EXPLORING GREECE: A tour of historic NAFPLIO (Ναύπλιο), 1st capital of the country (1824)
SUBSCRIBE: - A tour of historic Nafplio (Ναύπλιο), the 1st capital of Greece (1824)! Let's go for a tour of the historic city (and very beautiful) of Nafplio (Ναύπλιο), Greece, the first capital of liberated Greece in the 1820s. Vic Stefanu, vstefanu@yahoo.com. Nafplio (Modern Greek: Ναύπλιο) is a seaport town in the Peloponnese in Greece that has expanded up the hillsides near the north end of the Argolic Gulf. The town was an important seaport held under a succession of royal houses in the Middle Ages as part of the lordship of Argos and Nauplia, held initially by the de la Roche following the Fourth Crusade before coming under the Republic of Venice and, lastly, the Ottoman Empire.
Greece is a country in southeastern Europe with thousands of islands throughout the Aegean and Ionian seas. Influential in ancient times, it's often called the cradle of Western civilization. Athens, its capital, retains landmarks including the 5th-century B.C. Acropolis citadel with the Parthenon temple. Greece is also known for its beaches, from the black sands of Santorini to the party resorts of Mykonos.

Not on a typical tourist map, we decided to visit this rather small town in Greece. What we experienced was a charming old town, full of lovely laneways, cute cafes, a waterfront, a coastal walk and a 999 steps climb to the Palamidi fortress on top of a hill

Nafplio is one of the most beautiful seaport towns in Greece. It's filled with locals and hidden streets that are far from overpopulated tourists that Greece has come to know. This was a travel film I shot from this past summer.

The fortress of Palamidi towers over the city of Nafplio in Greece on a 216 m high rock. The over a long distance visible fortress on the Palamidi hill was built under Venetian rule and is named after the Greek mythical hero Palamedes. Palamidi is one three fortresses in Nafplio, others are the Akronauplia fortress on the castle hill above the old town and the Bourtzi on a little island at the entrance of the port. Palamidi fortress can be reached by a stairway with 999 steps or by car.
Nafplio gained in importance in the Byzantine Empire. The Ottoman power in Nafplio was ended after a one-year siege by Theodors Kolokotronis, a Greek freedom fighter.
Because he behaved very oppositional opposite the Allies and the future king, he was sentenced to death for high treason. Later the verdict was changed to 20 years custody and after the new king came into power, Kolokotronis was granted amnesty. Nevertheless Kolokotronis spent a year in this inhumane cell in the Palamidi fortress, which still can be seen today. He died highly respected in Athens seven years later.
From the Palamidi one has a wonderful view over the city of Nafplio.

One of the most beautiful towns in the area of Argolis (in eastern Peloponnese) as well as one of the most romantic cities all over Greece, Nafplio was the first capital of the newly born Greek state between 1823 and 1834.
According to mythology, the town was founded by Náfplios, the son of god Poseidon and the daughter of Danaus (Danaida) Anymone. The town’s history traces back to the prehistoric era when soldiers from here participated in the Argonautic expedition and the Trojan War alike. The town declined during the Roman times and flourished again during the Byzantine times. Frankish, Venetian and Turkish conquerors left their mark in the town and strongly influenced its culture, architecture and traditions during the centuries. Ancient walls, medieval castles, monuments and statues, Ottoman fountains and Venetian or neoclassical buildings mesmerize the visitor with their unique architecture and beauty.

We started off our grand Greek adventure in the picturesque coastal town of Nafplion. It was the first capital of Greece, after she won her independence from the Ottoman Turks.
We spent Christmas morning walking through the town. It was a little chilly, but the views were breathtaking. Nafplio maintains a traditional architectural style with many colourful buildings, churches, statues and enormous fortifications. We followed a walking tour using the guidebook by Rick Steeves, and got to learn a lot about the history of the city.
Some of the shops were closed as it was a day of celebration, but we could still feel the old-world charm while walking through the narrow streets.
Afterwards, we enjoyed an excellent traditional lunch at a restaurant near the promenade: fresh Greek salad, creamy souvlakis and rich mousakkas. Then it was time for a gentle stroll by the turquoise blue water. This was the highlight of the day: I have hardly seen more beautiful sights! The beach at the end of the walk was not much, and the water was cold, but I really enjoyed dipping my feet in it for a while.
The next day, we drove up to Palamidi fortress. You can hike up too, but as I was accompanied by my parents, we chose the easier and more comfortable option. The fortress was built in 1714, by the Venetians when then had captured the city. As we went quite early in the morning, we could avoid the crowds and enjoy once again, breath-taking views of the sea and the city.
The last highlight of our trip was Karathona beach. We timed our arrival with the day’s sunset, and thus enjoyed a brilliant riot of colours on the sky and the sea. It left nothing else to be desired. I hope to go back someday, maybe during summer so that I can enjoy swimming there.
Thus, we made our way back to the Airbnb, very excited to continue our adventure to the next destination: Monemvasia.
ONE OF THE BEST TOWNS IN GREECE - NAFPLION
One of the most beautiful towns in all of Greece, is Nafplion and the former capital of the country. The seaport town on the Peloponnese peninsula, has wonderful views from its seafront cafes across the Argolic gulf towards the mountains of Arcadia. The pretty romantic town is only two hours drive from Athens, and has a sophisticated medieval atmosphere and enough sights to fill a week.
A walk around the attractive narrow paved streets of the old town is marvellous. With two mountains crowned by medieval fortresses overlooking and guarding the town, one of them a strong fortress of Palamidi, dating from the Venetian ages with its amazing views to the sea.
The magical, historic, timeless, charming town has four fine museums, three castles and three beaches.

Ναύπλιο Nafplion the 1st capital of Greece (1824) Nafplio Greece

Nafplio in Greece, Former Capital of the First Hellenic Republic
Nafplio is a small town in Peloponnese, Greece. The name is the remnant of the old venetian name Napoli di Romania, the name of the area during the late Byzantine times. Nafplio is a seaport town that has expanded up the hillsides near the north end of the Argolic Gulf. The town was the capital of the First Hellenic Republic.
A sovereign naval nation-city in ancient times, Nafplio was founded and named after - according to Greek mythology - by hero Nafplios, father of Palamidis. A target for Franks, Venetians and Ottomans, they all repeatedly tried, and succeeded quite a few times, to conquer it. In 1829, after the Greek War of Independence from the Ottoman Empire, Nafplio was chosen as the first capital of the new-founded state and democracy. His palace was on the square in front of today's town hall. In 1833 the capital moved to Athens, the town remaining capital of the prefecture. It is a historical city due to its meaning to the Greek Revolution. It has a fantastic centre with small neoclassical historical houses, squares and churches.
Nowadays, when taking a walk in the picturesque alleys of the Old Town, visitors are drawn by the venetian balconies and the wonderful neoclassical buildings and mansions, images that bring feelings of sweet nostalgia. Relax at the numerous cafés on the port whilst viewing the sea, and visit Palamidi fortress for a scenic view of the Argolic gulf.
The town is built in two parts, the old, covering all the peninsula and the new, expanding to the north and the east. It is sometimes confusing to some that the hill overlooking the town is on the south of the town and the sea on the north. But once you notice it is easy to walk around the orderly shaped blocks.
