Yokohama Mary - trailer
An old lady whose make-up is as white as that of a Kabuki actor's and dresses in an aristocratic dress is standing on the streets of Yokohama. She has concealed her real name and age, and for 50 years after the war, she has lived her life as a prostitute. She has become known as the most beautiful prostitute of her time and her elegant presence has become a part of the city's scenery. People call her Yokohama Mary.
In the winter of 1995, Mary suddenly disappeared. As she mentioned nothing about herself, rumors started to spread, and one day she became the heroine of an urban legend. There were also people who warmly watched over her. Ganjiro Nagato, a Chanson singer with not much time left to live, tells us how he feels about Mary. I want to meet Mary again. I want to sing in front of her again...
The director of this documentary is a young 30 year old named Takahiro Nakamura. After Mary disappeared, he started interviewing various people, as if following her shadow. What he saw through Mary were the universal activities, feelings, and the subtleties of life of the people living in the city. After five years of filming, he created a documentary that was filled with pure sensation with genuine feelings towards his home tome Yokohama. At the 2005 Yufuin Film Festival, although a documentary, the film received a thunderous applause from the audience...

YUBARI Ep. 3 - YUBARI LIFE
Episode 3 of the Yubari series shows you the enthusiasm of Yubari. This fast paced edit to Japanese drums shows you life behind the scenes of the Melon Bear and the deep pow. This is the Yubari community.
Life in Yubari has seen some changes over the past twenty years. The Yubari region was once Japan’s coal mining capital but has since seen a staggering population exodus as the coal industry disappeared in the 1980's. What remains attached to the ghost town today is the Mount Racy ski resort and a few friendly locals who are hoping for a comeback rooted in tourism rather than tunneling.
The truth, however, is that Mount Racey and the town of Yubari is one of Japan’s best-kept secrets that shouldn’t be missed on a trip to the far east. In the spring there is the aptly named Yubari International Fantastic Film Festival, then a cherry blossom festival, and a summer festival before the gorgeous colored leaves are celebrated in autumn.
So as you can see don't judge a town by its buildings because there's more life in Yubari than most places we've ever been.
