????A North Korean Spy Ship
On December 22, 2001, the Japan Coast Guard received reports that a suspicious vessel had been spotted in waters southwest of Kyūshū. Aircraft and patrol ships were dispatched to investigate the intruder, setting off a chase that was shown repeatedly on television news programs over the next few days. A video display at the museum shows Coast Guard vessels chasing the suspicious boat, ordering it to halt, and then firing warning shots across its bow.
????NYK Maritime Museum
This museum presents the history of how ships transferring people, goods, and culture have opened up the sea route from Japan to overseas since the Meiji period. Inside the artistic building which has been used as the Yokohama branch of a shipping company, Nippon Yusen Kaisya (NYK Line), visitors can enjoy videos and a display of a large scale model of a luxury liner of the 1920's. Free tea service is provided in the resting area.

Day trip to Yokohama with a baby - NYK Hikawamaru Ship
Do you feel like escaping from the hot humid weather in Tokyo and heading down south for some fresh sea breeze? Just 45min train ride from the city, you will find the huge NYK Hikawa-maru Ship - a perfect day trip with a baby or kids! The ship is permanently docked at the port next to Yamashita Park, just a short walk from Motomachi-Chukagai Train Station. It is easily one of the most amazing ships I have ever been into - the explanation of the history of the ship was wonderful, and all in perfect English! It was so nice to finally go to an exhibition where I could understand all the signs. Our baby loved it too - he could run around the deck, try steering the wheel, and also got to try on the captain's hat! HIghly recommend visiting this ship for some fun and fresh air!

The Queen of the Pacific Hikawa Maru - Japan History Museum
Hikawa Maru and her sisters ran a regular liner route between Yokohama, Vancouver and Seattle. She had a reputation for service that combined splendid food and beautiful art deco interiors, and she was nicknamed The Queen of the Pacific.
NYK Line underwrote her restoration, which began in August 2007. She was renamed NYK Hikawamaru and was reopened to the public at Yamashita Park on 25 April 2008.

Yokohama has historically been the gateway for ships between Japan and the outside world. Therefore it is natural that several museums in Yokohama are dedicated to the shipping industry.
One of the more spectacular examples is the museum ship Hikawa Maru located next to the Yamashita Park. The Hikawa Maru is an old cruise ship and a rare survivor of WWII. It was launched in 1929 and has sailed between Japan and USA. After the war she sailed again to USA until decommissioned in 1960.
After many years as restaurant and hotel she has now finally been restored to her original state with a new owner (NYK Line) in 2008 and is now a museum ship only, showing how life was on a cruise ship in the good old days.
It was really a rare, spectacular and special experience. If you come to Yokohama see this ship.

Hikawa maru is a cargo-passenger liner that was built in 1930 for the Japan-Seattle line by NYK line.
Around the 1920s, there were growing calls in Japan for building its own high-grade ships in order to compete with the large ships introduced by Europe and the United States. Hikawa maru was a state-of-the-art ship at the time it was built.During World War II, Hikawa maru was set up as a navy hospitals ship. The ship struck mines on the three separate occasions before the war ended but avoided being sunk. After the war. It was refitted as a cargo-passenger ship and resumed service on the Seattle line in 1953. Having been in service for 30 years. Hikawa maru made 254 voyages across the Pacific Ocean and carried more than 25.000 passengers in total during its lifetime. Since 1961, the ship has been kept at Yamashita park, where it has become a popular attraction visited by many people over many years. Hikawa maru was temporarily closed for refurbishing in 2006 and reopened to the public in 2008 as NYK Hikawamaru.Being the only surviving cargo-passenger liner built in Japan before World War II and having earned a high reputation as a valuable industrial heritage that preserves shipbuilding technology and inboard interior decoration, the ship was designated as a nationally important cultural property in 2016.
