The fort is approximately 120 kilometres to the west of Muscat, the capital of Oman, at the entrance of Wilayt Nakhal in Wadi Ar Raqeem. It is situated on a rocky prominence at the foot of Jebel Nakhal, a spur of the main Western Hajar range. It is to the northeast of Jabal Akhdar also called green mountain. Nakhal Fort is surrounded by orchards of palm trees. Its battlements provide a view of the Al-Batinah Region. The ancient Nakhal village is below the fort and close by is the warm springs of Ain A'Thawwarah.
Nakhal Fort - Build back in Pre-Islamic Era

Nakhal Fort is one of the most prominent historical monuments in the Sultanate. It derives its name from the Wilaya itself. The fort lies amidst palm orchards in Wilayt Nakhal in Al Batinah South Governorate. It is an entrenched building that rises above a rocky hill at the base of Mount Nakhal in the northeast of Al Jabal Al Akhdar (Green Mountain).
The fort, also called Husn Al Heem, lies 120 kilometres from the capital Muscat and is located at the entrance of Wilayt Nakhal in Wadi Ar Raqeem.
This fort’s architecture does not follow a particular pattern, as it was designed around an irregularly shaped rock. You'll find that some rock parts become part of the building. This can be observed in some towers, particularly on the fort’s western side.
The construction of the castle dates back to the pre-Islamic era.

The fortress of Nakat which clung to the river in front of the rugged mountains like a screen. It is a historic fortress built 1500 years ago before the spread of Islamic culture. It seems that once the fortress is on the watchtower, the fortress tried to keep it. Normally, the fortress of Oman is set amongst rugged mountains. But Nakatal Fort is located downstream of the Zabel Aktar Mountains. Very close to the water, there are rivers and hot springs right behind the fortress. Date palms growing lush around the fortress. The last fortress to protect the rich water of the village and the fertile ground is the fortress of Nakal. In the fortress, village monarchs lived with their families. It is a sort of drawing room called 'Barzza'. A monarch called 'Wali' met here with the villagers and discussed the village issue. It's where important decisions were made, such as judging the prisoners or not. . Fortress with full facilities! It is now a museum that exhibits history and life. There are wells all over the place as it is a fortress protecting water. Water pumped from a depth of more than 100 meters. It took me a while to get a good deal. Is it warm? Yes, it is. Soft, warm, touchy water. This well runs from the hot spring over there. Look at how cool the water is. It's very cold with it. The pottery evaporates the heat and the water is cool. Even now, I drink coffee with this water, and I wash it.

Wadi Bani Awf Oman
Wadi Bani Awf Oman. Wadi between Rustaq and Al Awabi, January 2014, Hajjar mountains
Wadi Bani Awf (وادي بني عوف), also spelled Wadi Bani Awuf, is a large wadi in wilayat Al Rustaq in the South Batinah Governorate of Oman. The wadi covers a large area with several villages and lots of cool attractions worth visiting, including the famous Snake Canyon! The route through Wadi Bani Awuf goes through beautiful scenery and connects all the way to Bilad Sayat in Al Dakhiliya region by crossing the Hajr Mountains and offers some of the best off-road driving experience you can find.
We referred to the Oman Off-road Guide during our visit to Wadi Bani Awf (which is a great book that we highly recommend for anyone wanting to explore Oman with their 4WD) and managed to visit the “smaller” Snake Canyon. You can’t refer to Wadi Bani Awf as a single attraction due to the large area it encompasses so we we will attempt to break-up the places we visited in this post.

Muscat, Masqat Oman: Population (May 2017): 1,560,330 (Suburb: 2.8 million)
Muscat (Arabic: مسقط, Masqaṭ ) is the capital and largest metropolitan city of Oman. It is also the seat of government and largest city in the Governorate of Muscat.
Muscat is located in northeast Oman, at 24°00′N 57°00′E. The Tropic of Cancer passes south of the area. It is bordered to its west by the plains of the Al Batinah Region and to its east by Ash Sharqiyah Region. The interior plains of the Ad Dakhiliyah Region border Muscat to the south, while the Gulf of Oman forms the northern and western periphery of the city. The water along to coast of Muscat runs deep, forming two natural harbours, in Muttrah and Muscat. The Western Al Hajar Mountains run through the northern coastline of the city.
Muscat is also considered as a Global City. According to the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI), the total population of Muscat Governorate reached 1.28 million as of September 2015. The metropolitan area spans approximately 3,500 km2 (1,400 sq mi) and includes six provinces called wilayats. Known since the early 1st century CE as an important trading port between the west and the east, Muscat was ruled by various indigenous tribes as well as foreign powers such as the Persians, the Portuguese Empire and the Ottoman Empire at various points in its history. A regional military power in the 18th century, Muscat's influence extended as far as East Africa and Zanzibar. As an important port-town in the Gulf of Oman, Muscat attracted foreign tradesmen and settlers such as the Persians and the Balochis. Since the ascension of Qaboos bin Said as Sultan of Oman in 1970, Muscat has experienced rapid infrastructural development that has led to the growth of a vibrant economy and a multi-ethnic society.
The rocky Western Al Hajar Mountains dominate the landscape of Muscat. The city lies on the Arabian Sea along the Gulf of Oman and is in the proximity of the strategic Straits of Hormuz. Low-lying white buildings typify most of Muscat's urban landscape, while the port-district of Muttrah, with its corniche and harbour, form the north-eastern periphery of the city. Muscat's economy is dominated by trade, petroleum and porting.
Muscat's economy, like that of Oman, is dominated by trade. The more traditional exports of the city included dates, mother of pearl, and fish. Many of the souks of Muttrah sell these items and traditional Omani artefacts. Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) has been central to Muscat's economy since at least 1962 and is the country's second largest employer, after the government. PDO's major shareholders include Royal Dutch/Shell,

Oman Travel Guide - Astonishing Moments of Happiness
Oman Travel Guide - Astonishing Moments of Happiness
The Sultanate of Oman is in the Middle East, on the southeastern end of the Arabian Peninsula. It borders the United Arab Emirates in the northwest, Saudi Arabia in the west, and Yemen in the southwest. Oman has two exclaves separated from it by the United Arab Emirates, the Musandam Peninsula and Madha.
Until Sultan Qaboos bin Said exiled the previous Sultan in 1970, Oman was an under-developed nation, and almost completely closed to visitors. Since that time, education, public works and tourism have taken off throughout the country.
Omanis are friendly people and are very helpful to tourists. In turn, tourists should respect the ways and traditions of the Omani people. Omanis are proud of both their country's rapid progress and their heritage as one of the great sea-faring nations. Excellent schools and hospitals, good governance, and on-going infrastructure improvement are all important characteristics of this once introverted and closed nation.
Oman has one of the hottest and driest climates in the world. However, there are substantial differences between the coastal zone, the mountain regions, the arid inland desert and the southwestern region of Dhofar.
Regions & Cities of Oman :
Northern Oman (Muscat, Bahla, Buraimi, Hajar Mountains, Madha, Matrah, Musandam Peninsula, Sohar) the capital city, fertile Al-Batinah coast, majestic Hajar Mountains and the Musandam Peninsula
Central Coastal Oman (Ibra, Masirah Island, Sur, Wahiba Sands)
awe-inspiring dunes, old forts and coastal scenery fringing the Indian Ocean
Zufar (Dhofar) (Salalah)
lush coastal lowlands and mountains bordering Yemen
Empty Quarter
huge desert wilderness including much of the largely undefined border area with Saudi Arabia.
Muscat - the historic capital and largest city
Bahla - oasis town which is home to a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Buraimi - border crossing town adjacent to Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates
Ibra - gateway to the Wahiba Sands
Matrah - adjoining the capital city and just as historic
Nizwa - contains one of the best-known forts in Oman
Salalah - the south, which is almost tropical at the time of the Kareef (southeastern monsoon)
Sohar - one of the the legendary homes of Sindbad
Sur - where dhows are still made by hand
Hajar Mountains - a majestic range, the highest in the Arabian Peninsula, which stretches into the United Arab Emirates.
Madha - tiny exclave of Oman completely surrounded by the United Arab Emirates
Masirah Island - a real desert island experience awaits on this haven for turtles and other wildlife
Musandam Peninsula - a rocky exclave on the Straits of Hormuz with some magnificent wadis
Wahiba Sands - massive rolling dunes as far as the eye can see
The food is mainly Arabic, East African, Lebanese, Turkish, and Indian. Many Omanis make a distinction between Arabic food and Omani food, with the former being the description of the standard dishes found throughout the Arabian Peninsula.
Oman has the full spectrum of accommodation - from ultra-luxurious hotels to extremely rustic huts in the desert constructed from date palm leaves. In recent years, Oman has been attempting to turn itself into something of a five-star destination for well-heeled travellers. This does not pose a problem to the budget-minded in Muscat, and even outside of the capital there is still a range of budget options. In some parts of the country, however, accommodation may be limited to higher-end hotels and resorts.

Al Hazm Castle @Rustaq Oman ????????????????????????
Al Hazm Castle is one of the most magnificent castles in Oman. It was built in 1708 towards the end of the reign of Al Yarubi tribe over Oman when they made Al Rustaq the capital at that time. Located in Al Rustaq in Al Batinah Governorate, about 160 km away from Muscat, the designer of this castle is Imam Sultan bin Saif al Yarubi. Al Hazm Castle is a fortified structure and at the same time it was a palace in which the Imam live in. It is worth noting that Al Hazm Castle is on the Unesco’s list for World Heritage sites along with Al Rustaq Fort. Though the castle was designed primarily for defence and security purposes, it features delicate artistic architectural elements. This castle was recently renovated and is equipped with digital guides and detailed description of the exhibit. The castle has a square shape with two towers on the north and south corners. The most important feature of the main building of the castle is its intricate Indian wood door. The castle also has a prison, mosque and a religious classroom.
There is also a falaj that runs underneath the castle and provides vital water to many date trees and other agriculture treasures in the area. The castle also has a tomb of the castle’s founder, Imam Sultan bin Saif bin Sultan al Yarubi, who died in 1718, and that of his son, Saif bin Sultan bin Saif Al Yarubi, who died in 1742. The castle showcases some unique engravings and architectural designs that are not seen in other castles. Al Hazm Castle stands as a solid reminder of Oman’s proud history and enduring heritage.
