Higashi Chaya machi walk, Kanazawa, Japan - Virtual Trip
In Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, three old neighborhoods dating from the Edo period are a delight for tourists. In the same geographical area, on both sides of the river Sagano, one can already visit the district of Higashi Chaya and Kazuemachi street. South of the city, beyond the Sai River, Nishi Chaya Street and finally in the center, the former samurai Nagamachi district. The first three are the old traditional tea houses in which geishas practiced their art.
In Kanazawa, Higashi Chaya is the largest group of traditional houses dating back to the Edo period. Along two or three streets and their perpendiculars, we can walk in the middle of a hundred well-maintained wooden houses that plunge us into the heart of old Japan. The vast majority of these houses have become nowadays discrete souvenir shops or chic restaurants, but one comes mostly to this district to admire the magnificent façades aged by time and for its timeless atmosphere.
The street is flat, pedestrian and without sidewalks and the houses are glued to each other, perfectly aligned on two floors: the perspectives seem almost too perfect.

Kanazawa Walking Tours׃ Meet The Masters (Ceramics)
Kanazawa Walking Tours continues its series of introducing Kanazawa's finest artisans to the world. Our 'Meet The Masters' team introduce the 11th generation ceramics artisan Ohi-san.
Ohi san comes from a long line of Ceramics specialists, his ancestors were originally summoned from Kyoto by Lord Maeda, a prominent samurai and generous supporter of the arts. His ancestors were invited to stay and work for the Maeda clan in Kanazawa, 11 generations later they are still serving the clan and the city.
Specialising in ceramic ware, such as tea ceremony items and incense cases the family have thrived in their Kanazawa residence, still standing today near Higashi Chaya.
Ohi-san can be met on our exclusive 'Meet The Masters' tours available at
KANAZAWA || EP 8 || Traditional Oyakodon (Chicken and Egg Bowl) 親子丼 at ちょう吉 (Chichiyoshi)
Oyakodon 親子丼 is Chicken and Egg Bowl simmered in an umami rich dashi-based sauce. It is then poured over a bowl of fluffy steamed rice. Simple, delicious, and utterly comforting!
When we found Chichiyoshi in an Ishikawa’s alleyway, we thought we gave it a try. It surely didn’t disappoint as the egg was sooo fluffy and the chicken was unbelievably fragrant with charcoal grilled taste.
We didn’t stopped there as we’ve bumped into another little gem at a corner of a traffic light (Address: Ishikawa Kanazawa, 3-20, Hashibacho).
They were selling little snacks and rice koji smoothie (mine was blueberry). It tasted creamily AMAZING! Upstairs there was a little room displaying Kanazawa’s Mascot: Hyakuman-san (百万さん)
