Nahal Amud or Pillar Stream in the Galilee of Israel

The Nahal Amud or Pillar Stream is a beautiful stream in the Galilee protected in the Nahal Amud Nature Reserve. The stream originates 800 meters above sea level at the Dalton Plateau in the Upper Galilee and flows southward into the Sea of Galilee. A very popular hiking attraction for Israelis, the Nahal Amud trail rambles past orchards, Mount Meron backdrops, and clear swimming holes and of course the large amud or stone pillar for which the stream is named.

Nahal Amud, or: the Pillar stream, flows from Ramat Dalton in the Upper Galilee region (alt. +800m) , down to the Sea of Galilee (alt -200m). It is named after the pillar viewed here east of Kibbutz Hukok. This nature reserve is a popular weekend hiking place, with an entrance near the road to Hukok. You can watch rock hyrax wandering around (such as seen in this video at 2:54 to the left of the base of the pillar), wild pigs, birds and more.
The gorge of the lower Wadi Amud section was inhabited by the Early Man (Homo Heidelbergensis and Neanderthal species) who dwelt in the four caves in this area. The 'Amud' cave, behind the pillar and 30m above the valley, was where the 50,000 years old Neanderthal skull was found. That cave also served as a hiding complex during the great revolt and the middle ages.

Nahal Alexander, Turtle bridge, Israel

Nahal Alexander (Alexander river), located to the north of Netanya, attracts not only children, but adults by its habitants, giant soft-shell turtles. Despite the fact that they are carnivorous and generally eat fish, worms and insects, they were also eating bread with pleasure. You can also meet a nutria and a muscovy duck there. There are places for barbecue and a playground for children.

Nahal Zalmon or the Zalmon River in the Galilee of Israel

The Nahal Zalmon or Zalmon River is one of the few rivers in Israel which has water all year round. This video travels aerially along the Nahal Zalmon. The edge of the river is dotted with 19th century flour mills which were powered by the running water. Located in the Upper Galilee and empting into the Sea of Galilee, this stream is by far one of the most beautiful in the Galilee. Nowadays, the stream is used only for agricultural purposes and for hiking and picnicking.
