Tadiandamol Trek | Nalknad Palace | Chelavara falls | Solo ride and Hike | highest peak in coorg
Tadiandamol or Thadiyandamol (Kannada: Tadiyandamolu, Kodava : Tadiyandamol, ) is the highest mountain of Kodagu district, Karnataka, India. It is the third highest peak in Karnataka(after Mullayyanagiri & Kudremukha). It is located Western Ghats range, and reaches an elevation of 1,748 m. The mountain has patches of shola forests in the valleys.
The Nalaknad (also known as Nalnad - meaning 4 villages) palace at the foothills is an important historical landmark. This was one of the landmarks mapped during the Great Trigonometric Survey.
It is a place of interest for trekkers and naturalists. The climb to the top and back can be completed as a day hike; camping is banned since December 2016.
The name Tadiandamol literally means largest base (thadi = broad, large, huge; anda = belonging to (possessive) in Kodava; mol = hill, base, peak). It loosely means Tallest Mount and the name also could translate as Broad Hill.
I conquered it Solo.
I reached the peak at 12:30 in the noon and there was absolutely no one around. I was there alone at the top for more than an hour and It was all worth it :) Visited Nalknad Palace and Chelavara falls while coming back home.
At a distance of 43 km from Madikeri, 23 km from Virajpet & 13 km from Kakkabe, Chelavara Falls is a beautiful waterfall situated near Cheyyandane village on Virajpet - Talacauvery road in Coorg. It is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Karnataka and also one of the best places to visit in Coorg.
Chelvara Falls is a natural waterfall formed by small stream, a tributary of Kaveri River. It drops from a height of about 150 feet into a big pool. The pool has a depth of more than 50 feet. The waterfall is locally known as Embepare, which means tortoise in local Kodava language. The rock over which the water cascades is shaped like a tortoise and hence the name Embepare.
The water fall is really a wonderful site as the water gushes from the rocks amidst the green coffee plantations. The enchanting natural beauty and the tranquility of the place attract tourists and nature lovers. This waterfall is seasonal and it offer wonderful views in rainy season. Entering the water is very dangerous and has proven to be fatal for many over the past few years. The tourists are advised not to get into the water.
The waterfall is close to the motor able road (autos can be hired at Cheyyandane) and needs 10 minutes' walk to reach the falls. Chomakund Hill is another renowned tourist spot which is about 2 km away from the falls. Tourists visiting Chelavara Falls will also visit Chomakund hill. Chomakund is an awesome place surrounding with lush green shrubs and trees and is almost covered in fog most of the time.
Monsoon is the best season to visit the falls.

Also called as Naalnaad Aremane, the Nalaknad Palace was built by Kodava king Dodda Veerarajendra in 1792 CE after escaping from the attack of Tippu Sultan during his invasion of Coorg. Padi Igguthappa temple, the holiest Kodava shrine, and Nalkand palace are the main attractions in Kakkabe, 38 kms from Madikeri, the headquarters of Coorg.
Padi Igguthappa Temple is dedicated to Igguthappa, another name for Lord Subramanya. Igguthappa is also the Rain God and the main deity of Kodavas.
Deep in the dense forest and at the highest peak of Coorg, lies the Nalknad palace with Its beautiful architecture resembling typical Kodava houses. The front garden with a marriage pavilion, tiled roof and wooden pillars that line the corridors, palatial Durbar Hall with artistic paintings and carved wooden roof arrest your attention. The palace was built in A.D. 1792, by Dodda Virarajendra, to celebrate his victory against Tippu Sultan. The palace was later used as his last refuge, by Chikka Virarajendra, to hide from the British in A.D. 1834.
The palace has three dark rooms in the basement floor, probably used for hiding from enemies in those times. These dark rooms do not allow an inch of light to creep in and are pitch dark even during the day time.
