Daiosaki Lighthouse - MieXplorer
Daiozaki lighthouse
Geoff here with another MieXplorer video.
Today we are in Mie’s Shima city, checking out the Daiosaki Lighthouse.
Now there was a saying here “Ship owners are not to find their navigators guilty for shipwrecking in the Daio Sea.”
This is because the surrounding waters are very dangerous, and the people here for longest time had been requesting a lighthouse, but were never approved.
But in 1917 the pride of Japan’s navy, the Otowa ran aground here, and the government finally recognize the need for a lighthouse.
Unfortunately, due to the Great Kanto earthquake in 1923 and the subsequent recovery, it wasn’t until 1927 that it was finished.
But for 88 years the lighthouse has survived crashing waves, typhoons, and even machine gun fire during World War 2.
Most lighthouses from this time period were squared-shaped but the Daiosaki lighthouse is cylindrical with a fan shaped two story annex which is considered a unique and innovative design.
Being a nicely designed building, it has become very popular among painters.
In fact the entire town is know as a “Painter’s town”
The France like narrow winding roads attract many painters hoping to capture the town’s charm.
As you can imagine, the main industry of Diaosaki is fishing.
You can often see fisherman and women divers working year round pulling up a delicious seafood catch.
And The fish sold here is as fresh as you can get because it is directly from the source.
Wandering through the streets, you will come across several small shops selling crafts and jewellery made from oysters and pearls.
And If you want to try amazingly fresh sushi at a great price, make sure to stop by the local sushi restaurant.
As with all places in Japan, there is interesting folklore associated with Daiosaki.
If you visit the Nakiri shrine, you can read about a giant cyclops being scared away by a large sandal, created by the townsfolk.
Or see kujira ishi, or whale stones, which were found in several whale bellies and brought to the shrine.
It is amazing how much this small town has to offer.
