Nairn is a town and former burgh in the Highland council area of Scotland. Nairn is an ancient fishing port and market town around 16 miles east of Inverness. Nairn was the county town of the wider county of Nairn also known as Nairnshire.
Nairn is now best known as a seaside resort, with two golf courses, award-winning beaches, a community centre/mid-scale arts venue (Nairn Community & Arts Centre), a small theatre (called The Little Theatre) and one small museum, providing information on the local area and incorporating the collection of the former Fishertown museum.
Nairn has an expanse of sand beaches that were used extensively in training exercises for the Normandy landings during World War 2. The beaches around Nairn had landmines planted, during clearance operations in 1945 by 11th Company, Bomb Disposal, Royal engineers. High pressure water jetting was used to displace shingle on top of mines to make clearance easier. Notably during this period two German spies who had been dropped by U-boat in the Moray Firth were arrested at Nairn Railway Station attempting to board a train to Inverness.
The A96 from Inverness to Aberdeen currently passes through Nairn town itself. Fergus Ewing, Scottish National Party MSP for Inverness and Nairn (and before 2011 Inverness East, Nairn and Lochaber), has been canvassing for a Nairn by-pass to be developed. Nairn Improvement Community Enterprise was formed in 2010 as a company limited by guarantee to facilitate the regeneration of Nairn Town Centre and its surrounding areas and membership is open to all residents.
The town also hosts the Nairn International Jazz Festival. Nairn is also the host for the annual Nairn Book & Arts festival which takes place every year in June at the Nairn Community & Arts Centre. Nairn is home to the Little Theatre, run by the Nairn Drama Club, which was established in 1946. Nairn stages one of the biggest Highland games in the North.

It does not look very big, tall yes, but you will be amazed at the amount of rooms etc there are inside. It is a typical fortification, the bedrooms(?) are basic, just enough room for a bed, and the halls are functional. This is not a place for entertaining, it is what it is.... a defensive castle.

Eyemouth is a small town and civil parish in Berwickshire, in the Scottish Borders area of Scotland. It is 2 miles east of the main north-south A1 road and just 8 miles north of Berwick-upon-Tweed. Eyemouth is very nearly due east of Glasgow. In fact Eyemouth's latitude is 55.8691°N, whilst Glasgow's is 55.8642°N, so Eyemouth is about 600 yards further north.
The town's name comes from its location at the mouth of the Eye Water. The Berwickshire coastline consists of high cliffs over deep clear water with sandy coves and picturesque harbours. A fishing port, Eyemouth holds a yearly Herring Queen Festival. Notable buildings in the town include Gunsgreen House and a cemetery watch-house built to stand guard against the Resurrectionists (body snatchers). Many of the features of a traditional fishing village are preserved in the narrow streets and 'vennels', giving shelter from the sea and well-suited to the smuggling tradition of old.
Eyemouth is not far from the small villages of Ayton, Reston, St. Abbs, Coldingham and Burnmouth. The coast offers opportunities for birdwatching, walking, fishing and diving. Accommodation includes several hotels, B&Bs and a holiday park. The geology of the area shows evidence of folding that led James Hutton to announce that the surface of the earth had changed dramatically over the ages.
Other places of interest nearby include the fortifications of Berwick-upon-Tweed also designed by Sir Richard Lee, and its military museum, Paxton House, the Union Bridge and the Chain Bridge Honey Farm, and scores of quiet country roads skirting the Cheviot Hills, frequently snow-capped in winter. Many visitors pause on their journey on the A1 to photograph their arrival in Scotland or their departure to England at the border crossing. Though the border has significance to many visitors, most local people think of themselves as 'Borderers' rather than as Scots or English. Nearby the border is a nature trail through the mysteriously named 'Conundrum' Farm. Typical Border towns and villages, such as Kelso, Grantshouse, Abbey St Bathans, Cove, Cockburnspath (pronounced 'coburnspath' or 'copath' by locals), Cornhill, Wooler, Morpeth, Alnmouth and Alnwick are all within easy reach for day trips from Eyemouth. Near Chirnside stood Ninewells House, since demolished, where David Hume, whom many regard as foremost among the philosophers of the Scottish Enlightenment, if not the greatest of all time, spent much of his life.

Had dinner atThe Hotel Consevatory Restaurant and I ordered for my starter - Cullen skink -a lightly smoked scottish cod soup and for my main course -Pan seared North SeaWild halibut-with crab tortellini, bouillabaisse sauce, baby leeks and samphire
Absolutely gorgeous hotel, we were in a garden room so beautiful and spacious. The breakfast was good and I loved the pool , sauna and steam bath.I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone.

V & A Museum - Dundee [4K/UHD]
Sunday 17th September 2018 saw the 2nd day of the V&A Museum in Dundee being open. It was a ticketed day for ballot winners only, so no entry for me.
Instead, I walked around the perimeter of the museum, which is bounded by the River Tay to the South

Fort George is one of the most outstanding fortifications in Europe. It was built in the wake of the Battle of Culloden (1746) as a secure base for King George II’s army.
The imposing fort was designed by Lieutenant-General William Skinner and took 22 years to complete. It has since served the British Army for 250 years, now used as an Infantry Barracks.

Somme Battlefield Pipe Band from France Beating Retreat as guests at Aboyne Highland Games 2019
The Somme Battlefield Pipe Band were special guests at the 2019 Aboyne Highland Games in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The band, which consists of 27 pipers and drummers, took part in the massed band displays and also performed Beating Retreat to mark the end of the Games, which this video shows. Apologies for the sound, there was a funfair by the Games park which can be heard as the band were playing.
The band, a French group formed in 1989 to commemorate the sacrifice of Scottish soldiers who fought in northern France during the wars, performed at the Games to acknowledge the contribution that men from the local area made to Britain’s war effort, including 5 young men from Aboyne who died during the Battle of the Somme. Here the band were performing during Beating Retreat to mark the end of the Games.

Elgin is a former cathedral city and Royal Burgh in Moray, Scotland. Elgin is the administrative and commercial centre for Moray. The town originated to the south of the River Lossie on the higher ground above the floodplain. Elgin is first documented in the Cartulary of Moray in 1190 AD. It was created a Royal Burgh in the 12th century by King David I of Scotland and by that time had a castle on top of the present day Lady Hill to the west of the town.
The modern town straddles the River Lossie, with the suburbs of Bishopmill to the north and New Elgin to the south. Permo-Triassic rocks, rare in Scotland, are commonly found around Elgin. These are composed of aeolian sandstone formed when this area was subjected to desert conditions. Quarry Wood, on the town's edge, has a formation nicknamed Cuttie's Hillock which produced the internationally known fossils called the Elgin Reptiles. In the Elgin district, boulders belonging to the lowest group of Jurassic strata, Oxford clay and chalk are found both in glacial deposits and on the surface of the ground. The largest of these deposits is at Linksfield, where limestone and shale lie on boulder clay. There is a large hill in downtown Elgin, often viewed as the highlight of the Elgin tourist trail.
Elgin is situated on the A96 trunk route which connects the cities of Aberdeen and Inverness. Heavy traffic through the town causes serious congestion. Scottish transport minister Tavish Scott visited the town in August 2006 to look at the traffic management problems and to meet campaigners for a bypass. It is estimated that a bypass would remove about one third of traffic from Elgin's streets. The A941 runs from Lossiemouth through Elgin to Rothes, Craigellachie, Dufftown and Rhynie. Elgin railway station is operated by Abellio ScotRail. The railway also connects to Aberdeen and Inverness which have trains to other UK destinations. Elgin's bus station is operated mainly by Stagecoach, and provides services within Elgin and to other local towns as well as to Aberdeen and Inverness. There is a 'Jet' bus service which runs to the Inverness Airport at Dalcross, Inverness has flights to mainly UK destinations while Aberdeen airport has UK and international flights.
