BAKOURA, Jordan — A Jordanian soldier unleashed volleys of automatic rifle fire on Israeli schoolgirls who were on a field trip at the scenic Island of Peace border post Thursday, killing seven of the junior high students and wounding six.
Witnesses said 40 to 50 eighth-graders had gotten off their bus and were surveying the sun-washed view over the River Jordan when the gunman grabbed a fellow soldier's weapon and began firing at the students' backs from a guard tower.

i24NEWS DESK | Netanyahu's plans to annex the Jordan Valley and northern part of the Dead Sea is facing criticism. Jonathan Regev has the details.
Story: Related | UN chief Antonio Guterres warned Wednesday that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's plan to annex a key part of the occupied West Bank would violate international law.
Such steps, if implemented, would constitute a serious violation of international law, Guterres' spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a statement.
They would be devastating to the potential of reviving negotiations and regional peace, while severely undermining the viability of the two-state solution, he said.
Netanyahu's controversial pledge involves extending Israel's sovereignty over the Jordan Valley and the northern Dead Sea, which account for one-third of the West Bank, if he wins next week's elections.
It would not include however annexing any Palestinian cities such as Jericho.
The pre-election promise late Tuesday drew immediate condemnation from Arab powerhouses with many warning -- like Guterres -- of disastrous consequences for the stagnant Israeli-Palestinian peace process.
On Wednesday, the Israeli premier said he would have declared sovereignty over the disputed piece of land immediately, but Israel's attorney general Avichai Mandelblit told the Prime Minister that he did not have the authority to do so until he formed a new government after the upcoming elections.
Denying the declaration was an empty campaign promise, Netanyahu said in a Facebook live video that he wanted to act on it immediately.
I wanted to already bring it to the Knesset last week, [but] the attorney general said to me ‘you can’t because it is a transitional government, he added.
According to an official to the Times of Israel, the plan for sovereignty has been in the works for months, “but there were legal issues with doing anything before the elections. The attorney general said it cannot be done now due to legal constraints.”
Netanyahu continued to say he was waiting for the Trump administration to unveil a long-awaited Israel-Palestinian peace plan, which is expected to be released after the national election rerun on September 17.
ISRAEL: JORDANIAN SOLDIER KILLS 7 SCHOOL GIRLS AT BORDER POST
English/Nat
A Jordanian soldier fired on a group of Israeli school girls at a border observation post Thursday, killing seven and wounding six.
The soldier chased the terrified school girls down a hill and changed ammunition clips before he was overpowered.
The soldiers opened fire just before noon as the seventh and eighth graders from central Israel stood at an observation post on the island of Naharayim on the Israeli-Jordan border.
The soldiers chased the frightened girls down a hill and changed ammunition clips before he was overpowered by fellow soldiers, witnesses said.
Naharayim is part of Jordan, but Israeli civilians have free access under the 1994 peace accord between the two countries.

Jordan - Israel Evacuates Border Stretch
T/I: 11:19:22
The Israeli army evacuated a 70 kilometre (45 miles) stretch of
land along the border with Jordan on Monday (30/1). The Jordanians
raised the Hashemite flag over the land near Aqaba to saying that
the first stage in the implementation of the Israeli-Jordanian
peace treaty had been completed. The accord was signed in July
1994. By February 9th, Israel is expected to have withdrawn from a
140 kilometres long (86 mile) strip reaching from Al-Ghamar all
the way to the south of the Dead Sea, giving Jordan back a total
of 340 square kilometers. After the low-key ceremony, Israeli and
Jordanian officers shook hands. Israel has occupied the area
since soon after the 1967 Middle East war. Once the withdrawal has
been completed, the new border will restore the frontier that
divided Palestine and Transjordan under the pre-1948 British
Mandate.

The Valley of Springs
The Valley of Springs, which the Talmud calls The gate of Garden of Eden, is one of the most beautiful pearls of nature in Israel. The valley offers an abundance of water sites, with a temperature that allows swimming all year round - over 40 visible and hidden springs, various streams and the Jordan River which serves as a border of peace with the Kingdom of Jordan. We have developed a hiking trail that extends 140 kilometers through the valley from the Jordan river to the Gilboa mountains, giving access to communities, tourist sites, natural areas, heritage sites and open agricultural areas, including:
'Gan Hashlosha-Sahne', which was voted one of the most beautiful parks in the world, according to Time Magazine. In the garden are the natural pools of the Amal River spring (Assi) with a t water temperature of 28 degrees all year round, lawns, waterfalls, play areas and picnic areas. In addition, visitors can enjoy the Museum of Regional and Mediterranean Archeology, the visitor center of Homa and Migdal (Wall and Tower outposts), an old restored mill and more.
'Park Hamayanot' offers a variety of hiking and recreation possibilities - the beautiful springs that flow all year round, the fish ponds, the agricultural areas, the migrating birds, the landscape, nature and water. the recommended way of touring is to rent environmentally friendly electric vehicles or bicycles and travel the paths throughout the park, including a wetland path dedicated to the memory of IDF officer Tzvika Kaplan, aqueduct and flour mill, heritage sites and fishing ponds.
Old Gesher – including the Naharayim site, telling the story of the beginning of settlement in the valley and the story of Pinchas Rotenberg- founder of the first electric plant in Israel - and his vision of electricity in Israel.
The Bird Watching Center, which combines bird-watching, nature and recreational activities, offers a wide range of activities in nature: guided tours and workshops in the spirit of bird migration over the Spring Valley.
Other attractions include: Kokhav Hayarden National Park, the Menahemia Medical House, the Kurdish Tourism Village in Yardena, the organic bio-tour project in the religious Kibbutz Sde Eliyahu, GAN-GURU Park, the Ganei Hooga water site as well as many others which await you.
