FOOD REVIEW: Eating Crazy Spicy Quail (นกกระทาผัดเผ็ด) - Thailand Village Food in Nakhon Sawan!
►Subscribe to my videos:
►Camera gear I use:
Nakhon Sawan (นครสวรรค์) is a city and province in Central Thailand. Although my wife is originally from Krabi in the South of Thailand (where her father is from), her mother is originally from Nakhon Sawan. So we decided to take a quick family trip to Nakhon Sawan (นครสวรรค์) to visit her grandmother and to eat some crazy spicy Thai food!
The last time I went to visit, my wife’s uncle had caught some field rats — these are not city rats, but free range field rats, which are very common to eat. He made an amazing Thai food dish of minced rat with chili paste and lots of extra chilies and garlic. On this visit to Nakhon Sawan (นครสวรรค์) I asked if we could eat rat again, but unfortunately they couldn't get any from the field this time… so we settled for some quail, cooked rat style!
The recipe for this spicy Thai food dish included these ingredients:
Quail (นกกระทา nok krata)
Curry paste (เครื่องแกงเผ็ด kreung gaeng ped)
Coriander seeds (เม็ดผักชี med pakshe)
Fish sauce - น้ำปลา (nam pla)
Holy basil (กระเพรา kraprao)
Chilies - (พริก prik)
Garlic - (กระเทียม gratiem)
This dish in Thai is called nok krata pad ped (นกกระทาผัดเผ็ด), which is quail stir fried with lots of chili.
I love the countryside of Thailand, especially the Thai food culture and eating interesting and bizarre and crazy spicy foods is also awesome.
Thank you for watching this Thai countryside food video about spicy quail!

The Old Customs House In Bangkok
This is Bangkok's original custom's house - which is lying abandoned on the side of the city's river. The stunning neo-classical property was built in 1888 and levied taxes on traders moving in and out of the kingdom along the Chao Phraya river. Designed by Austrian-Italian architect Joachim Grassi, it was inspired by the beautiful homes in the Italian countryside. However, customs operations have long been modernised and today the building stands empty and crumbling. Local officials have made some efforts to renovate the building and preserve it's heritage, while there has also been big money offers from developers who would like to transform it into a hotel or knock it down to build a shopping mall or apartment block. Thailand's Treasury Department confirmed in 2017 that the project to turn the old Custom's House into an Aman Resorts hotel would go ahead under Natural Park's successor, the U City company.

Samut Prakan Province, Bhumibol Bridge, formerly the Industrial Ring Road Bridge, Thailand. ( 2 )
Samut Prakan is one of the central provinces of Thailand, established by the Act Establishing Changwat Samut Prakan, Changwat Nonthaburi, Changwat Samut Sakhon and Changwat Nakhon Nayok, Buddhist Era 2489 ( 1946 ), which came into force as from 9 March 1946. It is part of the Bangkok Metropolitan Region. Neighbouring provinces are Bangkok, to the north and west, and Chachoengsao to the east. Suvarnabhumi Airport (or also called New Bangkok International Airport) is located in the Bang Phli district of Samut Prakan province.
The province was created during the Ayutthaya period, with its administrative centre located at Phra Pradaeng. It was the sea port of Siam, and was secured with forts, town moats and town-walls. King Rama II started the building of the new centre at Samut Prakan in 1819, after his predecessor King Taksin had disbanded the town fortification. Altogether six forts were built on both sides of the Chao Phraya river, and on an island in the river the pagoda Phra Samut Chedi was erected. These were involved in the Paknam incident of 13 July 1893, which ended the Franco-Siamese War with the French naval blockade of Bangkok. Of the original six forts only two exist today, Phi Sua Samut and Phra Chulachomklao.
In Thai the word Samut is from Sanskrit, samudra, meaning ocean or sea, and the word Prakan is from Sanskrit, prākāra, meaning fortress, walls or stronghold.
The provincial seal shows the temple Phra Samut Chedi, the most important site of Buddhist worship in the province. Provincial tree is Thespesia populnea. The provincial slogan is Marine Battle Fortresses, Chedi in the Water, Crocodile Farm, Exquisite Ancient City, Phra Pradaeng Songkran Festival, Tasty Dried Snakeskin Gourami, Rap Bua Festival, Industrial Estate.
Samut Prakan is located at the mouth of the Chao Phraya river to the Gulf of Thailand. Thus the province is also sometimes called Pak Nam the Thai word for the mouth of a river. The part of the province located on the western side of the river consist mostly of rice and prawn fields as well as mangrove forests, while the east part is the urban centre - including industrial factories. It is part of the Bangkok metropolis, the urbanization on both sides of the provincial boundary is identical. The province has a coastline of about 47.2 kilometres. Bang Pu Nature Reserve, about 12 km east of the town centre, has a large bird population. Especially during the winter the Sakdi pier at Bang Pu is very popular for Thai people feeding the wintering seagulls. The park is run jointly by the Royal Thai Army and the Thai WWF, and was officially established at the 72nd birthday of Queen Sirikit in 2004.
The HTMS Maeklong, a former Royal Thai Navy ship is moored in concrete at Chulachomklao Fort at the mouth of the Chao Phraya in Amphoe Phra Samut Chedi. Two major tourist attractions of the province are located in Amphoe Mueang Samut Prakan, the capital district: Mueang Boran or Ancient City, a park that features downscaled replicas of all major historical buildings of Thailand; and the Crocodile Farm. Besides being the home of Suvarnabhumi Airport, Amphoe Bang Phli is famous for the annual Lotus Flower ( Rap Bua ) festival, which usually takes place on the full moon in October
The province is sub divided into 6 districts (Amphoe). The districts are further sub divided into 50 sub districts
( Tambon ) and 396 villages ( Muban ). There are one city (thesaban nakhon), three towns ( thesaban mueang ) and 13 sub district municipalities ( thesaban tambon ). For the national elections the province is divided into 3 voting districts, one eligible for three assemblyman and the other two each for two assembly men.

Nakhon Ratchasima Province, Wat Pa Lak Roi Temple, Non Thai District, Thailand. ( 43 )
My visit to Korat in June , 2014, brought back many memory’s for me. It was some 6 years before I visited this province before. One stop I made was at Wat Pa Lak Roi in Nonthai, about 25 kilometres outside Korat. It is not an easy temple to find, lucky I had a friend who drove me there. On arriving at this temple you may imagine you are entering a fun park with all the statues / models about the place. It may seem very strange to see because they are very graphic and some may say not suitable for children. You wonder why a temple would depict scenes like this until you evaluate the depiction.
This is my view only as I saw it. Picture the Temple raised above all these grounds, this depicts heaven and all below depicted hell and all the bad things associated with hell. You can see the same pictures in books whenever hell is shown, pain , suffering, torture. Its always the same. The statues here are graphic showing genitalia and scenes of a disturbing nature. But remember, Buddhist monks placed these here to show the bad and good of society. They are shown in a funny way by extending the models arms and legs to be taken as a symbolic way and not meant to hurt or harm the viewer. I found them amusing, even when you found some with coin slots you could feed 5 or 10 Baht into to here the moans / groans / wailing / of the tortured souls.
You could spend all day at this temple it is a very large site covering 77,000 sq. metres.. It is said it depicts the Laotian invasion of 1826 when the Korat women’s defence fought under Thao Suranaree, her statue can be seen in the centre of Korat. There are various stalls around this temple you can buy food and drink at. Along with the usual items associated with Thailand. Not many people were there on the day I visited so it was a welcome change to wander about without the usual crowds standing in front of items you want to photograph. There are plenty of parking spaces available due to the size of the grounds.
One thing I did find amusing and refreshing, was how friendly the monks were at this temple. Inviting people to check all parts of the temple and laughing and joking with me when I entered a solemn part of the temple. It made the day more interesting.
The province is located on the western end of the Korat Plateau, separated from the Chao Phraya river valley by the Phetchabun and Dong Phaya Yen mountain ranges. Two national parks are in the province - the Khao Yai in the west and the Thap Lan in the south. Both parks are in the forested mountains of the Sankamphaeng Range, the southern prolongation of the Dong Phaya Yen mountains. Nakhon Ratchasima, or Korat, is a large province on the north eastern plateau and acts as a gateway to other provinces in the Northeast. It is 259 kilometres ( 161 miles ) from Bangkok and has an area of around 20,494 square kilometres (7,913 sq mi), making it the biggest Thai province. The province is rich in Khmer culture and has a long history.
The area around Khorat was already an important centre in the times of the Khmer empire in the 11th century, as can be seen by the temple ruins in the Phimai historical park. Still, Nakhon Ratchasima Province is one province where there is a sizable Northern Khmer population. A new walled city with a surrounding moat, designated as Nakhon Ratchasima, was built in the seventeenth century by order of the King Narai, as the easternmost command post, guarding the Kingdom's border and supervising its Lao and Cambodian vassals. It continued this duty during the Bangkok Period, although it was seized by deceit during Chao Anuwong of Vientiane's 1826 revolt against the King Rama III of Siam.
Nakhon Ratchasima has long been the most important political and economic centre in the northeastern region. In the late nineteenth century, the railroad reached Khorat became the junction of two main rail lines in the Northeastern, Issan, region. In 1933 it was the stronghold of the royalist troops in the Boworadej Revolt, as they fought the new democratic government in Bangkok. In the 1950's, the Korat Royal Thai Air Force Base was built in Nakhon Ratchasima; from 1961 until 26 February 1976, this facility was also used as a base by the United States Air Force.
Nakhon Ratchasima Province, Korat, Issan, Wat Sala Loi Temple, Thailand. ( 34 )
Wat Sala Loi Temple situated in the North East part of the old town. It was built by Thao Suranari and her husband in 1827. It received the Siam Architects society award for the best Avant Garde religious building in 1973 ( Avant Garde meaning favouring or introducing experimental or unusual ideas, it originates from the french language ). The highlight of this temple is the meeting hall which is built in the style of a Thai boat riding the waves.
The hall is decorated with local Dan Kwian clay tiles and depicts the life of Buddha along the walls. The huge door is made from metal. Inside the hall is a large Buddha statue. In front of the door is a sculpture of Thao Suranari sitting praying in the middle of a pond, besides the building is a small pagoda that contains the ashes of her. The temple can be found about 500 metres from the Rop Mueang road.
So much was going on the day I attended here. Stalls were selling all kinds of things for anyone that wanted to offer prayers. Some stalls were selling food. The car park here was so full it was not easy finding a parking space. One thing that surprised me was, as I was taking videos and photos of all around the grounds a policeman stood to attention and saluted me and smiled. I thought it was a really nice gesture in this friendly city.
In the grounds is a large pond with a bridge over it many people used this vantage point to get the really nice pictures of this beautiful Temple. Near to this pond a very large gong prompted people to ring it when passing. It surely is an unusual and beautifully designed Temple, not big by many temples but non the less worth a visit.

King Rama III conferred the title of Thao Suranaree on Khun Ying Mo, as well as additional ones honouring her bravery.

Taxis are plentiful, clean, safe, and inexpensive in Khorat. They can be found at taxi stands in the city areas or hailed on the streets. There are also certain taxis that can be requested by phone, however, the fare is slightly higher than regular taxis. An increasing number of taxi drivers nowadays speak some English which may prove extremely useful for first-time visitors. The fare system is based on both distance and time.
