Naha Tug of War Festival 2017 Okinawa
Cotey and I went downtown to witness the annual giant Tug O' War festival hosted in Naha Okinawa Japan. The festival includes a parade that takes place on Kokusai street and then leads to the end of the street of highway 58. The Rope is in Guinness world records for biggest Tug of war. We had no idea what was going on but we always love visiting Naha.
Naha Otsunahiki Matsuri(Naha Gianttug of War Festival), Okinawa
Fantastic Places in Cool Japan :
Originally, there was a custom in Okinawa that tells the omens of the year by tug of war. It is said that this custom already existed in Naha in the 1600s.
In the 17th century, along with the development of Naha, an event was held to compete as “Nahayomachi Large Ropes”. However, the game was heated and fights continued, so rules were set in 1812 and they were treated as important events in Okinawa.
It ends once in 1935 when it enters the Pacific War, but revives in 1971 after Okinawa is returned to Japan. And in 1995, it was recognized by the Guinness Book of Records as “the best straw rope in the world”. In 2011, the name of the festival was changed from “Naha Festival” to “Naha Otsunahiki Matsuri” (Naha Gianttug of War Festival).

World's Largest Tug-O-War: Naha Festival
Hey everyone! So in this video I talk about my experiences at Okinawa's Naha Festival's tug-o-war. This is a famous tug-o-war that many foreigners come to experience. It is actually the world's largest tug-o-war, and thousands of people come to participate. It was very lively at the festival, and the tug-o-war was very crowded, hot, and sweaty. I don't regret a thing either! It is a memory I want to keep forever, and every time I look at my rope I think of it. It was just amazing. And overall the festival was truly great! I hope some of you get to experience it one day :)
Oh but beware! I got a blister from the tug-o-war :p
