Okinawa Futenma Obon Eisa
Some Obon dancers from Futenma,Okinawa Japan, gathered in the parking lot in front of Ryubo. Please excuse the poor resolution. This was recorded on my Sony Ericsson S001 cell phone. I probably could have done a better job, however this is my first attempt at this.
We were just going shopping and did not have much time.

DYA717 Japan, Okinawa 2017 01 28 cherry blossoms
6:30 a.m. power breakfast at the Toyoko Inn. 8:45 a.m. checked out and met “M & J”. Drove 30 minutes to my next hotel in Okinawa City, formerly known as Koza. This place is like 5 minutes away from “M & J”. I’m gonna try to BURA-BURA tomorrow and walk the distance. So, after dropping my junks off at the Sunrise Kanko Hotel in Okinawa City, we drove about an hour northwest toward the Churaumi Acquarium. Along the way we stopped at this highway rest stop called IGEI. Then we went to Nago City, veered more west and got to Motobu. Then we headed up Mount Yaedake and viewed cherry trees in bloom. Shucks, was only 30% in bloom. Cousins “M & J” said you need to be here next week – that’s when they think the trees going be in fuller bloom? (how you like my English so far?) We drove up quite a ways, and slowly because lots of people were walking up and down the mountain road. We stopped at a rest stop just below an old radar station where they had coned off the road to prevent us from driving further. “M” said they used to let people go further before. Whatevers! I’m satisfied!
Stopped in Nago City for lunch. I had the MINI TEN-DON and a beverage. Just right! Then went BURA-BURA some more. Went touring in KANUCHA Resort where “M” said he and his Boyz used to go for 3-nighters and golf the while away. Really nice, big resort. He said his son-in-law now works for a company affiliated with this resort and he can rooms for under $10-US or somet’ing li’ dat! What a perk! Saw protestors marching around the sidewalk outside a US Marine base. Then we got back to Okinawa City around 4 p.m. I cleaned up a little and went next door. They have this great supermarket where I got beer and snacks which were really cheap. Better than a convenience store.
Dinner at the TENGU restaurant a coupla blocks from the hotel. Lot’s of ONO Okinawan dishes. For us tho, mostly veggies! Kekekeke ONO!
Obon Festivities in Okinawa Japan ~ August, 2010
Obon is a traditional holiday during the last part of August and early September in Okinawa. It is primarily for ancestor worship and here you see the parade of drummers which traverse the island 24/7 until the festival ends.
Families visit tombs and open them to allow spirits to roam freely about the island. Candles are lit to help the spirits return to their resting places at the end of the holiday.
