弘仁年間弘法大師空海によって勧請されたと伝えられ、江戸時代中期には別当である金蔵院によって巨石の上に石宮、 後に弁財天像（現在も金蔵院弁財天堂に祀られる）が造立されました。江戸時代の祭典の際には、弁財天を運び祭礼を行っていたましたが、明治維新の神仏分離により、 厳島神社となり平成元年新たに弁財天を造立しました。

鎮座している名草巨石群は国指定の天然記念物です。　　　
足利七福神めぐり社寺の一つで弁財天福徳財宝・家内和合の神社です。
