Tibet (June 2017) Chapter 1 - Xining
We started our journey to mystical Tibet in June 2017 by flying to Lanzhou via Kunming, before taking a 3 hour coach ride to the city of Xining where we were based for the next 2 days. This itinerary was to enable us to slowly get acclimatised to the high altitude in Lhasa of more than 3500m. Xining is at 2275m. Flying direct to Lhasa runs the risk of suffering from altitude sickness which can ruin your trip real quick. Being in Xining we also get to take the scenic Qinghai Lhasa railway.

Discover Asia's Spiritual Heart in Tibet
The region of Tibet has become a byword for spirituality, with Buddhism reflected in nearly every aspect of its art and culture. Centuries-old monasteries still ring with the early morning chants of monks and prayer flags flap in the wind against a background of majestic peaks and blue skies.
Lhasa is the cultural heart of Tibet, and many of the most spectacular sites you see in the region with Abercrombie & Kent are here, including Potala Palace, the traditional home of the Dalai Lama. Beyond the massive seventeenth-century structure that houses more than 1,000 rooms and 10,000 shrines, visit Sanggye Dhungu, where hundreds of Buddha statues are carved into a cliff wall. With A&K, get under the skin of Tibet's deeply spiritual and ancient culture by bearing witness to monks raucously debating over Buddhism at the Sera Monastery and meeting the nuns of Ani Tsankhung Nunnery.
A journey to Tibet with A&K is an eye-opening experience in a region little visited by the ordinary traveller. Discover its heart and soul on a journey to the Roof of the World.

Lhasa, Tibet China
Lhasa is the of Tibet China and the second most populous city on the Tibetan Plateau, after Xining. At an altitude of 3,490 meters (11,450 ft), Lhasa is one of the highest cities in the world. It contains many culturally significant Tibetan Buddhist sites such as the Jokhang, Potala and Norbulingka palaces.
The Barkhor is an area of narrow streets and a public square located around Jokhang Temple in Lhasa, Tibet. The Barkor is a popular devotional circumabulation for pilgrims and locals. The walk was about one kilometre long and encircled the entire Jokhang. The Tromzikhang market is busy in Barkhor, and the area is a major tourist attraction.
The Jokhang Temple is located on Barkhor Square in Lhasa. For most Tibetans it is the most sacred and important temple in Tibet. It is in some regards pan-sectarian, but is presently controlled by the Gelug school. The temple's architectural style is a mixture of Indian vihara design, Chinese Tang Dynasty design, and Nepalese design.
The Potala Palace was named after Mount Potala, the abode of Chenresig or Avalokitesvara. The Potala Palace was the chief residence of the Dalai Lama until the 14th Dalai Lama self-exile in 1959. The first palace was built in 637 by the Tibetan king, Songtsen Gampo, as a present for his bride Princess Wen Cheng of the Tang Dynasty. The construction of the modern Potala Palace in 1645 after one of his spiritual advisers, Konchog Chophel (d. 1646), pointed out that the site was ideal as a seat of government, situated as it is between Drepung and Sera monasteries and the old city of Lhasa. Today, the Potala Palace is a museum.
Norbulingka is a palace and surrounding park in Lhasa, Tibet, built from 1755 by the 7th Dalai Lama and it is a unique representation of Tibetan palace architecture. It served as the traditional summer residence of the successive Dalai Lamas from the 1780s up until the 14th Dalai Lama's self-exile in 1959. Part of the Historic Ensemble of the Potala Palace, Norbulingka is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and was added as an extension of this Historic Ensemble in 2001.

Watch as we explore Nangchen from the air in some of the world's first drone footage of this remote Tibetan area.
Along the way, get ready for craggy mountains, colorful monasteries, and a bumpy ride! Almost all of the roads outside of Nangchen town are dirt and are still quite rugged. Driving even 30km here may take 3 hours on these untamed backroads that meander along the Mekong River. But a little bit of whiplash is a small price to pay for the grandeur of these mountains that once protected the epic Kingdom of Nangchen. After centuries of remote isolation, Nangchen still sees very few tourists and those who make it out there are either really lost or don't mind driving 15 hours from the province's capital for some of the most beautiful and wild terrain in all of the Tibetan Plateau.
Nangqên County is a place that is as diverse as the many spellings of its name. This place is known both as Nangchen (Tibetan: ནང་ཆེན་རྫོང་།) and as Nangqian County (simplified Chinese: 囊谦县; pinyin: Nángqiān Xiàn), is a county of the Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture and is the southernmost county-level division of Qinghai province, China, bordering the Tibet Autonomous Region to the south. It was one of the five kingdoms of the historical region of Kham.
The county seat is Xangda (Chinese: 香达镇), was built in a side valley and on the right bank of the Dza Chu (upper reaches of the Mekong River). In 2000, the county's population amounted to 57,387 people, inhabiting a surface of 11,539 km2 (4,455 sq mi). Today Nangchen, like many Tibetan towns, is growing and developing quickly as new hotels and paved roads replace the old dirty guesthouses and the potholed, bumpy dirt roads that mark this as a western outpost of civilization before one reaches the border of the Tibet Autonomous Region or TAR.
This video is about Nangchen in southern Qinghai Province.

Story
Situated deep in the Himalayas lies the former sovereign nation Tibet. Also known as The Roof of the World, the geographical location of this spiritual country kept it relatively isolated for centuries conserving a deep-rooted Buddhist culture. This all changed in the beginning of the 20th century. First, Tibet was invaded by the British in 1903, followed by the Chinese self proclaimed liberators in 1949. In the following years The Peoples Republic of China used cunning tactics to try to win over the hearts and minds of the Tibetan government and citizens. When this tactic proved unsuccessful the Chinese Maoists resorted to violence and oppression, forcing the Tibetan spiritual leader, The Dalai Lama, along with many monks, aristocrats and citizens, into exile. The documentary Tibet The Chinese Lie gives an overview of this on-going conflict with eyewitness accounts of Tibetans in exile and archive footage mainly consisting of Chinese propaganda films.
Social Interest
The Peoples Republic of China has always made the world believe that the Chinese presence benefits the 6 million Tibetans. They introduced (socialist) education, built roads and high-rise buildings and started to exploit the natural resources of Tibet undermining the traditional Buddhist way of life. The Tibetans were not allowed to voice their opinion about any of these measures, even though they were slowly stripped of the values most important to them, since religion in communism is considered as Opium for the people. In 1956 things took a turn for the worse when protests broke out and China changed its tactics to a more direct and violent approach leading to decades of loss of identity and destruction of culture and Buddhist artifacts (Cultural Genocide), beside the famine, imprisonment, violence and killings. In the last 10 years the Chinese imperialistic ambitions are finally fully revealed with the creation of the Qingzang-Lhasa railway leading to a mass colonization of Han Chinese in Tibet. Only 1/3 of the population of Lhasa remains Tibetan, and the once so magical and mystical capital, with its breathtaking Norbulingka Palace, has changed into a capitalist town full of Chinese owned shops.
Political & Historical Relevance
In the last 60 years only sporadically news from uprisings in Tibet reach the international media. Especially in the beginning the only imagery the West encountered from Tibet was carefully selected Chinese propaganda. The international community has never condemned the Chinese actions in Tibet openly, partly because of clever tactics used by the Chinese denying the fact that Tibet ever was a sovereign nation. For example: They even forced (read blackmailed) the Dalai Lama to officially deny Tibets claims of sovereignty. Nowadays Tibet is more easily accessible because of the Qingzang-Lhasa railway, the highest in the world. And even though more impartial journalism about Tibet is reaching the West the international community remains silent still. The current lack of international attention for the Tibet issue may be explained by the position of China on the Global Financial Market. Criticism on the Chinese annexation of Tibet may well result in economic sanctions or losses for nations that oppose the Imperialist ambitions of China.

The Journey To Tibet 西游记
44 hours of Qinghai–Tibet railway train ride, covers approximately 3,070 km, reaching the altitude of 3,650m, we finally reach the mystic land of Tibet. The journey began at Lhasa - Yamdrot Lake - Shigatse - Lhatse - Tingri - Everest Base Camp - Namtso.
TIBET: the Old city and Monasteries of LHASA
Lhasa is rightly one of the most dreamt-about cities in the world. This is not only because of its high altitude at 3,650 meters (11,975 feet) which means remoteness and limited accessibility, but also because of its over 1,000 years' cultural and spiritual history which leaves an impressive heritage that has helped to create the romantic and mysterious Tibetan religion.
In the Tibetan language, Lhasa means the Holy Land or the Buddha Land.
This video report offers you images of our visit to Lhasa. Images of the Potala Palace and the bazaar in Barkhor Street. In Barkhor the pilgrims walk in large rounds around the most important temple of Tibetan Buddhism: the Jokhang Temple.
Some Pilgrims repeatedly fall to the ground (prostration, literally pulling down, on-earth-repudiation) while muttering mantras. Prostration is very popular and common in Tibet. It is a movement to worship to the Buddha.
We visited the Drepung Monastery and the Sera Monastery. Drepung Monastery is one of the six largest temples of the Gelug Sect of Tibetan Buddhism. The white buildings of Drepung Monastery scatter on the slope of the mountain. Sera Monastery, one of the renowned Tibetan Buddhist temples of the Gelug Sect (Yellow Hat) with it's Debate Garden.
