Vietnam , officially the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam , is the easternmost country on the Indochina Peninsula. With an estimated 94.6 million inhabitants as of 2016, it is the world's 15th-most-populous country, and the ninth-most-populous Asian country. Vietnam is bordered by China to the north, Laos to the northwest, Cambodia to the southwest, Thailand across the Gulf of Thailand to the southwest, and the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia across the South China Sea to the east and southeast. Its capital city has been Hanoi since the reunification of North and South Vietnam in 1976, with Ho Chi Minh City as the most populous city. The northern part of Vietnam was part of Imperial China for over a millennium, from 111 BC to AD 939. An independent Vietnamese state was formed in 939, following a Vietnamese victory in the battle of Bạch Đằng River. Successive Vietnamese imperial dynasties flourished as the nation expanded geographically and politically into Southeast Asia, until the Indochina Peninsula was colonised by the French in the mid-19th century. Following a Japanese occupation in the 1940s, the Vietnamese fought French rule in the First Indochina War. On 2 September 1945, President Hồ Chí Minh declared Vietnam's independence from France under the new name of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. In 1954, the Vietnamese declared victory in the battle of Điện Biên Phủ which took place between March and May 1954 and culminated in a major French defeat. Thereafter, Vietnam was divided politically into two rival states, North Vietnam and South Vietnam . Conflict between the two sides intensified in what is known as the Vietnam War with heavy intervention by the United States on the side of South Vietnam from 1965 to 1973. The war ended with a North Vietnamese victory in 1975. Vietnam was then unified under a communist government but remained impoverished and politically isolated. In 1986, the Communist Party of Vietnam initiated a series of economic and political reforms that began Vietnam's path toward integration into the world economy. By 2010, it had established diplomatic relations with 178 countries. Since 2000, Vietnam's economic growth rate has been among the highest in the world, and in 2011, it had the highest Global Growth Generators Index among 11 major economies. Its successful economic reforms resulted in its joining the World Trade Organisation in 2007. Vietnam is a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations , Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation and the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie.

Nam Du Island, an extremely slow paced island which yet is undiscovered by tourist. It is approximately 1.5 hours from the only ferry port named Rach Gia.

To complete a full circle around the island without stopping by only takes 15 minutes but do stick around to catch the sun set or have a sun tan at Bai Chey Men Beach.

Another activity you could do is to buy tickets to go snorkelling 300k VND in the morning and 150K VND in the afternoon. There are only 2 trips a day.

Located 52 miles West Coast of Rach Gia city in Kien Giang province, Nam Du island has become an attractive destination for tourists. Discovery Vietnam today will take you on a tour of the island, known as Vietnam’s second Ha Long bay or South's Halong Bay

The immense blue sea and sky, imposing mountains erupting amidst the ocean, endless evergreen primeval forests, long stunning beaches and splendid rock cliffs of Nam Du Archipelago in Kien Giang Province have seen it compared to the ‘new wonder of the world’ that is Halong Bay in Quang Ninh Province.
It takes five hours to reach the Nam Du Islands, 52 miles off the coast of Rach Gia City. The archipelago has 21 islands, which can only be reached by boat and covers only 40 square kilometers.
The archipelago stretches over two communes of An Son and Nam Du with a population of 10,000 people working in fishing and sea-related services. Formed from a volcano, it has numerous six-meter creeks which are advantageous for transportation. As it is endowed with high mountains, Nam Du also is suggested as a great spot for offshore fishermen to flee rough storms.
Cu Tron Island is the first stop on the boat from Rach Gia and the largest island. There tourists can visit many sites such as Ngu Wharf, Ngu Well, Chet, Gieng and Co beaches. From the dock, a three kilometer paved road leads up into the hills, ending at a 300-meter peak that provides a panoramic view of the archipelago. There are fishing villages on the east and west sides of the island and at night a lighthouse illuminates the sea.
A must-see location is Dau Islet which is 95 percent forest and also boasts shady, picturesque coconut gardens. Tourists should also take a boat trip around the whole archipelago, cruising along Nom Ngoai, Dam, Hang, Moc, and Tre islands’ beautiful rocky beaches.
Visitors can go to Ngang Islet to rent rooms for an overnight stay. There are no real hotels on the islands, just some local homes that residents have opened up as guesthouses.
There are two boat trips daily to Ngang, one at 7 a.m. and the other at 3 p.m. On the way to Nam Du, try to make a stop at Mau Islet, which is 20 minutes from Rach Gia by boat. The 200-hectare islet has a fishing village, two sandy beaches and three rock beaches.
The boat to Nam Du leaves from the quay at Nguyen Cong Tru Street, Rach Gia, at 7h20 a.m. daily.

The little known Nam Du archipelago (pronounced “nam yu”) is 21 islands and islets in the Gulf of Thailand off the southwest coast of Vietnam.

The main cluster of 19 islands lies 52 nautical miles from Rach Gia, the capital of the Mekong Delta province Kien Giang. A few of the islands, like main island Nam Du, are large enough to be inhabited, with colourful fishing boats and gritty villages clustered along its crust, while tiny islets like hon Do Nai are no more than a bump of rock drowning in ocean.

As if this tale could not get more fantastical, the three islands of Hon Tre, Hon Son and Nam Du are connected to the mainland by a daily fast ferry – yet few foreigners venture there.

Nam Du (also called Hon Lon – “big island”) is the furthest and final ferry stop, a one-way journey from Rach Gia taking two and a half hours.

The primary industry is fishing and up until recently, the only place for visitors to stay was in a room in a local’s home. The island is still relatively poor and developing, and tourism here is very much in its infancy, but recently a few purpose-built guesthouses have appeared, including one right on the water.

How to get to to Nam Du island

Basically, way to get Nam Du is similar to Phu Quoc. You have to get to Rach Gia from Ho Chi Minh by bus (take about 6 hours) then take the boat.

About Rach Gia City - Kien Giang

Rạch Giá is a provincial city and the capital city of Kien Giang province, Vietnam. It is located on the eastern coast of the Gulf of Thailand, 250 kilometres (160 mi) south-west of Ho Chi Minh City. East of city, it borders Tân Hiệp and Châu Thành town, the Gulf of Thailand is to the west and surrounds some parts of the city, south of the city is Châu Thành and An Biên town, northward it borders Hòn Đất and Tân Hiệp.

Rạch Giá was upgraded from a town to a city by Government Decree No. 97/2005/NĐ-CP on July 26, 2005.The city has 12 administrative units:

Rạch Giá is the first city where the Vietnamese government applied lan bien project to build out to the ocean to expand territory. Lan bien project expand the city to become one of the biggest new cities in the south-west of Vietnam. This project adds 2 more new wards in Rạch Giá. Beside that, several future construction projects such as industrial center Rach Vuot and urban city Vinh Hiep which will be started after finishing Lac Hong bridge project will expand Rạch Giá to the east.

Rạch Giá has 2 main stations: Rach Soi station (main routes to neighbor towns or provinces on highway 61 and 63) and Rach Gia station (main routes to Ho Chi Minh City and Hà Tiên). Those are main stations to transport passengers to other towns in provinces or other provinces in nation.[citation needed]

Bus transportation system is developed pretty early, passengers can use bus from Rạch Giá to 4 other towns: Châu Thành (route Rạch Giá – Tac Cau), Giồng Riềng (route Rạch Giá – Giồng Riềng), Tân Hiệp (route Rạch Giá – Kinh B), Hòn Đất (route Rạch Giá – Tam Ngan).

Currently, Rach Gia Airport is the biggest airport in Rạch Giá. Rạch Giá airport has flight routes to Phú Quốc and Ho Chi Minh City with Vietnam Airlines.

Rạch Giá has 2 big ship stations: Rạch Giá ship station or Phú Quốc ship station (routes to Phú Quốc island and other big islands such as Phú Quốc, Hon Tre, Hon Son, Tho Chu…) and Rach Meo station (route to rural towns of Cà Mau Peninsula). High speed ship is economic choice for passengers to Phú Quốc island or Kiên Hải islands.

There are two main seasons in Nam Du: dry season (from November to May) and rainy season (from May to October). The rainy season is characterized by rain, and during the peak of this season from July to September, it may have a lot more rain and rough seas. Hence, the best time to visit Nam Du Island is from December to April when the sea is peaceful and turquoise, the temperature is comfortable and the weather is consistent and sunny.
