Mystras ???????? Greece Travel Guide - Travel & Discover
In 1249, Mystras became the seat of the Latin Principality of Achaea, established in 1205 after the conquest of Constantinople during the Fourth Crusade, and Prince William II Villehardouin, a grand-nephew of the Fourth Crusade historian Geoffrey of Villehardouin, built a palace there. Mystras, Sparta, Peloponnese - Greece HD Travel Channel
Mystras - Μυστράς, the former Byzantine town, lies on the Peloponnese, Greece, directly besides Sparta.
The fortress was founded in 1249 by Frankish Crusaders, but already in 1259 it was taken by Byzantine troops. Below the castle, the town developed rapidly in the following years to a Byzantine cultural center, inhabited by about 30,000 people. Most were from the nearby Sparta, because the town was not easy to defended.
Highlighted in the town which leads in spirals down into the valley, is the despot palace which will be restored in recent times. It was the most representative buildings of the Byzantine Empire outside of Constantinople.
One of the monasteries is still inhabited today. The sacred buildings with its well-preserved frescoes and the philosophy as a center of the culture, consolidated the reputation of Mystras far beyond the Peloponnese. In 1770, the Albanian mercenaries Ottomans already devastated the city but in 1825, during the Greek War of Independence, it was destroyed so strongly that a reconstruction seemed no longer sensible. The inhabitants relocated again in the newly constructed Sparta. Since 1989, Mystras belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The region of Sparta has been inhabited already for 4000 years. King Otto of Greece founded modern Sparta in 1836. He was the first Greek king after independence. It is impossible to miss the monument of Leonidas, whom we will meet again at the Thermopylae. His heroic fight represents the military strength of ancient Sparta.
Sparta was the only Greek Polis that had no defensive walls until the Hellenistic period, as the city's troops were strong enough to fend off an attack.
Nearby a monument commemorates all the great Greek Olympic champions since the beginning of the Games.
On the former Acropolis, we see only a few remains of the ancient city like the ruins of a Stoa and a theater from the Roman Empire.
Sparta always polarized the people. Here one trained the young men to unconditional fight. On the other hand, one can find the first state order with separation of powers here; the great Rhetra, a document on Greek constitutional history that institutionalized political processes.
The Acropolis offers a beautiful view of the Byzantine fortified city of Mystras. The construction of Mystras led to the desolation of ancient Sparta.

1836 gründete König Otto I. das moderne Sparta.

Mystras Castle, Sparta Peloponnese: top attractions | best of Greece, the land of myths
Mystras or Mistras is a fortified town in Laconia, Peloponnese, Greece. Situated on Mt. Taygetos, near ancient Sparta, it served as the capital of the Byzantine Despotate of the Morea in the 14th and 15th centuries, experiencing a period of prosperity and cultural flowering. The site remained inhabited throughout the Ottoman period, when it was mistaken by Western travellers for ancient Sparta. In the 1830s, it was abandoned and the new town of Sparti was built, approximately eight kilometres to the east.
The last Byzantine emperor, Constantine XI Palaiologos, was despot at Mystras before he came to the throne. Demetrius Palaeologus the last despot of Morea, surrendered the city to the Ottoman emperor Mehmed II in 1460. It was abandoned under King Otto for the newly rebuilt town of Sparta. In 1989 the ruins, including the fortress, palace, churches, and monasteries, were named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Mystras, the 'wonder of the Morea', was built as an amphitheatre around the fortress erected in 1249 by the prince of Achaia, William of Villehardouin. Reconquered by the Byzantines, then occupied by the Turks and the Venetians, the city was abandoned in 1832, leaving only the breathtaking medieval ruins, standing in a beautiful landscape.
Outstanding Universal Value
Mystras, the ‘wonder of the Morea’, lies in the southeast of the Peloponnese. The town developed down the hillside from the fortress built in 1249 by the prince of Achaia, William II of Villehardouin, at the top of a 620 m high hill overlooking Sparta. The Franks surrendered the castle to the Byzantines in 1262, it was the centre of Byzantine power in southern Greece, first as the base of the military governor and from 1348 as the seat of the Despotate of Morea. Captured by the Turks in 1460, it was occupied thereafter by them and the Venetians. After 1834 the inhabitants of Mystras gradually started to move to the modern town of Sparta leaving only the breath-taking medieval ruins, standing in a beautiful landscape.
Mystras, as the centre of Byzantine power, quickly attracted inhabitants and institutions; the bishopric was transferred there from Sparta, with its cathedral, the Metropolis or church of Hagios Demetrios, built after 1264. Many monasteries were founded there, including those of the Brontochion and the monastery of Christos Zoodotes (Christ the Giver of Life). Under the Despots, Mystras reached its zenith with the building of churches, outstanding examples of Late Byzantine church architecture, such as Hagioi Theodoroi (1290-1295), the Hodegetria (c. 1310), the Hagia Sophia (1350-1365), the Peribleptos (3rd quarter of the 14th century), the Evangelistria (late 14th – early 15th century) and the Pantanassa (c. 1430). The city was a major piece on the political chessboard of the time and was developed and beautified as befitted its role as a centre of power and culture. The city’s complex history is clearly evident in its fortifications, palaces, churches, convents, houses, streets and public squares.

Gorge Drive Route 82 Kalamata To Sparta & Hiking Taygetos Mountains GREECE
Today we’re on a day trip from Kalamata going to Sparta via the gorge road know as Route 82. We’d heard this is an amazing scenic drive with loads of valley views and windy mountain roads, but the reality exceeded our expectations! This was one of the best mountain drives we have ever done!
We made a pit stop at a hillside taverna in Tripi where the views are amazing and the drink portions are generous!
From Sparta there is easy access to hike the Taygetos Mountains, so we used our Bradt guidebook and went on a 2 hour hike starting in the hills above Paroreio and ending back down in Mystras. The trail went past a 14th century cave church, which had beautiful wall frescoes and was a peaceful place to take a break.

SPARTA MYSTRAS GREECE LEONIDAS
GG 1973 Prior to modern times, the site of Sparta was occupied by a relatively small village that lay in the shadow of Mystras, a more important (Byzantine) settlement nearby. In 1834, after the Greek War of Independence, King Otto of Greece decreed that a city was to be built on the site of Sparta and bear its name (pronounced Sparti in Modern Greek). The city was designed with the intention of creating one of the most beautiful cities in Greece through the use of tree-lined boulevards and parklands. At present, Sparta is the administrative capital of the prefecture of Laconia. Sparta is the center of an agricultural plain whose focus is the Eurotas valley. It is the local center for the processing of goods such as citrus and olives.
