from being the largest library in India, this spookiness in this library makes it one of the most haunted places in Kolkata. There are many stories which connect to these supernatural events taking place. Some believe that it is the ghost of the wife of Lord Metcalfe who keeps roaming in the halls. The librarians working there have also complained that they have felt their chairs being drawn away, books being dropped down and pages rifled. If ghosts who enjoy a good laugh and good books could easily be your favourite kind of ghosts, consider visiting this mysterious library!
Another eerie secret of this place opened when a mysterious room was discovered in this 250 year old building that nobody knew about. Nobody could even enter the room as there was no opening, not even trapdoors. There have been so many supernatural activities in the library that one would not even find a guard during night shift. Who wants to risk his life, right? If you wish to feel the spookiness, this place is a must visit!
2. Under the Howrah Bridge – Top Haunted Places in Kolkata
There is a spot just under the Howrah Bridge which is near the Mullick Ghat flower market which is believed to be center for various paranormal activities in Kolkata. The wrestlers who practice in that area on a daily basis claim that they see flailing hands in the river and they are not sure whether those hands are of human beings or some spirits playing tricks with them. People believe that there are the spirits of those people who lost their life in the Ganges- either by committing suicide or by drowning. Some people also recall the incident of witnessing a lady in white, sobbing and calling their name in a nasal tone which lure them into a state of trauma or to their deaths. You try to save the apparitions, you might end up losing your life!
3. Nimtala Shamshaan Ghat
The Nimtala Burning Ghat is one of the oldest burning ghats in Kolkata and is also considered to be one of the most haunted places in Kolkata. It is believed that on the night of the Kali Puja, the aghoris come to the ghat for their various rites and to invoke the Shamshaan Kali, who is believed to be their reigning deity. The locals believe that the name must not be said out loud. They feed on the left over flesh of the burnt bodies and use this ritual to generate occult powers in themselves. These occult rites and gory sacrifices have rendered the Nimtala Burning Ghat
4. Writer’s Building
No one works here after sunset! You ask why? The most powerful building of Kolkata is also one of the most haunted places in Kolkata. The Writer’s Building used to house the secretariat building of the state government of West Bengal. The empty rooms in this 300 year old building have some hidden secrets. Story has it that this building has been haunted for many decades and the caretakers staying here could not continue their job for more than one month. This was the place where famous revolutionaries Binay, Badal and Dinesh killed Captain Simpson of the East India Company. The large rooms in the building are said to be inhabited by the ghosts and someone’s shrieks are heard late at night even though the building is deserted after 7 pm.
20th June 1756: British prisoners locked in the 'Black Hole of Calcutta'
The East India Company had built Fort William to guard their trading base at Calcutta at a time when the provincial governors of the Mogul empire, known as nawabs, wielded significant power. The Nawab of Bengal, Siraj-ud-daula, was concerned that the Company had begun to strengthen the fort in response to French interests in the area. Fearing that a stronger fortress would undermine his own political power in the province, he ordered the work to stop. When the British refused to comply he sent an army of a reported 50,000 soldiers, 500 elephants and 50 cannon to lay siege to the fortress.
The nawab’s army met very little resistance as it advanced through Calcutta towards the fort, so the majority of British residents fled to the ships in the harbour. A small garrison remained in the fort under the command of John Zephaniah Holwell, an inexperienced military commander whose primary role was as a tax collector.
Unable to defend the fortress, Holwell was forced to surrender on the afternoon of 20 June. He later reported that at 8pm 146 people were imprisoned in the fort’s tiny 4.30m. × 5.50m lock-up, of whom only 23 survived the night due to heat exhaustion and suffocation.
Reports of the incident prompted a mixture of British anger and patriotism, and led to a violent retaliation by Robert Clive the following year.
It is now known that Holwell’s figures were exaggerated, but a comprehensive study of the incident undertaken by Professor Brijen Gupta in the late 1950s concluded that of the lower number of around 64 prisoners, only 21 came out alive the next morning.
Christmas Cake Mixing Ceremony | Christmas season special | Plum cake | Masquerade By Mystery Rooms
Cake mixing is one of the most awaited traditional rituals of Christian households and hotels or cafes that marks the onset Christmas season. Apart from the fact that mixing dry fruits ahead of time brings richness to the cake.
Masquerade By Mystery Rooms
We are sure that you've heard of Mystery Rooms and if you've ever wanted to grab snacks after a mind boggling game, here's a surprise. Masquerade is Mystery Rooms' first cafe in India where you can play games, grab a milkshake, or tuck into a proper meal. For those of you who love board games, you can team up with your squad and play it old style. With plenty of video games or VR games, a limited but good collection of books, your entire day is sorted here. Even if you are all by yourself, you can lounge around.
As you enter, you're welcomed by an armour. Take a tour around — you'll find how well the cafe is designed in yellows, blues, and greens. Decked with masks and elements like toy robots, motorcycles, we cannot tell you how Instagram worthy this place is. Plus, the Mystery Rooms are done up with vintage British design, and you take a flight of stairs to play these games.

Kolkata, India, was the first city I visited when I went to India, and after traveling throughout the northern part of the country, Kolkata was one of my favorite cities. It sure is huge and chaotic as you would expect, yet at the same time it's such a fascinating city full of life, culture, and lots of delicious food. Now let's get right into these top 11 things to do in Kolkata, India.
1. Mother Teresa Home - The first thing on the list is the Mother Teresa home which in Kolkata is just known as Mother's Home. It's the location where Mother Teresa lived, worked, and influenced many many people. At the small Catholic mission you can go inside, see Mother's tomb where she's buried and also see the room where she spent much of her time writing and thinking. There's also a small little museum where you can see some of her possessions.
2. Victoria Memorial Hall - Second on the list of top things to do in Kolkata (Calcutta) is the Victoria Memorial Hall which happens to be one of the most important landmarks in the entire city. The outside of the hall, which is built in Victorian style, is surrounded by nice gardens where you can walk around. The entrance to the park is just 4 Rupees. If you choose to go to the inside, the cost is 150 Rupees and you can get into the museum.
3. South Park Street Cemetery - One of the spookiest attractions in Kolkata (Calcutta), is the South Park Street Cemetery, a dark garden that's full of huge tombs. The cemetery is free to enter, though they'll ask your for a donation when you either enter or exit.
4. Khalighat Kali Temple - Dedicated to the Hindu Goddess of Kali, is the most famous and sacred Hindu Temple in Kolkata (Calcutta). The temple is nearly always busy and in order to enter you've got to take off your shoes. Surrounding the temple is a busy market. Be careful when you visit the Kalighat Temple, there are many scams and people people that will ask for donations.
5. New Market - Next on this video list of Kolkata attractions is the New Market, sort of the center of the city with lots of energy. The New Market has an indoor section where you can shop for everything from clothes to electronics, but in my opinion, it's the outdoors area surrounding the market that's the most interesting. Here you'll find food, clothes, fruit, spices, and just about everything else you can possibly imagine. You can also have the opportunity to take a Kolkata human powered rickshaw in this area.
6. Indian Museum - Coming in next is the Indian Museum in Kolkata, one of the original museums in all of India. It's a huge museum and the highlight of the many exhibitions is the Egyptian mummy and numerous other valuable collections. The museum is also known as the Magic House.
7. Belur Math - Located north of the main part of the city is Belur Math, a private temple that's located along the banks of the Hooghly River. The temple is quiet and relaxing, and because they don't allow any videos or photos, I had to take the video from near the gate where they didn't have security.
8. Dakshineswar Kali Temple - Across and upstream the river from Belur Math is the huge Dakshineswar Kali Temple, one of the most famous Hindu temples in Kolkata. It's north of Kolkata, but it's worth a trip there to see the crowds and to see people bathing in the river.
9. Mullik Ghat Flower Market - Next up is the center flower market of Kolkata. The market, which is located below the Howrah Bridge, is just a fascinating sight of moving colorful flowers.
10. Terreti Market - Occupying Sun Yat Sen road, is the early morning Chinese food market which is known as Terreti Bazar. It makes a perfect place to get a morning breakfast of Chinese food when you're in town.
11. Kolkata Street Food - Last but not least for things to do in Kolkata is eat street food. There's a lot to eat and it's mouthwatering good!

What Really Goes On At Mother Teresa's Mission In India? (2001)
Shaming Mother Teresa (2001): Despite Mother Teresa's canonisation, allegations of child abuse as well as questions about the allocation of donations plague the Calcutta Missionaries of Charity order.

“I've seen smacking, yanking around babies by their arms, letting their heads wobble”, says a volunteer. Mother Teresa’s successor, Sister Nirmala, defended the mission but admitted she has no idea how much money it has. “Nobody knows, it’s God’s maths.” Critics argue that funds were going to religious campaigns rather than poverty relief.

Kolkata Travel Vlog | Visit India Travel Guides
Join us as we visit Kolkata in this travel vlog covering as much as we in the city as our final destination on our India trip. After a long train ride from Varanasi we finally arrived in Calcutta with less than 48 hours to visit the city. The health of our group as a whole had really deteriorated at this point with Audrey and my Mom being really sick and my Dad struggling with a cold.
On our first morning it was just my Dad and I wandering from Colootola east of the maiden along Garer Maath and Elliot Park en route to visit Victoria Memorial. Along the way we spotted numerous cricket matches which we stopped to watch for a bit. By the end of that it was quite hot and humid so we took a yellow taxicab back to our hotel on Sudder street.
The following day, after my parents left to return home to Canada, Audrey and I ventured nearby to the Sir Hogg Stuart Market which honestly was a bust given the hassle factor. Instead we decided to enjoy some rooftop sunset views of Kolkata before ending our last evening by doing a pulled rickshaw tour of Calcutta at night.

Our visit Kolkata travel guide documentary covers some of the top attractions including a city tour, visiting museums and memorials, shopping at markets, pulled rickshaw rides and rooftop views during sunset. We also cover off-the-beaten-path activities you won't find in a typical Kolkata tourism brochure, Kolkata city tour or Kolkata itinerary.
Kolkata Travel Vlog | Visit India Travel Guides video transcript:
Good morning from Kolkata. We have made it to our final destination in India. Sam is going to show you around Calcutta with his Dad.
We didn’t venture too far on our first day. Our hotel was located in Colootola just east of the maidan, so we mostly wandered the park on foot & watched a bit of cricket, before heading down to Victoria Memorial.
So the one thing you'll notice if you're touring around Kolkata just on foot is just how popular cricket is here in this city. It is just everywhere you go, anytime there is a park or an open space you'll see a bunch of men playing cricket.
So next up we're visiting Victoria Memorial Hall and to visit the garden it is like the cost of a cup of chai on a train in India. It is only 10 Rupees. If you want to go visit the museum it is 200 but we're uh a little tired today so we're just going to walk around the premises and take some shots.
The Victoria Memorial was built to commemorate Queen Victoria after her passing, and it officially opened in 1921. Inside they have a collection of Indian paintings and Western paintings, as well as rare photographs, old manuscripts and coin collections.
Today is our last day in Kolkata. We just said goodbye to Sam's parents this morning. We're flying out tomorrow. So we're going to do some sightseeing. It is almost sunset time so we're thinking of doing a rickshaw tour around part of the city.
We went out for a little walk around our neighbourhood. We found some street art, took photos of the iconic yellow cabs, watched a game of cricket on the street, and then befriended a sweet dog.
Visiting the Sir Stuart Hogg Market was a bust. We were surrounded by a group of people who just wanted to sell us stuff and take us to their shops.
We are doing a tour by pull rickshaw because apparently these are typical of Kolkata. This is what you do in Kolkata.
That is a wrap from Kolkata. We are all packed up and ready to go. That is the end of our journey in India and what a journey it was. Oh my gosh like yeah. It has been a crazy month. It has been a rollercoaster ride of highs & lows and we'll be talking more in a travel tips video.
This is part of our Travel in India video series showcasing Indian food, Indian culture and Indian cuisine.

Netaji Bose mystery: 64 files, 12,744 pages de-classified in Kolkata
The West Bengal police today de-classified 64 files containing 12,744 pages relating to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. The files were handed over to the family members and would be available for public viewing from Monday onwards.
The Kolkata Police Commissioner Surajit Kar Purkayastha said that the files were in digitized format and will be available at the Kolkata Police Museum for the public from Monday onwards. At the programme where the files were de-classified, members of Netaji's family were present.
The family members would now go through the files. There is a lot of expectation that the files would reveal details about the mystery surrounding Netaji Bose. The files are voluminous and may take sometime before a clarity on the same emerges.
