Nageshwar Jyotirlinga - Darukavana...Yatra 2010
Nageshwara Jyotirlinga is one of the 12 Jyotirlinga shrines mentioned in the Shiva Purana. Nageshwara is believed as the first Jyotirlinga on the earth. There are three major shrines in India which are believed as identical to this Jyotirlinga. Those are the Jageshwar temple near Almora in Uttarakhand state, the Nageshwara temple near Dwaraka in Gujarat state and the Nagnath temple in Aundha in Maharashtra state. Nageshwar is one of the most breathtaking pilgrimage centres in India. Popular stories say that even Lord Krishna used to offer his prayers in Nageshwar.
This linga in Nageshwar is made of a stone known as Dwarka Shila. It has small chakras on its top and looks like a tri-mukhi rudraksh. It is said that when Aurangzeb attacked Nageshwar for demolition, thousands of bees attacked him. He and his army had to leave.

Dwarka is an ancient city in the northwestern Indian state of Gujarat. It’s known as a Hindu pilgrimage site. The ancient Dwarkadhish Temple has an elaborately tiered main shrine, a carved entrance and a black-marble idol of Lord Krishna. Dwarka Beach and nearby Dwarka Lighthouse offer views of the Arabian Sea.
Nageshwar Jyotirling - Located on the route between Dwarka city and Beyt Dwarka Island on the coast of Saurashtra in Gujarat is this important Lord Shiva Temple. It is enshrined by one of the 12 swayambhu (self-existent) jyothirlingas in the world, in an underground sanctum. A 25 m tall statue of a sitting Lord Shiva and a large garden with a pond are major attractions of this rather serene place. Some archaeological excavations claim five earlier cities at the site.
Nageshwar was believed to be known as 'Darukavana', which is an ancient epic name of a forest in India. Below are two well-known legends attached to this mystical temple:
According to the first legend, 'Balakhilyas', a group of dwarf sages worshipped Lord Shiva in Darukavana for long a time. To test their devotion and patience, Shiva came to them as a nude ascetic wearing only nagas [serpants] on his body. Wives of sages got attracted to the saint and went after him, leaving their husbands behind. Sages got very disturbed and outraged by this. They lost their patience and cursed the ascetic to loose his linga [one of the limited meanings is Phallus, but it has has a deeper theistic symbolism]. Shiva linga fell on the earth and the whole world trembled. Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu came to Lord Shiva, requesting him to save the earth from destruction and take back his linga. Shiva consoled them and took back his linga. [From Vamana Purana CH.6th & 45th]. Lord Shiva promised his divine presence in Darukavana as 'jyothirlinga' for ever.
bet dwarika - Bet Dwarka is believed to have been the actual residential place of Lord Krishna during his ruling years at Dwarka. It is said the lord resided with his family at Bet Dwarka. The place derived its name from the ‘bet’ or ‘gift’ that Lord Krishna received at this place from his friend Sudama. In our ancient epic, ‘Mahabharata’ we often come across the reference of Bet Dwarka known by the name of ‘Antardvipa’ to which people of the Yadava clan needed to travel by boat. The island is also differently referred to Shankhodhar. The reason is that it is dotted with a huge number and variety of conch shells. Explorations and excavations carried out under the sea revealed the presence of certain settlements whose age can be traced back to the era of the Harappan civilization and that of the Mauryan rule. Inscription of Simhaditya dated 574AD also makes a mention of Dwarka. The region was previously under the administration of the Gaekwad clan of the state of Baroda. During the revolt of 1857, Vaghers attacked the region and captured it. Around 1859 the rebels were overthrown and the region was retrieved by its actual rulers. Post independence, the region became part of the Saurashtra state which later merged with the state of Bombay. When the state of Gujarat was carved out of the Bombay state, Bet Dwarka was included as part of Gujarat’s Jamnagar district.
