Tsumago Juku walk, Kiso Valley, Japan - Virtual Trip
Tsumago Juku is one of the 11 villages on the Kisoji road, which is linked to Nakasendô. This old imperial road from Tokyo to Kyoto in Japan has 69 stopover villages and Tsumago is the 42nd. This one, like Magome or Narai has been completely restored and its appearance is that of a village of the Edo period (1600 -1868). Lost in the Kiso Valley in Nagano Prefecture, Tsumago is less than 100km east of Nagoya.
Tsumago Juku is a Shukuba, a former office or post office, and it is with Magome and Narai one of the best preserved.

Historic Walks - Nagiso, Japan
#116: NAGISO-DAKE 南木曽岳 - WINTER HITS BACK!
Hiking Nagiso-dake 南木曽岳 in Nagano, Japan.
April 2019:
So much for that glorious Japanese spring weather! Shooting for a quartet of peaks during my spring break and I was stymied by a final wintery blast sweeping across central Japan. Arriving in Nagano's Kiso Valley, I was greeted by mountaintops splashed with snow...seems like ever since last summer's heat induced retreat that the moutains of Kiso aren't giving in without a fight.
Nitty Gritty:
As it's name suggests, Nagiso-dake sits at the southern end of the Kiso Range (Central Alps), rising above the old Nakasendo Highway and the post town of Tsumago. The main trail runs up the mountain from the south and splits into an ascent and descent route. It's doable as a day hike but a summit emergency hut allows you to make a leisurely two days out of it. A trail also runs up the north side of the mountain directly out of Nagiso Station but I'm not sure it offers as many views as the main route.

Two Days on the Nakasendo
This photo video contains images from a walking trip through the best preserved and most beautiful section of the old Nakasendo, or Central Mountain Road, that passes through the Kiso Valley. Dave and I started in Nagiso-machi (former Midono-juku), stayed the night in preserved Tsumago-juku and ended in Magome-juku.
To learn more about the trip and the Nakasendo read on at:
The music is Jeremy Soule's From Past to Present off the Skyrim soundtrack.

Narai Juku, Kiso Valley, Japan, 奈良井宿 - Canon 80D - Virtual Trip
#narai,#japan
Narai Juku is one of those traditional Japanese villages, located in Nagano Prefecture, about an hour from Nagano. It is the 34th step city of Nakasendô, the imperial road linking Edo to Kyoto. It is also the second village of Kisoji, the former trade route before the Nakasendô and which already connected 11 villages in the Kiso Valley.
Narai-juku was apparently the most prosperous village at the time and served as a stop for travelers, who then passed through the Torii Pass, the most difficult passage of the entire route.
The village stretches for almost a kilometer, wedged between the green hills and the Naraigawa River. The city was nicknamed the city of a thousand buildings, and even today, it is an exception in the valley, because it is the only village where so many old houses line up so far: is the largest Shukuba or post office of Nakasendô.
Narai Juku is administratively cut into three parts named Kanmachi (for the top of the village), Nakamachi (the middle of the village) and Shimomachi (the city below). The entire visit of the village takes between 1 hour and 2 hours.
Narai-juku has a very large number of accommodations, sumptuous and huge ryokan, and it is an excellent step that can allow you to cut the road to Kyoto or Tokyo.
From Narai, you can take the train to Kiso Fukushima, Nagiso or Nakatsugawa to visit the other historic lighthouse villages of this ancient imperial and commercial route.

Beautiful classical Japanese town : Tsumago-juku -妻籠宿-
Tsumago-juku is a town located in Nagiso, Nagano prefecture and flourished as a shukuba machi (post town) on Nakasendo (Central Mountain Route) in Edo-era.
Tsumago-juku and Magome-juku, which is a next post town, are popular sightseeing spots of Kisoji.
Tsumago-juku still preserves classical buildings and atmosphere of old times.
We saw a cute cat and many swallows. They seemed to love this town too.
Please enjoy its beautiful scene.

Japan Trip: Tsumago's Honjin Edo daimyo inn, Kiso Valley, Nagano11 Moopon
Tsumago was a post town on the Nakasendo route between Kyoto and Edo. It is known today as one of the best preserved post towns in Japan. The town and its residents go to great lengths to recreate the environment and atomosphere of the Edo Period. Cars are not allowed on the main street in the day and phone lines and power cables are kept concealed, allowing visitors to imagine they have slipped back to an earlier time.
Tsumago also recreates the post town ambience by maintaining its Honjin and Wakihonjin. In all post towns, the Honjin was the principal inn and served government officials who were traveling through. When more accomodations were required, the Wakihonjin served to accommodate the travelers of lower status. Tsumago also maintains the office where laborers and horses were rented to aid in travel.
Tsumago's Honjin was reconstructed in the 1990s, but great efforts have been taken so that it resembles its condition in the 1830s, when it served as an inn.
Information on Honjin
Hours: 9:00 to 17:00
Closed: December 29 to January 1
Admission: 300 yen
700 yen combo ticket includes Honjin, Wakihonjin and Rekishi Shiryokan

Nunobiki Falls and Strolling Around Kobe! (布引の滝&神戸での散歩)
We went on a hike to Nunobiki Falls in Kobe. It took around 1 hour to get there from where we live. It's already December so we could barely saw the autumn leaves. The direction leading to the falls was pretty clear and we could easily get there. There weren't many people around, so we could enjoy the beautiful falls better. If you like nature and hiking, then i recommend you to visit these falls!
NEAREST STATION TO THESE PLACES:
☞ Nunobiki Falls: Shin-Kobe Station (Subway/Shinkansen)
☞ Nankin-machi Chinatown: Motomachi Station (Hanshin Line/JR Line)
I must admit that Kobe is a really beautiful city!

Sake Tasting in Kiso-Fukushima, Japan
An easy 2-1/2 mile walk led along country lanes and house from Tsumago to Nojiri and the Nojiri train station. The group admired the Momosuke wooden bridge built around 1920 before dispersing in different directions, most to meet up in Kiso Fukushima for transfer to tonight's Ryokan.
Then on the train in Nojiri for a short train ride to Kiso-Fukushima, a large town on the Nakasendo Road where Steve and I spent a few hours walking around. Unfortunately, all information about their historical spots were in Japanese with no English translation and we could only guess at what they were used for. Wandering around, we stumbled into a free Sake tasting for locals. The Japanese were happily filling up sake cups with free samples, slurping bowls of soup, eating food give-aways and we happily joined in. Kampai (cheers)!
