NOTES ABOUT THE SHOW:
This is the 1st show of the band with Joe Satriani stepping in for Ritchie Blackmore, who departed from the band recently. The setlist truly deserves a line of praises, as it's nicely enhanced when compared to European leg - 3 more Machine Head cuts plus Ramshackle Man instead of Talk About Love. It's hard to comment the artistic value - Joe plays great, but totally predictable on the super high level of all the gigs that he's done. I thinl it might be more interesting to hear how Colin Hart, the Tour Manager, remembers this particular gig (thanks for Colin Hart and Dick Allix for providing this in a book).
So we got to Japan, where we had scheduled tree full days of rehearsals with Joe. (...) Joe knew the set as he'd had the tapes from Roger. They began and it was stunning. It was as he'd been with Deep Purple from the very beginning. (...) At the end of the session, not only did we know that it would be all right, but we felt that the next two days of rehearsals were completely unnecessary. We could have done the show that night, nobody could doubt that. (...) The (...) show was in Nagoya, Rainbow Hall. (...) Game, set, match to Joe. The show was fantastic. Whenever it came to the celebrated guitar breaks, the crowd almost held it's breath waiting to see if Joe would put his slant on it or do it like it was meant to be. (...) He didn't dissapoint and, if you looked away, it could've been Ritchie, but the time honoured lick done, Joe would add his own brillance. (...) We floated on through Japan on the cloud of euphoria.
Thanks to the taper, enjoy the show!
