Two fascinating stops as we travel south along the western shore of the Dead Sea. See where the Dead Sea scrolls were found, how the community that lived here in the desert got fresh water to drink and wash, and where David hid from King Saul and spared his life when he could have killed him.
ZAKA Rescue Mission for flooded Israeli victims
Jerusalem, April 26, 2018 - Nine high school students, eight girls and one boy, were swept to their deaths in torrential flash floods while hiking with their fellow students in Nahal Tzafit, a narrow riverbed in the southern Dead Sea area. At the time of writing, volunteers from ZAKA Negev and ZAKA special units are still at the scene, where the night-time search for the last missing student continues under extremely difficult conditions of low visibility, heavy rain and flood danger. Is there life on Arava? (VIDEO)
Hope you'll enjoy this video, it's a fairly raw glimpse on the desert landscape - I filmed it last Saturday morning while trekking on NW Arava with Mr. Goltz, Sienna and Bohyeon. It gives you a strange, peculiar feeling of walking on the surface of the Moon or Mars, or some other desolate planet out there. It must be quite similar, I guess. Total silence. Tranquility. The sense of distance is very relevant. Minimalism on the scenery. Earthly colors. Dryness.
Is there life on Arava?
Geography of Israel
The geography of Israel is very diverse, with desert conditions in the south, and snow-capped mountains in the north. Israel is located at 31°30′N 34°45′E at the eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea in western Asia. It is bounded to the north by Lebanon, the northeast by Syria, the east by Jordan and the West Bank, and to the southwest by Egypt. To the west of Israel is the Mediterranean Sea, which makes up the majority of Israel's 273 km coastline and the Gaza Strip. Israel has a small coastline on the Red Sea in the south.
Israel's area is approximately 20,770 km2, which includes 445 km2 of inland water. Israel stretches 424 km from north to south, and its width ranges from 114 km to, at its narrowest point, 15 km. The Israeli-occupied territories include the West Bank, 5,879 km2, East Jerusalem, 70 km2 and the Golan Heights, 1,150 km2. Geographical features in these territories will be noted as such.
