Trains of Japan | Nagano Dentetsu line from Nagano station to Yudanaka station FULL
We went to see the Japanese snow monkeys at the Jikokudani monkey park. A nice and relatively short train ride takes you from Nagano station to the onsen resort of Yudanaka.

This is the Nagano Electric Railway serving a popular tourist town called Obuse as well as Yudanaka where the snow monkeys live. This railway operates 1000 Series trains where the driver sits in a cab above the passenger cabin. It also operates former Narita Express Trains. There is a complete POV time-lapse video included.

Wow, Jigokudani is amazing. A nice 30 minute hike (beware of the ice though) through a very scenic area. Everything blanketed in snow. Once you arrive at the park, there are tons of monkeys. It is crowded, as to be expected. Tons of photographers with their thousands of dollars of photo equipment, and cell phone photographers alike, all jockeying for a great view to capture the scene. Getting here isn't too bad from Nagano Station. I went with the direct bus there, then the local bus and yudanaka train to get back. All in all it's such a neat thing to witness and I'm very glad I had the chance to go!

How to buy the Snow Monkey 1-Day Pass: Follow the signs for the Nagano Dentetsu line inside Nagano Station. At the end of the long hallway there will be a small ticket window on your right. Just walk up and ask for Snow Monkey 1-Day Pass. It saves you a few bucks, gets you a free sticker, and has all the timetables and info in one convenient little pamphlet. Plus you don't have to do any transactions along the way, just show the pass.

Jigokudani Monkey Park in Nagano, Japan
While in Nagano, we took a quick hike up a hiking path from our Ryokan to visit the Jigokudani Monkey Park. We were amazed to watch these Japanese Macaque (also known as Snow Monkeys) enjoy the onsen, play with one another, and be completely comfortable with having people around.

Snow train in Nagano, Japan
Instead of taking the bus back from Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park to Nagano, we followed the advice of someone on Trip Advisor, and took the Nagano Dentetsu-Nagano Line from Yudanaka Station to Obuse. It was a majestic and beautiful ride - the train has huge open windows in the front that let you see out of the train, and a very nice lady let us take the front seat.
