Kumano Nachi Taisha is one of the three Kumano shrines, along the pilgrim trail of Kumano Kodo in Wakayama Prefecture. The shrine is located a few kilometers inland from the coastal hot spring resort of Katsuura. The shrine is part of a large complex of neighboring religious sites which should the Buddhist and Shinto influences in the Kumano region. Kumano Nachi Taisha has the tallest waterfall in Japan (Nachi no Otaki).
Kumano Nachi Taisha is located halfway up Nachi Mountain. It religious origin goes back to the ancient nature worship of Nachi-no-Otaki. The shrine is one of the three shrines in the Kumano Sanzan and is an important destination on the Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage Trails.

Nachi-no Otaki is 133 meter high and 13 meters wide. This waterfall is the tallest waterfall in Japan. The water source for this taki (waterfall) is from the surrounding evergreen primeval forest. This forest is the sanctuary of Kumano Nachi Taisha. In the past, this forest was used for training by the mountain monks and has been a protected area since ancient times.
Visitors who are in Wakayama in July are advised to attend the Fire Festival or Nachi no Hi Matsuri Kumano Nachi Shrine hosts. Men dressed in white carry fires from oversized torches to purify a 6 meter tall portable shrine The 6 meter tall shrine symbolize the waterfall.
