The Shilin Stone Forest - 石林 - or Shilin Yizu Zizhixian - 石林彝 族 自治县 - located southeast of Kunming is a highlight for all visitors.
Shilin Yi Autonomous County, formerly called Lunan County, is home to the Yi nationality and under the jurisdiction of Kunming , the provincial capital of Yunnan in China. The bizarre formations of the Stone Forrest stretch across 24,000 hectares. 80 hectares of the Stone Forrest have been developed for tourists. 270 million years ago, sediment settled in the sea. Later the sediments were lifted tectonically and the soft layers were eroded by wind and water. The limestone formations reach a height of 98 ft.
Since 2007, two parts of the Stone Forest - the Naigu Stone Forest and the Suogeyi Village - belong to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites as part of the South China Karst.

China, Dali - Shilin (Stone Forest) - Kunming 2017
Dali Town (Chinese: 大理镇; pinyin: Dàlǐ Zhèn) is a township-level division in Dali City, Yunnan, China. The town contains the historic centre of the county-level city of Dali and is also commonly known as Dali Old Town (Chinese: 大理古城; pinyin: Dàlǐ Gǔchéng). Dali has long been a regional centre of commerce, being located at a crossroads of trade routes between Tibet, China, Burma, and Southeast Asia. The Bai people first settled the region 3000 years ago. The old town was the medieval capital of both the Bai kingdom Nanzhao (fl. 8th and 9th centuries) and the Kingdom of Dali (937–1253). That city was razed and its records burnt during its conquest by China's Mongolian Yuan Dynasty. The present old town was organized in the late 14th century under the Hongwu Emperor of the Ming Dynasty. The area became significantly Muslim (Hui) under the Yuan and Ming and was the center of the Panthay Rebellion against the Qing from 1856–1863. It was severely damaged during a massive earthquake in 1925.

According to legend, the forest is the birthplace of Ashima (阿诗玛), a beautiful girl of the Yi people. After falling in love she was forbidden to marry her chosen suitor and instead turned into a stone in the forest that still bears her name.[4] Each year on the 24th day of the sixth lunar month, many Yi people celebrate the Torch Festival (火把节 Huǒbă Jié), which features folk dances and wrestling competitions.

The tall rocks seem to arise from the ground in a manner somewhat reminiscent of stalagmites, or with many looking like petrified trees, thereby creating the illusion of a forest made of stone. This stone forest Kunming area was a shallow sea some 270 million years ago. Extensive deposits of sandstone overlain by limestone accumulated in this basin during the Permian period of geologic time. Uplift of this region occurred subsequent to deposition. Later, exposure to wind and running water shaped these limestone pillars.

Southwest China includes Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan, Guangxi provinces and Chongqing municipality. It had long been the Wild, Wild West of China dated back to 221 BC, and people who lived here had long been called as Xinan Yi , literally, southwestern foreigners or barbarians.
The faraway distance to China central inland and the complicated geographic conditions made this mountain-locked corner a remote, underdeveloped region and even nowadays, a less-developed region in China, in the meantime, created a variety of spectacular landscapes and rich, colorful, unique ethnic histories and cultures.
Along the long river of history, traces of the ancient Southern Silk Road & Tea-horse Caravan Road have been disappearing in high mountains and deep valleys, while the Burma Road built in WWII still serves the people...Great changes happened and happens everyday in Southwest China, there is already so much being explored, and still, so much waiting to be explored...
Through this website, we hope we can help you to discover this part of China a little deeper, a little wilder, a little much easier, and a little bit more fun. We wish you have a great journey!
