Mystery Valley - Monument Valley - Anasazi Ruins (Navajo for the Ancient Ones) Petroglyphs & more
Mystery Valley is a section of Monument Valley that is only accessible by visitors who have a Navajo guide. This is probably for the best because there are several sensitive archeological sites, several Navajo families whose homes are in the area and do not want to be disturbed, and perhaps most importantly, the roads are very poor with deep sand and no signage at all. It would be very easy to get lost here. Though there are a few tour providers for Mystery Valley, it is not that popular with tourists because it requires walking and a bit of rock scrambling to get to the best sights. It is likely you won't encounter other visitors on your tour of Mystery Valley.
Aside from solitude, Mystery Valley holds a large number of very well preserved Anasazi (Navajo for the Ancient Ones) ruins and artifacts, plus it has stunning scenery and views of Monument Valley in the distance. The Navajo arrived in the Four Corners area about 500 years ago, hundreds of years after the Anasazi had abandoned their cliff dwellings and moved south. Navajo people do not have a lot of reverence for the abandoned pueblos, but rather regard them with a bit of superstition. The tours of Mystery Valley generally include a lot of context about the Navajo way of looking at the world and their way of life. The guides on these tours tend to be older and more willing to discuss their personal stories than the average Monument Valley tour.
Geologists believe that the now sun-dried valley was completely underwater long ago. The remarkable formations are the work of millions of years of slow erosion by wind and water. Mystery Valley, along with much of the American southwest, was once home to the Ancestral Puebloan people (from roughly 100 B.C.E. to 1300 C.E.) Around 500 years ago—after the Ancestral Puebloans departed from the area, leaving empty settlements and everyday items behind—the Diné (Navajo) tribe descended from northwestern Canada and settled in Mystery Valley and much of the surrounding territory. To this day, Mystery Valley belongs to the Diné and is under their tribal law, and is accessible to visitors only when accompanied by a Diné guide.
While exploring Mystery Valley, one cannot help but feel the immense amount of time that has shaped it. It is a cosmic place of strange red rock formations that, but for a scattering of desert plants, often resembles a Martian landscape. Exploring the ancient ruins of Ancestral Puebloan settlements, and gazing at petroglyphs that look like they could have been scratched into the sandstone yesterday, you can hear the echo of the ancient people who once called this valley home.

Monument Valley, Arizona-Utah, United States, North America
Monument Valley (Navajo: Tsé Biiʼ Ndzisgaii, meaning valley of the rocks) is a region of the Colorado Plateau characterized by a cluster of vast sandstone buttes, the largest reaching 1,000 ft (300 m) above the valley floor. It is located on the Arizona-Utah state line (around 36°59′N 110°6′WCoordinates: 36°59′N 110°6′W), near the Four Corners area. The valley lies within the range of the Navajo Nation Reservation and is accessible from U.S. Highway 163. Monument Valley has been featured in many forms of media since the 1930s. Director John Ford used the location for a number of his best-known films, and thus, in the words of critic Keith Phipps, its five square miles have defined what decades of moviegoers think of when they imagine the American West. The area is part of the Colorado Plateau. The elevation of the valley floor ranges from 5,000 to 6,000 feet (1,500 to 1,800 m) above sea level. The floor is largely siltstone of the Cutler Group, or sand derived from it, deposited by the meandering rivers that carved the valley. The valley's vivid red color comes from iron oxide exposed in the weathered siltstone. The darker, blue-gray rocks in the valley get their color from manganese oxide. The buttes are clearly stratified, with three principal layers. The lowest layer is the Organ Rock Shale, the middle is de Chelly Sandstone, and the top layer is the Moenkopi Formation capped by Shinarump Conglomerate. The valley includes large stone structures including the famed Eye of the Sun. Between 1945 and 1967, the southern extent of the Monument Upwarp was mined for uranium, which occurs in scattered areas of the Shinarump Conglomerate; vanadium and copper are associated with uranium in some deposits. Monument Valley is officially a large area that includes much of the area surrounding Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, a Navajo Nation equivalent to a national park. Oljato, for example, is also within the area designated as Monument Valley. Visitors may pay an access fee and drive through the park on a 17-mile (27 km) dirt road (a 2-3 hour trip). Parts of Monument Valley, such as Mystery Valley and Hunts Mesa, are accessible only by guided tour. Monument Valley experiences a desert climate with cold winters and hot summers. While the summers may be hot, the heat is tempered by region's aridity and high altitude. Although the valley experiences an average of 54 days above 90 °F (32 °C) annually, summer highs rarely exceed 100 °F (38 °C). Summer nights are comfortably cool, and temperatures drop quickly after sunset. Winters are cold, but daytime highs are usually above freezing. Even in the winter, temperatures below 0 °F (−18 °C) are uncommon, though possible. Monument Valley receives an occasional light snowfall in the winter; however, it usually melts within a day or two.

Swirling Sands of Mystery Valley
The road into this valley is a sandy cut through the desert. The wind rapidly turns it into sand dunes, navigated at times by picking up enough speed in the tour truck to 'slide' thru the quicksand piles. Lone Pine Butte is shown above an arch on the high sandstone butte. Voice is that of a Navajo guide.
Nevada's Mysterious Devil's Hole: Center of Terrifying Stories and Legends?
Nevada's Devils Hole has been the source of controversy for years. Over the years many conspiracy theories have surfaced revolving around what lies beneath the waters of Devil's Hole.
Death Valley is a National Park in North America known for being the driest and hottest place on the continent. Over one million people travel here annually to visit the Park and enjoy the amazing sights Death Valley has to offer but Death Valley is home to more than just amazing sights. Death Valley is also home to strange features surrounded by terrifying stories and legends.
Nevada's Devil’s Hole has captured the curiosity of many for centuries. The earliest writings of this strange anomaly date back all the way to when the Paiute Indians inhabited Ash Meadows. To put that into perspective, The Paiute Indians began to occupy the Ash Meadows area over 9,000 years ago. During their time here, the Paiute wrote warning tales about Devil’s Hole depicting creatures known as “Water Babies”. These Warning Tales described a creature who would surface and swallow swimmers if they swam in the warm waters for too long. Other tales suggested that a evil giant lived in the mountain springs and caves and would come down and eat unsuspecting victims right from the shore of devils hole.
Ancient Paiute Legend describes Devil’s Hole as being a portal to the a sacred city beneath Death Valley called Shinauav, meaning Ghost Land. One legend surrounding the small pool describes a maiden who fell into the hole and was immediately drug underwater. Day’s later the maiden re-appeared next to a nearby stream. It is believed by some that the maiden was drug to the underworld city and held there for days before being released.
In the late 1960’s, Charles Manson begun a commune that would later be known as “The Manson Family”. Manson convinced his followers that he was re-embodiment of Jesus Christ and that they were the original Christians.
During the Manson Family reign of terror, they would be involved in several high profile crimes including the gruesome murder of pregnant actress Sharon Tate and four others in her home on August 9,1969 as well as the attempted assassination of United States President Gerald Ford in Sacramento.
Manson took interest in finding Devil’s Hole after hearing an old Paiute legend that described a portal in Death Valley that led to underworld city in which the rivers ran upside down. He hoped that he would be able to find the entrance or portal to this underworld city in order to protect his “family” during the on coming race war he was predicting. He hoped that by finding the portal to this underworld his family would be able to live in peace and have all their needs provided for.
In 1965, four friends, 19 y/o Paul Giancontieri,, a cafeteria worker at the Nevada Test Site, his 20 y/o Brother in Law David Rose, who worked for one of the Las Vegas Casinos, along 19 year old Bill, and his younger brother Jack Alter, set out to go scuba dive inside the warm waters of Devil’s Hole. Equipped with very little gear, the four hiked up the steep barren hillside overlooking a ranch in the vast Desert landscape. Once finished climbing the hillside the group then had to follow a rocky trail that led straight to Devil’s Hole. Once the boys arrived, they quickly began scramble underneath the fence and then race down the 30 foot rocky descent to reach the dark, murky waters of Devil’s Hole. After suiting up with Scuba Tanks,Snorkel Masks, and dive lights the boys begun their dive into the deep, ominous waters of Devil’s Hole
Jack Alter, Bill’s little brother, decided to remain at the surface, just in case anything went wrong. A little past Midnight, David and Bill resurfaced from the dive. After waiting for a while for Paul, they begun to worry when he had still not re surfaced. The boys decided to wait for a little longer for their friend, but still there was no sight of Paul, so David and Bill made the fateful decision to dive back down into the dark depths of Devil’s Hole to try and find their lost friend. Bill followed David down as they descended 175 feet through the dark, eerie waters in hopes of finding their friend. As the water got darker and deeper however the boys were separated from one another. This time, only one diver would resurface. Bill and Jack Alter would be the only two to walk away from Devils Hole that Night.

5. The Devil’s Tower
Devil’s tower, that soars 900 feet in the sky is National Monument is located in the state of Wyoming. This landmark is considered to be sacred to the Lakota Tribe and other small tribes in this area. The Lakota however have the strongest spiritual connection with this place. They refer to it by several different names including “ghost mountain” “Grizzly Bear’s Lodge” and “Mythical Owl Mountain”. It’s here where they often conducted spiritual rituals such as fasting, praying, and shaman would performing healing ceremonies. One tale tells that a fierce warrior was undergoing a vision and suddenly appeared at the top of this mountain. He was frightened and felt that there was no possible way to come down without losing his life. Here in this photo, we see the chief of the Lakota Nation, who goes by the Chief Arvol. Him and his people have requested that the name of the mountain be changed to the “Bears Lodge”. He claims that the name is very misleading, There’s nothing evil about it and it’s a place where his people have prayed for years.
4. Mauna Kea
Mauna Kea is the highest peak in the state of hawaii, reaching nearly 14,000 feet and the native Hawaiians find this place to be a sacred place. From the peak of this massive dormant volcano, amazing views of the cosmos can be seen due to the darkness of the ocean surrounding it. For this reason, it’s also sought after by astronomers who wanted to build a massive telescope to peer into the final frontier. Native hawaiians protested the construction of the Mauna kea telescope on this sacred volcano. They claim that it’s from here where spirits of the supreme beings, divine entities live and the meeting place for the god of the sky and mother earth. It’s also believed to be a holy burial ground. Many people protested the construction of the telescope and in 2015, native hawaiians held a large gathering to block entrance to it and were arrested by authorities.
3. The Grand Canyon
This location is often on travellers to-do list while visiting the Southwestern United States. Many tourists however, might not know right away that these remarkably beautiful canyons are sacred to Native American tribes. In the surrounding area, tribes like the Navajo, Havasupai, Hopi and Paiute Tribes have all settled in this area, well before tours to the white man were available and before gift shops began selling replica jewlery. Many tribes have deeply imbedded history in the grand canyon and there are several Indian reservation here. The water that flows through the canyon is considered to be sacred to them, and the Havasupai Indians get their name from this. Havasupai translates to “people of the green and blue waters. Other stone structures nearby like Wigleeva we see here, overlooks the havasupai village, are believed to guard the tribe, and if they fall, it will mean the end of their civilization.
2. Navajo Mountain
Located in Southwest Utah, in the monument valley, this is the highest peak in the Navajo Nation reserve and considered to be the area of the first ever Navajo settlement. It plays a huge role in Navajo culture and is the setting of their mythical legends. Evidence of other people such as the Anasazi have also been discovered and the Navajo also believe it’s haunted by spirits of this tribe. The southwest of the united states can get quite dry at times, and they believe tha0t this mountain plays a vital role in bring rain and freshwater to their people.
1.The Black Hills
Possibly one of the most disputed pieces of land within the United States are the Black Hills. Other areas in North and South Dakota are the original homeland for the Lakota Native Americans. According the them, the Black Hills are “the heart of Everything that is”. As the American settlers continued westward with the concept of Manifest Destiny, it became a casualty in vicious conquest of land. Thousands of buffalo that once roamed this area, with purposely slaughtered to extinguish the food source of this tribe, like we see here with this pyramid of Buffalo skulls. The black mountains are still a location of political unrest and confrontations in modern times. Many Lakota believe that this is a unique place where they are able to make spiritual connections with their creators. It’s also their the location of the Bears Lodge we mentioned eariler. The Lakota take a large amount of pride in their heritage and even recently there’s been civil unrest when tribe members feared the government building a oil pipeline through burial grounds and sacred land near the black hills.
